Standing high atop a hill in San Francisco The Sutro Tower thrust up into the sky. With it’s antenna buzzing, it sends out signals of communications. Most of the cities radio and television stations are spread from this imposing 970-foot tower. Looking like a modern descendant of classic Noir cinema, it broadcasts its messages as it straddles the Earth.
It is constantly looming on the skyline. It can be seen all over the Bay area. Piercing through the fog. Floating like an alien spacecraft.
It is omnipotent. It is unavoidable. It is always there. And it waits for no man. No woman. No life at all. Not even for time. Or for space. It is truly eternal. Standing like an Olympian god– on top of Mt. Sutro.
It is closed to the public.

Sutro Tower standing at 977 feet is near Clarendon Heights area in San Francisco. It rises from a hill between Twin Peaks and Mount Sutro. It is a prominent part of the city skyline. It is also a landmark.
Also visitors and local benefit greatly from Sutro tower if one (like me) watches TV.
I took this picture of Sutro Tower when I visited Fort Funston area of San Francisco.

The best you can do with this tower is drive or walk by it as it is a radio/communications tower and is not open to the public. It is pretty impressive standing below it though especially after climbing the mountain.

All these reviews of it “just being a tower” is very sad to hear. Do you just look at a building, person, mountain, body of water, or flower and think “ehh it’s just ____.”
Wherever you start this trek, whether is be from the Castro, driving to the top and parking, or making it an all day adventure from the ferry building to the very top top of twin peaks- this tower has it all. History, views, and memories to last you a lifetime.
So what I’m saying, is if you appreciate things for what they are, vs what content you can curate for whatever social media platform (which you definitely can coming here) then you will love your trip up to sutro tower.
Ps- be sure to make another trip down to sutro baths!

As a telecommunications engineer who works on and climbs radio masts, this was an ideal location to see a very impressive radio mast along with some great views over San Francisco!!! Walked around it along with the masts at nearby Twin Peaks.

The best part of seeing the Tower is seeing the view from where it stands. The tower is just a tower. If you go to Twin Peaks, it is interesting to walk over and see it. But really, your eyes will be drawn to the view below you. The Tower is visible all over the city.

We were in the Castro neighborhood and noticed a distinct structure on tshirts and works of art and finally asked a shop keeper what that was. He took us outside and pointed to this tower located a distance away high up on a hill. He didn't know what the purpose of the tower was, just something to look at.
