Don't let the name fool you: the views from Buena Vista Park are not the best in the city: too many trees and plants stand in your way to make nice pictures. But it's a nice stroll through the park, though. Very quiet, fresh air, nice trees. But no views.

We went to Buena Vista Park. It is a nice green park with lots of trees. It is in the Haight-Ashbury and Buena Heights districts.
It is the oldest park in San Francisco and has been a park since 1867. It was first named Hill Park. It was renamed to its current name in 1894.

Found a homeless guy to give us a tour of the area and he took us up the hill of Buena Vista park. He took us to a clearing on the hill that over looked the entire city, past the bridge. He gave us a real history of what was going on in the city and things tour guides dont tell you. We also met a few of his homeless buds that were on acid....and maybe pcp. Watched one of them lose his face, and the other hid in a bush and randomly put in his 2 cents. Great experience and funny story for us. May not be safe for others to walk through and have a seat, as there may be people tripping their faces off in bushes. The view was fantastic though...

On May 10, while climbing up the steps on Haight Street, I had my purse snatched!!! Thanks to the wonderful San Francisco Police Department the "snatcher" was caught. Be sure to keep a careful watch out if you go here!!

Not sure why BV Park gets as high ratings as it does. The views from the top are negligible. The views from a bit below the summit on the north (Haight St side) are better but still not as good as other locales. Maybe it’s the large grassy area adjacent to Haight St? I dunno but if this park hadn’t been on my hiking route down to Haight St I would have been disappointed. I guess I’m glad I’ve been there and delete from my list of places to visit. Go elsewhere for views of SF.

This journey is not for the unfit because it’s a long way to the top, and fairly steep inclines. That said, if you are able to reach the pinnacle the views over San Francisco on a clear day are amazing and worth the effort. If this park sounds too hard, I’d suggest Alamo Square instead, and this one overlooks the Painted Ladies so you see those and still get good views.

For peaceful walks among the woods and a bonus view at the top where you can get amazing sights of golden gate bridge. It is a lovely park everyone must visit!

I've lived across the street from this park for nearly 20 years. On the good side, it is one of the oldest parks in the City (established in 1867) and historic. It is about half way between the Presidio and the Mission. When men rode from the fort to the mission they would stop here to take in the amazing view from the top. The park has had its ups and downs. During wartime non-native species were planted because they grew faster. Now, they have been largely replaced. The park has been a notorious gay cruising ground and also a refuge of hippies and drug addicts. Now you can meet all sorts in the park. As in any urban area, i would watch myself in the park. I believe there is now a curfew; but in any case, i would not go there after dark. The urban views are spectacular but the aging woods gives it a rather sinister feeling. For the safest and quickest jaunt to the top, enter from the North side on the paved path (no care allowed). There are tennis courts and a children's playground (which is on the West side). There is a dog area but it is not fenced. People do often let dogs off leash. A walk around the edge of the park can be interesting as there are a number of historic houses on Buena Vista West and East. Movies are often filmed in the area (most recently Antman). The houses range from beautiful Victorian and Edwardian houses to modern homes that have been on the cover of Dwell. Some have been renovated in recent years as the area has seen a revival. If you visit the Haight, this can be a pleasant break from your urban experience.

We were out pounding the pavement and found ourselves near Buena Vista Park, I knew of the park and had thought maybe we might visit but then remembered that our host did not recommend it. As I was so excited to seeing my first glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge we decided to climb to the top of the park and maybe get the glimpse that I was looking for.
From the street level the entry to the park is rather ordinary looking, hardly inviting and the park is quite unkept. In a nutshell it was quite a dull experience, it is a steep climb to the top which was not an issue, I got to see the views I was after, but the park lacks appeal, it is not a park which I would linger in.

A great place to enjoy some of the landscape and versatile architecture! The park is actually man-made, but was created early in the city's history as people realized the need to maintain green spaces. Lots of history--especially in that people crowded into the park to live following the post earthquake and fire destruction in the early 1900s.

During what hours is it safe to walk through this park? I love afternoon hikes in here but am wondering if I could walk alone in the park before 9 am or after 5 pm. Any other safety recommendations?
