This is the most convenient theater in SF to public transportation and parking. It's not a huge theater, so most of the seats are good. There are cushions for children or anyone that is short. I usually get one to raise me especially if the person in front of you is tall. We've sat in the orchestra and mezzanine. The... More

I see lots of theatre. If in SF, you gotta go to this old theatre. Historical and iconic---90 years old or so. 2000 or so seats. Classic architecture. No bad seat but restrooms for both male and female need to be enlarged/expanded. While I didn't enjoy Neverland, I liked walking up and getting decent seat 45 minutes prior to showtime.... More

I guess we are spoiled living in LA and seeing most musicals at the Pantages. The Orpheum is an old traditional theater in a lousy neighborhood with unbelievably uncomfortable seats. Sorry....

Despite being huge, this is a pretty decent place to see live theatre. It has great acoustics and is able to move people in and out pretty quickly. Could use more bathrooms!!

My favorite musical in a pretty good theatre. Good location in the center of the city. And you can buy the tickets there before the show.

I went to see a matinee of the Lion King as a Christmas present from my Californian hosts. the show was out of this world. The opening scene was stunning. The theatre, however, could be much better. Every so often, I could smell what I can only describe as stale vomit. it was really stomach churning and distracted from the... More

I love the smaller, historic theaters! They're large enough to accommodate a good-sized audience, but they're smaller size feels more intimate. As an example, we had a close-up introduction when many of The Lion King "animals" entered the theater through the audience, coming down the two aisles. Perfect!!

This was a wonderful, spirited production of The Lion King in a beautiful, historic theater. The actors genuinely looked like they were having a wonderful time on stage, acoustics were great, and the live orchestra was top notch. Definitely worth the VIP Package price.

Went to see the Lion King and it was great, the play and the theater. What a wonderful setting for such a creative and inspiring play. It is a "special event" to go to, not something you get to do every week or month. Such a grand restored theater in SF does not come cheap, nor does such a staging... More

Neighborhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
