Really fun and unique store! My bf found an adorable gift for his sister. Definitely worth a stop in if you’re in the area.

This is an amazing idea for a store & kids place. Super creative place. I highly recommend this place especially if you’re an educator.

Fun for kids and adults!

This "store" is a very playful front for an amazing kids' writing program. It's highly creative, and pretends to be a store for pirates. You can poke around the shop, pulling out drawers and peeking at what's inside. They sell an unusual variety of items, from shark hats to pencils to jewelry. They also sell a lot of books, many of which include stories and essays written by children (they conduct writing classes for underprivileged kids in the Bay area). It was definitely a highlight on our 3-day trip to San Francisco, and I recommend it to any who has elementary-aged children, who has a great sense of humor, or who has an appreciation for creativity and writing.

Be careful, or you will be mopped!

A great place for adults and kids. There is a big tub of sand with various small treasures hidden in it. They encourage small kids to dig and find them. However, to keep one, you have to barter with them. Our daughter ended up making a drawing and giving it to them to keep her treasure. A fun experience. There are lots of interesting odds and ends around the shop. Make sure to read all of the signs on the walls and learn about mopping.

If you wander into this place you will wonder what in the world is going on. Dave Eggers, an author from Chicago now living in the Bay Area, started his 826 organization to offer free tutoring for disadvantaged children. 10 years ago I unknowingly attended a fundraiser for the 826 organization when I thought we were going to hear Ira Glass speak. This is an amazing organization. I learned that Dave Eggers had some money and wanted to start a free tutoring center. The city told him that at 826 Valencia he couldn't open a non-profit tutoring center but only a commercial space. So, while trying to figure out what to do they started ripping off dry wall and saw the old wooden timbers that were part of the current architecture and thought it looked like an old Pirate Ship. They decided they would open a "Pirate Supply" store in front to meet the city code for a commercial space and left most of the space for their free tutoring center.

You can dig for treasure, but you have to barter with the cashier to take the treasure home. Come prepared with a joke or a drawing or anything else you want to barter to have some fun with the cashier.

Open the drawers on the walls for hilarious and clever discoveries. Buy funny t-shirts, cool bags, a pirate hat for your next Halloween party, a remedy for scurvy or pink eye. Relax in the tiny puffer fish "theater".
We have been here over 30 times and make it a point to visit any 826 organization if there is one in a city we visit. Love 826 in D.C. and LA too! Want to see then all! My children and I loooove this place! My husband not so much because I spend too much money on all the cool, hilarious and whacky products. All for a great cause!!!

Ultimate creativity, brilliance and call for s good cause.

Consider your parking options carefully or else, Mates

Labeled as one of the top things to do in SF by another travel website, I made it a point to anchor my ship from asea and navigated ashore to seek out this notorious shop with compass in hand. Kids find it fascinating to pull out drawers and open up hidden hatches to reveal all the odd, but fun treasures inside. Think fake gold or toy snakes. There's even a fish theater where you can sit down and watch the fish act out a scene or two if you wish. The store is much smaller than it seems since most of it is closed off as it's part of a writing workshop and tutoring program for under-resourced youth in the Bay Area.

As well as SF, there are now chapters in New York, Los Angeles, Ann Arbor, Chicago, Boston, and DC.

Parking on metered Valencia Street here will cost you and cost you big. Don't do it! Depending on when, it will cost you $4.50 - $4.75/hr. Instead, find and park at the Mission-Bartlett Garage located at 3255 21st Street. It's only $1.50 - $2/hr. there. Those dastardly, scurvy pirates. Anything for coin I tell you.

There just aren't enough pirate supply stores in the world today. Where else can you replenish your 'Scurvy Begone' supply and get your 'Siren Song Silencer' or 'Belly of the Whale Escape Kit'? I could spend hours in this place; it really is the most fun I've ever had in a shop - and I hate shopping! The bearded mirrors also offered me a valuable opportunity to see myself with a different style of a full beard. Priceless! Just keep your wits about you or you may suffer the indignity of being 'mopped' - as I did (oh, the shame!). Plus, it's all for a praiseworthy cause. Arrr!

Great place to visit and read all the hilarious signs. Peaceful creative oasis in the middle of San Francisco. Buy your intellectual souvenir here and you support local initiatives to stimulate kids in writing short stories and poems.

This is how you 'get' what it means to be in San Francisco.

Crystallized mermaid tears...replacement eyeballs...lard, sold in bulk...bearded mirrors to allow you to imagine a different version of yourself, with different facial hair. For those with a certain dry sense of humor, this 'pirate supply store' is hilarious and enormously fun. But there's a lot more to it than that. Co-founded by the author Dave Eggers, 826 is a haven for writers, both established and blossoming. Tucked amongst the pirate gear are various editions of "Believer" magazine and stellar books published by McSweeney's (which is across the street). There is also a non-profit in the back room that helps school-aged kids hone their writing skills with the benefit of expert coaching. This is a place for people who love to read fine writing and those who may just create fine reading with their own imaginations. I will heartily recommend this spot to everyone I know visiting San Francisco.
