Amazing bar with great prices, great selection and even better service. The bearded bartender with glasses and a Giants hat was amazing! Answered all our questions, suggested great beers, and was exceedingly friendly even though it was busy. Definitely look for him!

The Toronado has simply become my standard against which all future dive bars will be judged. A simple, no-nonsense atmosphere with a beer list that is anything but... and prices that are killer cheap in a city known for extravagance. I go there anytime I'm in San Francisco, and I never, ever want to leave.

Crowded. Check. Bouncer. Check. Beers on tap. Check. All sorts of beer memorabilia on the wall. Check. Cash only. Crap, but there's an ATM. Toronado is a dive bar on Haight St if you didn't already know. The place was busy when we managed to walk in and busy when we stumbled out. There are plenty of TV flatscreens to... More

I have been going here for almost 15 years. So what! Listen, this place has a pulse and it is more about the vibe and being a place that is unassuming. Sure, the bartenders are a-holes. . . that's part of the charm and its by designed to keep the bone heads who leave lousy tips and slam back a... More

Funny timing - the evening before I had my first Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA - so darn good! Out we head to Toronado the next night went for a Pliny, the Elder - what a letdown! As all reviewers have noted - this is a noisy, crowded, bare bones bar noted only for the extensive beer selection. And really, there... More

I really can't fault the beer. Great selection and served in good condition. They even have a cask beer selection which is nice if you are from the UK. Sadly though my enjoyment of the bar was overshadowed by a very aggressive barman tearing strips off a customer who he felt had left a derisory tip. Seems like unless you... More

I would not visit this bar again. The bar has a lot of character with nice beer selection. But, the employees stink and service levels, or lack thereof, make this a bad place. I don't see how this place stays in business.

Yeah, the bartenders are perpetually grumpy. So what? The beer selection is unrivaled. I stop here every time I am in SF.

I'd been on a search for Pliny the Elder on draft on previous visits to San Francisco. As far as I know, this is one of two places in the city to get it. I much prefer this place to the other (a hotel bar downtown). It seems like a dive, and I guess it is, but it was clean... More

Dark, dingy and divey buuut with a huge assortment of beers. Was there in the mid-afternoon so the crowds hadn't shown up yet so there was plenty of seating but I can see how this place can get packed. Happy hour deals are great considering the kinds of beer they are serving, no bud-lite here. Walk in, inhale the stale... More

Staying in Haight-Ashbury

Neighborhood Profile
Haight-Ashbury
The area surrounding the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, “The Haight” still exudes vibes of the 1960s counterculture as a haven for vintage clothes, music, pop posters and body piercing shops. While the Summer of Love ended decades ago, Haight-Ashbury has turned into a melting pot of hippies, hipsters, and professionals. Walking through its streets can still feel like stepping back in time. A must-see neighborhood for most music fans, it’s easy to see why these streets attracted the likes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. You’ll likely be content in The Haight day or night, just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.
