About
ust through the lobby of The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel is the famed Redwood Room. This intimate yet expansive bar has been at the center of the San Francisco social scene since it opened on the day after Prohibition was repealed. Luxuriate in the warmth from walls paneled from the wood of a single redwood tree. In addition to exquisite and artisanal cocktails you will find top shelf liquors, wines, beers, and gourmet small plates, some of which incorporate honey from the hotel’s rooftop bee sanctuary.

Business
I have recently visited Redwood Room in San Francisco with a group of business partners for a drink and snacks.

The atmosphere is fantastic, very calm lighting, nice music and beautiful waitresses who also happen to be very helpful.

I am not a big fan of modern contemporary dinning style but others loved it.

I would recommend this place for a casual date or drinks.

The bar is inside the Clift Hotel. I really enjoyed it, and I loved the decor. The seating is very nice, and they have a couple of tasty snacks, including flatbread and chicken with a peanut sauce. Very nice atmosphere and the service is not bad. Not to be missed in my opinion when looking for a nice cosy spot for a drink.

Walking in to the redwood room is always a delightful experience. The lobby of the Clift hotel is inviting in itself, on the right hand side of the entrance, is a strategically positioned fire place that gives you a taste of what’s to come. When entering, you are struck by the deep browns and velvet reds that give the place a rich sexy feel. The music is never too load or intruding. The drinks are delicious and the bartenders know their trade (if you are in to Foo foo drinks, try the litchi martini, Yummy!). The crowed is mostly tourists (higher end tourists) and are in town for a convention, the locales go there as well, mostly the marina type, but on Saturdays when there are parties, you will find all types of the beautiful people. You can order food at the bar from Asia de cuba up until 11:00pm, now, I have tried tuna tartar in almost EVERY restaurant in the city that offers it, but the tuna pica at the redwood room is out of this world! It’s a bit pricey; still, it is worth every penny. The dish arrives in the form of a layered tower of wide wonton crisps mounted by a delicious blend of fresh fatty tune complimented by coconut confit, almond slivers, Spanish olives and served with pickled cucumber on the side. Savor this dish, you will not find another quite like it (even at masa’s, which is wonderful and respectfully one of the better restaurants I have EVER been to, still the tunapica triumphs in my book)

My wife and I went after our dinner to have a couple of drinks. There wasn’t a line to get in which was nice however it was crowded. Not too much difficulty in getting a drink at the bar but it didn’t hurt that my wife in very attractive. There isn’t any room to really sit down unless you reserved a table. We were looking for more a lounge type of place where we could sit down and talk...with out our kids for a night. The music was bordering on the techno side and this just wasn’t what we were into for this night. It would be a fun place to have a group of people if you had a table. I am approaching 40 and married so this place might have suited me in my younger days.

Iconic bar – dark inside with a great, spooky feeling –l ook at the pictures on the wall you think they are watching you. We went for the happy hour and had a couple of drinks on our first night in San Fran – we also had bar nibbles, which were delicious and huge portions we ordered two fries and two chips between 3 – well one each would have been enough.

. . .you have to have style. Being a trendsetter, good looking, and gainfully employed is key here. Drinks are not cheap and after parking or valet, you are on your way to spending a couple hundred easy. Now if you throw in reserving a table, it’s an expensive night, but well worth it. This is a must-see in San Francisco.

The Redwood Room brings out your inner statement. That being said, whatever statement you'd like to make, make it! I ran into a couple of SF 49ers in the elevator here a few years back, and I thought, “shouldn’t they be preparing for a game?” Then I thought how could they prepare? This place relaxes you and opens you up to a good time. Also, I am a Raider fan, so I thought, who cares, and I hope they have too much fun!

Overall the crowd is young, under 30, with a mix of 40-50 thrown in to give it the maturity which keeps this venue on my radar. You will have high society come through as well as some people who look like they are starting out in life, and should probably watch their spending. It’s all here, but everyone always seems to be on the same wavelength and that is, let’s drink up and celebrate!

Some features - this is one of the best bars in the bay area if you could ever get to the bar. It’s a big bar, with lines of people waiting for drinks. So get there early, it gets crowded quick! I suggest getting a few friends together and buying a table area, like you do in Vega$. More features - there’s action here for the single man and lady of any age. The people look good and the drinks are strong. What a mix! More features - the big chair in the lobby for picture seekers; the moving eyes on the wall portraits (comes in handy after a few drinks), and drinks being allowed in the lobby. The latter is cool, because you may want to come in and not mix it up, just relax in the lobby area with a drink while taking it all in. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday night. The food is decent, but its basic bar fair. Redwood Room is cool, and still current, a place to bring a friend from out of town, throw down on drinks and either make this one a destination or a pit stop.

Over-hyped place with dark, clubby atmosphere, soaring ceilings & abysmal "art" (i.e. people staring at you) via plasma T.V. screens. Some might consider this upscale, but it's more akin to frat boys dressed up in suits, older men having mid-life crises, and women in their 30's & 40's (trying to appear younger) sitting at the bar twirling their hair dressed in sensible pants and shoes, but showing a hint of cleavage. Sofas and chairs, aside from the bar, must be RESERVED. Glasses of wine tend to be $10-$11. Service is below average. You couldn't PAY me to go here again!

Stopped in for a drink to check out the bar that I had not been in 40-50 years. My first visit in the "old" days, I was denied entry because I did not have a coat and tie on. Still Old San Francisco ambiance, a very pleasant bar for a drink. Surprised the Martini (Gordon's Gin) a very reasonable price for San Francisco. Probably still a dress code, but not having on a coat and tie seems to be gone. The lighting fixtures and walls appear to be original. Furniture has been changed. Study up on the history of the room, the designers and decorators before visiting. Most likely parking, but expect it to be expensive. Good location, close to many of the hotels. Check hours of operation--I think it opened at 5:00 PM when I was there.

We went to the Redwood Room in the Clift Hotel for a romantic date and liquid delights after the theater.

This is a spot I have visited for over 35 years. The gracious decor has been chicly and edgily updated from the previous classic clubby wooded ambience. The new space itself is worth a view, if not a full evening destination visit.

The female DJ provided an upbeat, highly danceable backdrop to conversation and for listening pleasure. While there is no dance floor, many patrons felt comfortable moving their bodies sinuously to the beat, in the ample space around the seating.

It took over 15 minutes before host Alejandro came to greet us and offer a menu. There were several suited hosts in evidence, gliding around, but their attention was not directed towards the customers.

After our tasting order of two glasses of champagne, there was another period of 10 minutes of dry neglect before I felt compelled to go seek attention from the host or manager. It's certainly not what one would expect from a high end bar, with prices to match.

Our assigned waitress Vanessa seemed unable to cope with serving a couple of glasses of champagne in 10 minutes. Was it poor training? Genetic inability? A nervous breakdown? Regardless, she would be well-advised to seek an alternative career path.

After making my displeasure known, manager Max came to offer apologies and a gracious offer of complimentary champagne while our ordered bottle was being sufficiently chilled. I requested another waitress, and we were assigned Elizabeth, who clearly has had more experience and capability. She checked on us regularly, topped our glasses, and provided fruit appetizers gratis, to complement our drinks.

Max explained that there had been a recent change in ownership and management, and a shortage of waitstaff, which perhaps explain the dearth of attentive service, the hallmark of a well run establishment. The host Alejandro, manager Max and waitress Elizabeth retrieved what might have been a 1 star review - abysmal; I upgraded to the 4 stars currently assigned with the benefit of balanced reflection and a good nights sleep.
