We only stopped here for a moment to look at the bison. There were 3 in the field when we visited and you can walk right up to the fence. It is situated on an accessible and safe road so it is easy to get to. It was cool to see some bison and the area looks fairly well maintained, however you probably wouldn't want to spend more than 10 minutes here as it's just the bison roaming around and not much else.

Loved seeing the bison during our walk through GG Park. There are benches outside the paddock area where you can sit and watch them without getting very close. It is rare to see groups of bison, so when you do, it is important to take a good look. Unfortunately the whole time we were watching them all they did was eat with their heads down, so we couldn't get any great photos, but it was still a treat to see them. Located in the northwestern part of the park.

The Bison Paddock at Golden Gate Park is NOT worth going out of your way for. If you happen to be in the area, perhaps transiting between the Academy of Sciences and the Dutch Windmill or something like that, go ahead, pull over, and see if the Bison are roaming around their paddock for a few minutes. But this is not a "must see" destination.

As it so happens, we were transiting between the Koret Children's Quarter and Dutch Windmill on our way out to Lands End, so it was on the way. We pulled over and spent about 5 minutes trying to see the bison, but they were all in a smaller pen for some reason behind multiple fences instead of roaming around the paddock. Don't kid yourself: this is just as much of a zoo as the SF or Oakland Zoos. The bison are kept in a contained area and not "roaming free". And while the price is free, you're better off going to the Oakland Zoo where they have a REALLY good Bison exhibit that you can even see from the Gondola.

At my special request, our friends drove us here. Initially the bison seemed a long way off but you could walk around and get closer. They are such lovely animals. A highlight of my day.

If you have extra time this should be on your list of things to see in Golden Gate Park. This Bison range is visible from the road. Although not as close as Yellowstone, the views of the animals are cool. Touching or feeding us not possible and not allowed.

The easiest way to get here is with a car. Parking is available on the street. You could also bike here. Or walk if your coming from Ocean Ave.

This is a fantastic open field that features a dozen or so wild bison.
The huge animals aren't too afraid to get close to the fence, but remember - those are wild animal, no matter how "domesticated" they are in this park.

Unless you've traveled to the dakotas or rocky mountain areas you may never see an american bison outside of a zoo.

The paddock in Golden Gate Park is a wide expanse where the bison are free to roam. Sadly it appears the herd is getting smaller. The paddock is a real treat for city kids who otherwise might never be exposed to bisons.

Because the bison can roam the paddock you may not get a close-up view so bring your binoculars but perhaps you will get lucky.

Not an exciting place to visit but if you have never seen bison otherwise; I would definitely recommend a visit.

There is a wide expanse for the bison to graze. But they were all confined in a small area, blocked behind fences. Not much to see.

It is amazing that Golden Gate Park is doing their part to protect these beautiful creatures which sadly were overhunted in the US’s not too distant past. They are huge creatures and seem to keep a good distance from the front of their paddock. Still you can get a sense of their size and enjoy their beauty.
