I love Toronado, the atmosphere, the decor and of course the beer selection. The barman was really helpful and gave us tasters of his favourite beers. A great place to spend an afternoon/early evening/night.

The server was rude before I even spoke a word and I witnessed the him getting surly with another customer, someone with an accent, perhaps a tourist, who offended by asking a question about the beer on tap. It wasn't crowded. They staff was not especially busy. I learned later that this place deliberately cultivates a reputation for bad service.... More

If you like beer and you know what you like, this is the place for you. If you don't know the difference between a lager and a double IPA move along. This is a temple for the devout, an altar to the Gods of Ale, a cash only watering hole for the worthy, only the finest brews shall pour from... More

A great bar, epic even. Choice of beer was outstanding (all $5-7) and the bar staff really friendly with plenty of info about the beers and brewing in California. Locals were friendly to with plenty of advice on hand before our 1700m roadtrip. The hotdogs nextdoor were amazing, and your welcome to bring them in and eat them at the... More

We stopped here for a quick drink while out strolling. It's a really cool bar and I'd say that it would be great to go to at night time. The toilets are especially cool! They have a juke box too if you've got a hankering for a bit of hard rock music!

If you like beer, this is the place to go. Grab a pint of Pliny the Elder for only $6. The beer selection was phenomenal and the prices were incredible. All beers were $6 or less. Totally funky place with an eclectic music selection. Totally dug this place.

Being from overseas, this place looks and sounds confronting from outside. They should have a photo of the bar in the dictionary next to Dive Bar But go in, it's not unfriendly. It's just no nonsense with an amazing tap list. Wow. Beer heaven. I was there mid week, afternoon. It wasn't busy but it wasn't empty. Friendly local recommended... More

Brilliant pub, and great staff - one fine gentleman recommended the Cedar Lodge in Yosemite and it was brilliant. Terrific to have a fine cask ale, and you can bring your own food (nice sausages from next door) - be considerate, of course, and tidy your own food things.

Amazing bar with great prices, great selection and even better service. The bearded bartender with glasses and a Giants hat was amazing! Answered all our questions, suggested great beers, and was exceedingly friendly even though it was busy. Definitely look for him!

The Toronado has simply become my standard against which all future dive bars will be judged. A simple, no-nonsense atmosphere with a beer list that is anything but... and prices that are killer cheap in a city known for extravagance. I go there anytime I'm in San Francisco, and I never, ever want to leave.

Staying in Haight-Ashbury

Neighborhood Profile
Haight-Ashbury
The area surrounding the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, “The Haight” still exudes vibes of the 1960s counterculture as a haven for vintage clothes, music, pop posters and body piercing shops. While the Summer of Love ended decades ago, Haight-Ashbury has turned into a melting pot of hippies, hipsters, and professionals. Walking through its streets can still feel like stepping back in time. A must-see neighborhood for most music fans, it’s easy to see why these streets attracted the likes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. You’ll likely be content in The Haight day or night, just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.
