When you combine a beautiful beach and a place where my four legged child can run free, you have one of my favorite places on the planet. My furry sidekick and I both LOVE this place. Go on a sunny day (68 degrees or higher, low winds). It's one of my favorite places in the entire state of California...maybe even... More

I love taking my dogs to fort funston! It's one of the only places that dogs can roam around leash free and play on the beach. Be careful because there are cliffs and if your not careful you can slip or fall especially on foggy days! Everyone for the most pet, picks up their dog's poop and there are trash... More

We spent the afternoon here after running the SF Marathon that morning. Hiking of all sorts and of course dogs, dogs and more dogs! We were visiting from Houston and unfortunately didn't have our dogs with us. They would have been in 7th Heaven! Dogs are allowed off leash and can have all the fun they desire! Also got to... There is a lot here to see and do. From the hang gliders taking off and landing, to the Nike Missle Base remnants to the amazing beach that makes up the Fort Funston Western Boundary, there is a lot to learn about and appreciate. Fort Funston was one of the bases from the Cold War that was protecting San Francisco... More

Lots of parking and when the hang gliders are out they're fun to watch. When we came here the glider is already disassembling his glider. But what I didn't realize from all the times I've been here was it was also a great place to watch the sunset. We were driving up the coast from Half Moon bay and my... More

San Francisco has pockets of nature for all to enjoy. I visited just a small part of Fort Funston today. Many folks decided to do the same with their four legged friends. Even though the fog was rolling over the hills and the wind was fierce and chilly, I still enjoyed hiking the slopes and seeing Lake Merced in the... More

Lovely walk along the Pacific coast & if you love dogs, even better ! Popular spot for dog walkers and their fury friends. Also a great spot to watch hang gliders. On a clear evening the sunset is gorgeous. parking is free & easy but it gets windy and chilly there to dress warm especially if you go for the... More

1. Nice place to watch the sunset from the bluffs 2. The old artillery emplacements are interesting for history buffs; they were set up to rebuff a Japanese invasion that never came 3. There isn't much left of the old Nike base 4. Good mini-hike down to the beach 5. Lots of raptors and shorebirds 6. Watch the hang gliders!

Popular local spot with great west-facing views. On windy days, dozens of hang-gliders launch from here and you can get up close to their equipment and watch run off the edge of the cliff. There is a nice walking trail around an old nike base where soldiers watched for invaders in WWII. There's a steep but worthwhile climb down to... More
