We love the South Bay Area of San Francisco. Its where Silicon Valley is. Its where a lot of people live. There is good ethnic food. Its home of many world class universities and colleges such as Stanford University. Today we were at Foothills Park in Palo Alto and had a wonderful overlook of the South Bay area.

The bay itself isn't much and the long causeway-bridge certainly doesn't rival those that enter the city proper. But if you're willing to drive 15-30 minutes, the hotels here are nice and about half the cost.

The South Bay is part of the San Francisco Bay area. Other names one might have heard it by is Santa Clara Valley or Silicon Valley. It is known for high tech leaders such as Apple Corporation. IIt is also the home now of the new San Francisco 49er football stadium; it will be where Superbowl is played on February 7, 2016. The area is also home of the National Hockey League San Jose Sharks. The area has leading universities such as Stanford University, San Jose State, and Jesuit University Santa Clara University, and others. I have enjoyed visiting all three and spending much time at Stanford University working on their medical and academic programs there. It has leading shopping centers that rival and surpass Union Square area such as the combination of Santana Row and Westfield Mall (across the street from one another). There are designer clothing stores. I enjoy shopping in this area on a regular basis. Thee are also premium outlets in Gilroy and Great Mall of Milpitas. The area also knows how to celebrate the holidays such as Christmas in the Park in downtown San Jose area. This is also where many of the leading hotel such as Fairmont Hotel, and others. There is an ice skating rink during this period which is fun to do. I find it a must "do" each holiday season, along with the wonderful holiday lights at Vasona Park in Los Gatos, also a south bay city. In the summer there are a lot of great music events from Shoreline Ampitheater in Mountain View to Mountain Winery and more. It is worth looking at event listings to find out all the high quality and fun summer things to do. In Gilroy for example, there is Gilroy gardens, premium outlets, and Gilroy Garlic Festival. There is so many great things about the South Bay area, that each of the cities there has a separate listing on Trip Advisor. I have visited many of the attractions in these cities and many are very fun to go to. The list of cities in this area include Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Hollilster, Los Gatos, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Martin, San Jose, San Juan Bautista, Santa Clara, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale. There are nice parks, museums, and its worth going to the area if in San Francisco. One way to get to the area is by taking Cal Train. Bart is also working on opening stations to service this area in the next few years. There is often an intense rivalry between San Francisco and Santa Clara Valley. For instance, the San Francisco Giants have blocked San Jose from having the Oakland A's baseball team move there for years. However, I find both areas are great areas in the San Francisco Bay Area. Also, San Francisco people love to say "do not rent" a car in San Francisco to limit ability to visit this area. While I can understand it as a "budgetary" issue for many due to the high cost of parking in San Francisco, it also prevents people from finding out the amazing place the entire San Francisco Bay Area is.

South Bay is the area below San Francisco distinguised by, among other places, silicone valley. This box shows a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge take from the Marin Headlands and has nothing at all to do with S.F. What gives?

This is very industrial and spread out. You'll need a car to do stuff, and there are not any real neighbors to walk the shops in yet. We went to a cooking demonstration here at a local, very well known appliance store, and had a wonderful time. Then we went on into the city for lunch and shopping.
