Take the audio tour! It was a shame that most of the island was under construction but the jail blocks are all you need to see!

This had always been a bucket list item for me and I am only sorry it took so long to do it. The guided self-paced tour provides so much history and detail. Definitely a must-do on a trip to San Francisco. My only advice is to make sure you purchase your tickets in advance as they sell out quickly.

This tour is amazing. It was my second time visiting Alctraz this July. My first time was in 2011 and back then I did the evening tour. This time I did the morning tour which was nice and allowed me great views of San fransisco. However I still that the evening tour is great and has its own charm.

Wow! What a trip! The highlight of our holiday for sure! We pre-booked this in the UK weeks before we were due to go and SO glad we did as it was sold out until August 13th! We booked the night tour as this is the only opportunity to get to see the hospital wing, and call it a busman's... More

Book weeks in advance so that you don't mss out. Fantastically run and very well organised. Incredible history - definitely use the free headphone commentary. Make sure that you walk around the back and see the gardens (on way to exercise yard). Allow a good few hours to do properly. Inexpensive tourist attraction - including a ferry trip and great... One of the highlights of the trip to San Francisco, great boat ride across the bay and atmospheric tour of the cell house. Really well done! Only tip book early next tickets were 6 weeks away.

Apparently many city residents have not been here. We loved it as a family of four with two teenagers, 16 and 17. We all had the head sets which are included in admission price and they make the tour. We booked our tickets direct 3 months in advance, at the time we were disappointed we did not get an evening... I adore Alcatraz -- who'da thunk? Growing up locally, I happened to be among the earliest tourists visiting the island in its life as an "attraction," in 1975 (school field trip). It was riveting, which was a big surprise, I did not expect to enjoy it so. In the meantime, I've visited at least five more times, and it's gotten... More
