An in depth insight into the Hippie SFO culture

Loved this tour. Stan was knowledgeable and entertaining in this slow moving walking tour throughout the Haight neighbourhood. Good for any age, not strenuous at all.

Our guide Stan has made it his mission to share his knowledge of living in the area for many years. Though we we grew up far from here, we were generally aware of the area through the music and musicians who were living here at the time. It was fun seeing homes where The Greatful Dead and Janis Joplin lived.... More

When my husband and I travel, we like to look for walking tours of whatever area we're in to give us some background. This tour was fantastic at giving us an 'insider's glimpse' into the history of San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood. The tour leader is 'Stan', who has lived in the area since 1972 (so he knows where most of... More

Stan our tour leader gave us a great day. He is so knowledgeable and tells stories so you feel you were there. He has a great sense of humor as well. You can't go wrong with this tour so book it. Thanks Stan.

This tour was amazing! Stan knew the neighborhood! You could tell he's been living there for 30+ years. He's a fixture on Haight-Ashbury and is known by many! He was very informative and gave us the run down on the history of the area and took us around to see many interesting places and homes that make this area so... More

Stan did a wonderful tour on an era long gone by. Since he is a local historian, I think he knows more about the history and the area than most other tour companies. He also has a great gift of story telling and sense of humor. That is the reason I went with Haight Ashbury Flower Power Walking Tour over... More

Stan, our tour guide was fantastic !! We saw and learned so much about the Golden Gate Park, Flower Power Time and the 'Flower Power Time' what we not expected about the Grateful Dead and many persons which influenced my wife's life, she was a Punk in Amsterdam, and my life, I never knew that the Grateful Death did for... If you are interested in the culture of 60s, I would like to recommend this walking tour. It surely makes your stay in S.F. somewhat different. This tour takes you to inside of one of the historic building. After the tour, I entered what now becomes "Magnolia Gastropub and Brewery" and had some very delicious hamburger and craft beer.

My husband and I just finished the Flower Power walking tour. It was fantastic. Stan was our tour guide and he was full of insight and interesting information about the neighborhood. It wasn't totally about the hippies and the Summer of Love but included lots of other historical facts about the neighborhood including architecture. I would take the tour again... More

I did a walking tour with Stan. He is a long term resident and has a lot of insight and information about the history of Haight. Walking is a nice, slow pace, with many rest stops and very few hills. Easiest walk to be had in the city!

Staying in Haight-Ashbury

Neighborhood Profile
The area surrounding the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, “The Haight” still exudes vibes of the 1960s counterculture as a haven for vintage clothes, music, pop posters and body piercing shops. While the Summer of Love ended decades ago, Haight-Ashbury has turned into a melting pot of hippies, hipsters, and professionals. Walking through its streets can still feel like stepping back in time. A must-see neighborhood for most music fans, it’s easy to see why these streets attracted the likes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. You’ll likely be content in The Haight day or night, just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.
