Read every informational display and marker. Visit some of the most famous graves and memorials. This is a very famous place, in one of the most beautiful nature settings you will ever see. Take your time, this place and the people who came to rest here deserve that.

This is a large and tranquil facility where many deceased servicemen and women and spouses are buried.
There are a few monuments but almost all tombstones are similar white stone with names, ranks, branch of service and wars they served in engraved.
You enter through gates near the Presidio Main Post west and slightly uphill from the Visitor Center. The cemetery then spreads west and uphill. There are a few parking areas within and just outside the a few by the entrance.
It is fitting that the grounds are well maintained and offer sweeping views.
There are restrooms just slightly up from the entrance and to the right of the buildings.

From the Nauman Rd trailhead, the walk to the National Cemetery (and Golden Gate Bridge) overlook passes through memorial stones containing haunting quotations on life given for war. Pause for thought

We paid our respects to the many people - American heroes who serve in the military - at one of the largest national cemeterys in the country.

We were staying at the Inn in the Presidio so visited here when cycling to the bridge.
It’s a lovely spot overlooking the bridge and beautifully kept. The graves span many conflicts and vary from simple whitened headstones to more ornate structures but all in neat lines.
It was a very peaceful way to begin the day and well worth a detour if in the area

The first National Cemetery on the West Coast, the Golden Gate National Cemetery is set in the most beautiful location with views out to the Golden Gate Bridge. It is currently closed to new burials unless a person already has a site reserved or a site opens due to a disinternment. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz is buried here as well as numerous medal of honor winners....and thousands of men and women who served our country.

This National Cemetery is located just off the main post of the Presidio overlooking San Francisco Bay. Highway 101 is getting closer and closer to the cemetery, due to the recent construction project. This is still a very beautiful and well-kept cemetery with a lot of history to be read on the granite markers of these heroes from the Spanish-American war, Civil war and WWII. A kiosk outside the cemetery office, will allow you to rapidly locate a deceased.
***Admiral Nimitz is not buried here, he is interred at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno***

I visited the Civil War Memorial dedicated to Union General George Henry Thomas. He was the one who saved the Union by defending the retreat from the Battle of Chickamagua in September 1863. He was also stationed at the Presido for a time, but not buried there. The veteran I visited to pay my respects: Henry Glenville Shaw, First Lieutenant in the 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a famous battle group.
One thing of note, his wife is also buried with him, but not mentioned of the gravestone. It is a beautiful location, in a beautiful city. There are only 3 cemeteries in San Francisco now, the rest were relocated in Colma.

We were visiting the Presidio area. In one area of the presidio we found the San Francisco National Cemetary. Over 30,000 of the nation's military veterans and their familes are buried here.
There are Monterey Cypress trees at the cemetary. The cemetary is on a hill slope overlooking San Francisco Bay.
Among the dead buried there, there are Civil War Generals, Buffalo Soldiers, Medal of Honor recipients, and a Union Spy.
