We really enjoyed our docent tour of City Hall with Laurie. Initially attracted by the lovely exterior and by a recommendation from our Uber driver who worked nearby, a guided visit gave us a great insight into the architecture, history and a slice of local life as we glimpsed the Superintendents in session and wedding parties arriving for their services.... The City Hall of the great City of San Francisco is an absolute must for architecture and history buffs. The majestic Beaux-Arts building was built in 1915 and later retro-fitted after the 1989 earthquake to stabilize its dome. This dome rivals the domes of the Opera Garnier in Paris and the United States Capital Building in Washington DC. For a... More

This is a city jewel that was beautifully restored a few years ago. They have great art exhibits in the basement and you often see couples getting married in the second floor cuppula.

Happened to walk past this beautiful building on the way to someplace else ... it is architecturally interesting in the way that says it is from a time long past. Great Photo Ops!

Take the free doscent tour at 10am. He was worked in that building for over 20 years and can take you to all sorts of restrictioned rooms. Fun, fact filled tour not just of city hall, but of SF. Go to Asian Art Museum, which is next door, afterwards.

The City Hall in SF is incredibly beautiful, another great example of Beaux-Arts architecture. The building is very close to the United Nations building and memorial, so these two attractions could be done in tandem. The area is a little bit sketchy, so I'm not sure if it's a good idea to go there at night. When we went, police... More

The civic Center area has stunning buildings. I only went in the city hall but was amazed by the architecture. There are free tours but we only walked around. Spent about 20min inside. Worth a quick stop if you are near by. Keep in mind that in the evenings the area has lights all over the building.

SF City Hall is a free attraction and I really cannot recommend it enough, hear a bit about the history of City Hall, Dr Carlton B Goodlett and SF. This place will blow you away. Airport style security as you enter, but once you are in you are free to wander around unescorted, although there is a free tour, highly... More

I've lived in the SF bay area for almost all of my life and have driven by the SF City Hall many times but I'd never been inside. This is probably because City Hall is open during normal business hours and I'm usually in the city on a weekend or in the evening. So I decided to go on the... More

Staying in Civic Center

Neighborhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
