Tons of stores and restaurants along the pier; there is no way you can't find something to eat and/or buy while here. Most of the stores are very much geared towards tourists and therefore overpriced, but still worth the trip. Depending on which restaurant you go to, the prices can be fair. On the west side of the pier, you can usually get good views of the sea lions. One major drawback is that this place is VERY crowded.

This is a great place with lots of restaurant and eateries. We went there very early in the morning and the crowd was so thin. Took a stroll around the area and found the lazy sea lions lying on the floating platforms. As a first time visitor to the city, I really enjoyed the short visit to the pier.

We were visiting in early August and about 15 seals were there filling up a few floating docks. They said more would be returning near the end of the month after traveling South for breeding season. Can see Alcatraz really good from here

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with other visitors. That's right ... most of the sea lions do head south during the summer months for breeding season. We're happy to hear you enjoyed the views and we look forward to welcoming you back next time your travels bring you to San Francisco.

Pier 39 has great views of Alcatraz and is the best place to see the SF Sealions. The shops and restaurants on the Pier are overpriced compared to other areas of the city and are all full of the same touristy stuff. Worth going to see the Sealions but shop and eat elsewhere.

Pier 39 is a shopping mall aimed at tourism. Don't worry about prices, because contrary to popular belief, prices are not generally inflated at Pier 39. This is not a shopping mall for locals unless you're coming for some San Francisco Bay Area art or nostalgia. There are a couple decent restaurants, but nothing you can't find anywhere else in the city.

As a San Francisco Bay Area local, I love coming to Pier 39 just to hang out. The term Pier 39 is often synonymous with fisherman's wharf.

Pier 39 is a fairly clean/ somewhat upscale version of the trashy ocean city/ myrtle Beach entertainment pier experience.

Cheesy souvenirs, chain tourist restaurants, arcade, candy stores, toy know the drill.

What sets Pier 39 apart is the sea lions. A fairly large group (herd? pod? pack?) has taken over a set of marina moorings; there were around 50 animals there the day we visited.

They are endlessly entertaining. While this is obviously not their "natural" environment, they are in no way captive or even tamed animals; they apparently just decided that these floating docks made a good place to hang out.

Most lounge in the sun while there is a near constant low stakes conflict between a few animals that want their particular spot. It is both cute and hilarious. Watching a few hundred pounds of animals that look like a cross between a dolphin and a puppy bumping each other with their bodies as they waddle around on legs that are clearly adapted to the water is a singular experience. Seeing them gracefully swim away after being knocked is such a counterpoint.

We stayed for about 45 minutes, but could have watched for longer. Definitely a must do.

This is still the biggest ripoff of any pier that i have visited for tourist in any city in this country . Imagine paying $70.00 for a sweatshirt with costum lettering on it . What a ripoff .As i walked along the pier i came upon a fossilized rock selling for $400.00 What a Stupid price . This pier should be torn down and left for the Seals .

Visited the peir on all 3 days of our stay. Plenty of shops and food to choose from. The sea lions are very cool to see in a somewhat natural setting... at least outside of a zoo.

My 14 year old enjoyed the visit too so definetely kid friendly. The entire area seems very safe although we did pass a few homeless close to the entry.

We did visit on a Friday - Sunday and the pier was very busy at all times of the day. If you don't like poeple or are worried about covid in large groups then I would probably skip this one.

See california elephant seals as they tan on wood planks, window shop unique stores and eat at numerous restaurants. One can spend all day here being outside and enjoying the waterfront view. Can get windy so always bring a jacket. On weeknights after 6 pm, park at the Academy of Arts lots for $6 a night.

Pier 39 has been a popular tourist attraction forever. In my book, it’s a 15 minute stop where you will pay 3 times normal for everything from a Coke to food. San Francisco isn’t anywhere near the city it used to be, and the Fisherman’s Wharf area has suffered with the rest of the attractions throughout the city. This will most likely be our last visit to the area. If you make it more than 15 minutes rolling your eyes at the prices and junk for sale, you beat me.
