We took this tour on a crystal clear day with Monika Trobits, a tour guide who shared voluminous information about San Francisco's political and social history from 15 years before the Gold rush and into the 20th century. Much of her information about slavery and California's admission to the Union as a free state in 1850 was new to me, a 55 year resident of San Francisco. It is obvioius that Monika has, with great dedication, studied the depths of historical records on the City. As a teacher in various courses at local educational institutions, it is assured that her students will emerge with many new insights. The frosting on the cake for this tour was that Monika signed my personal copy of her book, "Antebellum and Civil War San Francisco." It is highly recommended reading by anyone who wants to become more informed about the rich historical events that shaped the City. This is a mostly walking tour with two bus rides to get around the city. Approximately 2 hours of touring, 1 hour lunch stop (not included in tour price) and a 2 hour continuation of the tour after lunch.

Thank you, Len, for taking the time to post this very complimentary review. I'm so glad that you enjoyed the tour and came away with a better understanding of San Francisco in the 1850s and early 1860s. It's always fun for me to show off the city to interested parties and to bring old San Francisco back to life through its historic sites and sights.

Monika led on the first three I attended. Excellent background to each tour put the visits in context. The in-depth knowledge and presentation of the past through photographs really helped me as a first-time visitor to SF. The pace of the walks was good and Monika's enthusiasm for history spilled over. Ric led the China Tour Town tour which was again well-researched and professionally presented. It was very much behind the scenes walk and in parts quite sensitive, which Ric dealt with very sensitively. He presented the history, the culture and potential future developments in a very professional and insightful way. All tours were excellent value for content, history and cost. I think it was a great idea for the MI to support and advertise these tours for delegates, this provided in-depth knowledge. It was also an opportunity for some of us to meet prior to the Conference. Thank you Taryn, Monika and Ric. Best wishes, Martyn

It was a pleasure meeting you, Martyn, during your recent visit to San Francisco and have you as part of my groups touring various areas of the city. I'm glad you enjoyed the tours and found them to be informative to your visit, especially as a first-time visitor from the U.K. I do hope you enjoy your upcoming visit to Colorado equally as much. Best regards.

On September 22, I joined a small group for a Mid-City walking tour arranged through the Mechanics Institute. It was lovely day, which always helps, but the tour was pretty perfect as well. The length of time was good (3-3.5 hrs), the area covered wide-ranging and interesting, and Monika did a great job of keeping us moving and entertained. I have been on several walking tours in various parts of the city, and always seem to learn something - this walk was no exception. Thanks to Monika for reminding what an amazing city this is.

Monika Trobits gave a great tour to a group of members of the Mechanics' Institute last week. She was accommodated the group's physical needs, deftly determined their special interests, and tailored her tour on the fly to interest both the locals and those who hailed from elsewhere. All the guests thought she was fabulous because she was able to weave in history with contemporary stories about all the sites we visited. I highly recommend San Francisco Journeys, especially if you feel like you've been EVERYWHERE in the City.

I recently had the pleasure of attending one of Monika's tours of the Beach Chalet, the murals within, and the outside areas with members of OLLI. I was visiting San Francisco for a couple of days and was lucky enough to be included on the tour. The Beach Chalet is a beloved local restaurant and historical landmark located near Golden Gate Park. Before the tour began, I spent my time walking around and looking at the murals. It was only after Monika's tour that I realized how little I had truly seen on my own. As we walked around the room, Monika identified the people depicted in the murals as well as their place in San Francisco history. There was nothing she didn't know and no question from the group she could not answer. Her depth and bredth of knowledge is truly staggering. She presented San Francisco history telling anecdotes that made historical figures come alive as real people. I am not a native San Franciscan, but I could hear the remarks of native San Franciscan's in the group who were delighted to learn new information. The next time I come to San Francisco, I will be sure to attend another tour with Monika. I can highly recommend her as a well-versed expert on San Francisco history and as an entertaining and informative tour guide. Be sure to dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes.

Thanks, FuzzyJavalina (I love that pseudonym), for posting such an exuberant review. I'm glad you enjoyed the murals portion of the tour along with the second part about San Francisco's Outside Lands. While I always enjoy leading tours around the city, having an attentive audience makes the experience all the better for everyone. It confirms that San Francisco history does indeed have a good future.
