I have heard stories, but I could never in my life imagine how dirty and disgusting this city is. I saw homeless/drug addicts/ mentally ill everywhere.. I watched open drug use of all kinds, fights, people going to the bathroom in the streets. I can not believe this is happening in an American city. The Mayor, Governor, and elected officials should be ashamed at themselves for letting this happen to what could be a beutiful city. You will iether smell weed or filth while walking around.

Horrible! I wouldn’t even give it one star but it’s required.

Stay away from Market street or anywhere a block or so away from Union Square toward Market street...

I was here just five years ago and it was not bad. But now, drug addicted homeless EVERYWHERE… and piles of trash. It smelled like urine.

I used to enjoy exploring the city on foot but I felt so unsafe this time.

I will never come back to this area.

My husband and I arrived in San Francisco on the 29th December and was shocked at the filth, drugs and so very many homeless people.
We did the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street and the ‘Painted Ladies in one day.
Pier 39 restaurants were terrible and finding any decent restaurants in San Francisco was impossible.
We were meant to stay until the 4th January but we couldn’t do one more day.
A horrible filthy, mangy city.

This is a weekly market at the Ferry Building. The outside area had lots of vendors with a good variety of items for sale. Meats, seafood, cheese, vegetables, flowers, etc. There was also plenty of places to get lunch. The shops inside are cute and interesting and are open during the week.

Stayed here for business. Horrible. The streets and completely full of homeless and unfortunates living on the street. About 30 to 60 every block. Its sad and unsafe.
The entire area smells like a sewer. The homeless pee on the street and the entire area is like a scene from a zombie movie.
The city desperately needs to do something.

Market street and the Tenderloin area are in a shockingly horrible state that I wouldn’t even expect in a 3rd world country. I have been all over the world, and no city I have been to has had this level of dangerous and filthy street people.
I felt incredibly threatened and unsafe while walking down Market St. There were no police officers in sight. I saw a thuggish man pursuing a woman down the street saying disgusting and misogynist things to her until she crossed the street. The entire area was full of mentally insane bums doing drugs, swearing, and defecting on the street in plain view. No this is not a joke or an exaggeration, see the videos online. Just literal crowds of dirty, diseased humans doing drugs and harassing people walking down the street.
I will never be back to San Francisco, this city is a complete disaster.

Okay, maybe this is just the new norm for San Francisco - but the mentally ill, junkie and homeless population is getting closer to the tourist population in SF. After my third or so visit this year, I'm thinking I'm DONE with San Francisco overall.
ANYWHERE there's a cannibis "medical" marijuana pot club, which seems to be every block along Market Street - it's a nightmare - DO NOT TAKE CHILDREN OR TEENS on the streets of SF. The smell alone (think urine, vomit, pot, alcohol in a confined space that has NEVER been cleaned-your worst bar bathroom urinal nightmare is better than this!) is enough to make you think you're in a third-world country, and the junkies in the gutters will take you to places never dreamed of for America.
Last night at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center area, along the San Francisco Library (and the Asian Art Museum and in front of SHN-Orpheum) wall on both sides of the street they were sprawled out all over the sidewalks and there was no way around them, beyond walking in the street - oh, Wait! They're in the MIDDLE of the streets, too!
The park is not a lot better and, honestly, they really are starting to outnumber the tourists, and that's not easy to do.
Unlike the Rome of the last century, at least they're not pawing all over you emptying your pockets, but you're going to feel Very Unsafe if you are a human with a nose and not used to seeing drug use, booze everywhere, and people screaming at you if you don't give them money. East Oakland seems almost safer in comparison--maybe that entire population has moved over here due to the $2,000/mo studio apartment rents?
I know much of this is because it's warmer weather (until the summer fog freezes them to the south again) and all the money flooding into SF with this recent boom; but San Francisco is BEYOND critical mass on their homeless problem and it is going to affect tourism at some point.
You work your way through the human waste on the sidewalk to get to a theater or nice restaurant for a brief respite, only to dread coming out afterwards, even if your Uber driver is parked (and praying not to get mugged or rousted by the police) and waiting to whisk you away.
Until SF cleans up its act, I say, STAY AWAY!!

Be aware of where you are when you read reviews of this street. Around union square yes there is good shopping and the cable car turnaround but even there people are sleeping on the street. And vomiting. Walk southwest (towards City Hall) and stores are vacant, drug deals are going down, people are passed out, and it's filthy. Police travel in fours (on the rare occasion you see police). Did not feel safe at all. Does the city not care or do they think tourists will just keep coming here spending our hard earned money?

Market Street is a very long and major road that divides the city in half. Some areas of Market are very typical of a nice US city, while other areas are flat-out scary. You will see severe homelessness in some areas. You will smell both urine and feces in some areas. You will be approached for money in some areas. The transition from safe to sketchy is quick and visually obvious, so just be aware and follow your instincts. If it doesn't feel or seem safe, it probably isn't. There is a police presence in some of the rougher areas, but we would not suggest going to the rougher areas of Market if you have younger kids or a stroller (i.e. if you seem like you could be a slow moving target). If you use the BART, be sure you know which station you want; for example, the Union station will drop you in the middle of a not-so-great part of Market.

Have travelled to many cities but have never encountered anything like what we saw here. There are people with mental health problems, drug addicts and homeless people everywhere which is a disgrace considering the money in the city. You cannot walk anywhere without being approached by any of the above which is the responsibility of the city but it does not seem to mean anything to them. The smell of urine in the main streets is awful and I do not know why anyone would want to spend more than a day here and I will certainly will never return or recommend this city to anyone.
