No trip to San Francisco is complete without this stop. MUST book several weeks in advance. Lucky for us I did. The day of the trip people were trying to buy tickets and it was sold out every trip for a month. Alcatraz was a little too sanitized for me. I was expecting more grit, but still very worth it.

Order your tickets way in advance or you will not be seeing Alcatraz. We actually did the Angel Island and Alcatraz combination and loved it. Spend the extra money and do both if you have the time. Anyways, Alcatraz was so cool. I literally felt like I was in a movie set. It didn't seem real. It's so clean too... More

Book early to avoid being disappointed. We loved the whole experience but in particular the audio tour which both boys aged 11 and 14 really enjoyed.

We had a great time touring Alcatraz. The tickets are timed and you need to be in line to board the ferry at least 30 minutes before the time on your ticket. If you have disabilities, like walking uphill, they have a tram to assist you up the hill. Hiking up is like climbing 13 stories. The audio assist in... More

A really interesting place. We started with a park ranger's talk on escapes, but got bored and ditched it. The audio tour, however, is FABULOUS! Inmates and guards both contribute to the narrative. Just the right amount of information is given so not to roam into boring. I highly recommend getting there early! We left about noon and the place... More

If we had booked early, you can buy tickets for this tour very reasonably from Alcatraz (approx. $40.) We booked late and had to buy the more expensive "tour company" packages (approx. $100.) that include Alcatraz and lots of extras, but are twice the price. Lesson: plan ahead. The tour itself is well worth it. The boat ride to the... More

These tours book up early (we booked just under 3 months in advance an the night tour was already booked up) so make sure if you do nothing else before arriving in San Francisco make sure you book this tour. Alcatraz is run by the National Park Service and Alcatraz cruises is the only official source for tickets. Make sure... More

Alcatraz did not disappoint.. After a short boat ride my family and I arrived at one of the best examples of modern history I have visited. My teenager loved the macabre descriptions of the goings on and the evil inmates. My older son filmed and posted 360 degree views of island, my husband and I enjoyed the history and the... More

On a quick visit to san francisco my friend and I booked the alcatraz tour. We easily spent half the day there doing the audio cell block tour, watching the video and taking the free gardens tour around the island. The views back to the mainland were great from the island and the boat. Definitely worth a visit.

The tour of Alcatraz was one of the best I've taken. The island is naturally beautiful and full of history. I loved that the tour was conducted via individual headsets so that everyone could go at their own pace. The information was intriguing. The surrounding scenery is also beautiful. The tour is worth the price.
