Swanky and stylish, Nob Hill sits in the heart of the city and is home to amazing architecture and views. The hike to the top can be a challenging workout for those who forego a cable car ride, but they will be rewarded with some of the city’s most beautiful architecture adorning its peak. Originally populated with mansions after the Gold Rush, most if not all were devastated in the 1906 earthquake and fire that followed. Luckily all is not lost; storied hotels and Grace Cathedral surround Huntington Park. Having a drink or dinner while taking in the sunset and views at the "top of the Mark" is tough to beat.

LOVE LOVE LOVE This place! The atmosphere is everything and the cocktails are amazing. I loved that they had live music while we were dining. I just wasn't sure why those sitting at tables were charged a "live music" fee while those standing in the bar didn't get charged.

Tonga Room can get busy so get there early or be prepared to wait for a table. It is worth the wait. Our service was fantastic and the food was really good.

This is a great spot for a date to show your fun side or just a great night out with out of towners or your friends.

Unique experience…like nothing I can think of. Surreal. The band plays on a boat in the middle of a lagoon and it rains ! Add to that the fact that is over 50 years old and in the iconic Fairmont Hotel. A bucket list experience.

Ever since I saw Anthony Bourdain visiting this iconic location on one of his episodes I wanted to visit. After several attempts--we were too early, too late, closed for the day, etc. over a period of years, it was finally open when we were there. There was no cover charge, Covid checking was in place, there was live music from the "floating island" in the pool/lagoon. There was definitely a 1920's kind of Tiki Bar vibe and the decoration matched. Considering this was originally the indoor pool for the Fairmont Hotel converting to the Tonga Room was pretty cool. It was fun, the band was good, the drinks expensive and of OK quality BUT, it was the Tonga Room . The noise level is high but we still got to visit with a young Canadian couple who were fun to talk with until they closed the bar at 10:00--seemed a little early for a Thursday night.
So, we got our visit to the Tonga Room--a bucket list item for us.

Once Was More Than Enough For Us

During our July stay at the Fairmont San Francisco, atop Nob Hill, we finally were free on an evening, that the Tonga Room was open. On three previous stays, we had missed doing it, so had our opportunity. This was to be our first visit - and now, our last. Once was more than enough for us.

The Tonga Room is iconic, and as one of our first dinner dates, decades ago, was at a lovely “tiki restaurant” at Pontchartrain Beach, in New Orleans, visiting the Tonga Room was high on our list.

We were not dining there, but off-property, but wanted to see, and experience the Tonga Room for wine, before departing for dinner. We had two hours, so made our way to the Tonga Room. We explained to the hostess that we only were having wine, and were shown to a little table, at the bar end of the indoor lagoon, where a barge of musicians plies the waterway, later in the evening.

Now, the Tonga Room is dark - very dark. Considering how my jacket stuck to our table, and my shoes to the floor, that is likely a good thing. Yes, it has a strong “tiki” aspect in décor, and probably more so, when the show begins. We were not going to be there long enough for that, so I was looking for a wine list. There was a server, standing near our table, away from the bar, and I kept trying to signal him, but he kept looking beyond me. After a bit, my wife got his attention, and asked for a wine list. He was highly put out, and expressed this, but did get the list, which is short, and similar to the other bar, down off the lobby. I made our decisions, and we tried to get the server’s attention, once more, with zero luck.

I finally went to the bar, to order our wines, and was informed that we had been seated at one of the tables, with no service, so would have get everything ourselves. Tables with no service? Seemed odd to me, and especially as the hostess knew that we wanted wines, and chose that table for us. The bartender went to chastize the hostess for even seating us, as we were not dining in the Tonga Room that night.

That was the final straw, and we departed, with no wine, and a wasted 30 minutes, because no one had explained the rules to us. As we still had time, we walked out of the Fairmont, crossed California St, and were seated at a lovely table, with a wine list, high atop another hotel - with great views of the city, and neither the floor, nor the table were sticky!

Yes, once was more than enough for us, and I would never return, even when staying at the lovely Fairmont.

Had an incredible night here. Used cable car to arrive in style and at beginning of happy hour.
Started in the bar area and then moved into a table around the lagoon (pool)... the atmosphere is fantastic with mood lighting, sounds (thunder and then actual rainfall into the lagoon), Pacifica decor etc.

The cocktails are excellent and when the band came out to play we were in a dancing mood! Fab time.

Highly recommend when you go to the bathroom (go even if you are a camel in disguise!) and have a look at the photos in the corridor on the way there... and go up the beautiful stairwell to look at the opulent decor of the stunning hotel above.

Highlight of the week while in San Francisco for s week was our night with 4 of us and then meeting another couple and chatting for hours with them!

We got a table since we were ordering food (a terrific pu pu platter) or you can stand if you are just drinking. The live music (from a boat on the center pool) was perfect as were the drinks. Something you can only find in SF!

My wife thought this would be a great place to end our west coast trip... Wrong!

Food was awful and so over priced!

If you are looking for gimmicky nights it might be worth a try. Otherwise, stay away!

My friend showed me this place which I really enjoyed!
I have never seen a restaurant/bar with an inside pool and inside-thunderstorm and rain, this was definitely an amazing experience and so much fun. The live music was really good as well and the food and drinks were fantastic. The staff was exceptionally friendly and very good. I recommend to stop and check this place out if you would like to have a different restaurant experience!

I celebrated my 50th birthday here on 24 October with 3 friends and the staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful.
They don't do table reservations so we had to wait but with drinks at the bar with a view over the swimming pool and sounds of rain, thunder and lightning it was a fascinating wait. Once we had our table the party had started and I had a great birthday !
