Located in sleepy Haight - nothing opens till 11am - ah what a lifestyle! Store is enormous - vinyl heaven. Helpful and understanding staff with everything superbly organised and catalogued. We were able to source 3 of our requests and added a couple more - really stretched the carry on luggage. A must see even if you are not buying,

This is one of the largest independent music stores in America. I couldn’t believe the size of it when I went in, not to mention how many items they had for sale. Everything is ordered well: by format, style, alphabetical and condition, making it easy to find the section you’re after. Unfortunately they didn’t have any of the items I... More

If there's one thing I love, it's finding old record shops to get discount music. Even before going, I had built up Amoeba Music in my mind to be this Mecca of all things music. Once I got there, I wouldn't say I was disappointed, there was just no way it could ever live up to the pedestal I had... More

The selection is vast and comprehensive. If you are like me and prefer to have your music on CD rather than in an electronic cloud, Amoeba Music should be on your list of things to do. Very well organized, spacious and just a fun place to browse. Extensive collection of box sets and posters. I found the prices very appealing... More

Remember going to music stores? This was a pleasant trip down memory lane for me. The place is huge and you can find lots of cool CDs, shirts, posters, etc. If you can't find something, ask someone. The staff is very well informed. Cool place to visit.

A huge room full of vinyl, CDs, books and movies. Dont expect the music lover to finish in here in under an hour. Find a spot to sit and people watch.

When I was 16 I lived as an exchange student in the Bay Area. I spent a lot of money on trips exploring the West Coast of the US. But besides the trips, the food and stuff, I spent a really, really big amount of money when I visited Amoeba Music in San Francisco what I did regularly. I absolutely... More

On our stay with friends in Haight-Ashbury last summer, I was delighted to stumble on this at the end of the street. You could spend hours in here (and I did). There are thousands and thousands of CDs and records stretching back decades, covering way more of artist's back catalogues than most shops. You could find something for any budget... More

Went to Haight Street just to visit this store and it was definitely awesome. It was the largest record/music store I have ever been to and I was able to find music from all around the world too. They sell many albums second hand as well, so it's a good place to get a deal.

Staying in Haight-Ashbury

Neighborhood Profile
The area surrounding the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, “The Haight” still exudes vibes of the 1960s counterculture as a haven for vintage clothes, music, pop posters and body piercing shops. While the Summer of Love ended decades ago, Haight-Ashbury has turned into a melting pot of hippies, hipsters, and professionals. Walking through its streets can still feel like stepping back in time. A must-see neighborhood for most music fans, it’s easy to see why these streets attracted the likes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. You’ll likely be content in The Haight day or night, just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.
