The city has a homeless problem, and it is very visibly evident in the library. Books are urinated on, only one bathroom is available, and often the eccentrics of the space can make getting work done a dicey proposition.

The San Francisco public library has everything you want. Books, movies, e-books, magazines, children's stories and programs.. Adult programs. A place to study, relax and get together with a friend. What more can you ask for? And it is FREE!

1. Large collection of books - old and new ones. 2. A number of friendly and helpful staff. There are also a number who are rude and unhelpful. 3. Can be dirty and clean at times. 4. Restroom is smelly even if there is a maintenance person. I think he/she uses a mop that ought to be thrown already. Get... More

Good place to spend looking for anything that you might want to read and see. Planets of resource and nice place to spend some time.

Beautiful building. Cost a fortune. First controversy was that books were tossed given limited shelving space and to create a larger atrium. Wonderful place for the homeless. Free use of computer, use of bathrooms to wash oneself and clothes, and the library can get quite stinky and unsafe. However, certain parts of the library are dedicated to various groups such... This building was a failure the day it opened as it did not satisfy the intended purpose as a library. But with that said it is a marvelous piece of architecture on the inside. Start on the top floor & walk down to the first.

Just keep eye out for homeless in some spots. Annoying but not dangerous. Lots and lots of book and library is in interesting part of city.

I live in San Francisco, but I would encourage anyone who is visiting SF, to stop at the main Library on Larkin St. Although I use a neighborhood branch to borrow my books, I make it a point to stop a the head library a couple of times a year, just to look at magazines and periodicals and spend some... The facade of the library is quite foreboding. It's cement reminds me of other institutions but once inside, there's lots to see and do. There are exhibits and talks on the lower level, a great low-cost book shop with many great titles and you can use the library to access the internet in a pinch. The library provides a wonderful... Very accessible and walkable from downtown or Union Square. Impressive and imposing building with great architectural design. Plenty of books and interesting objects displayed in several stories. I love the Filipiniana section with ample collection of books.

Staying in Civic Center

Neighborhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
