We reserved our Lulu Lobster Boat ride online for my family of 4 and found only a few seats left for a 1pm Saturday afternoon ride. At 12:30 that day,we picked up our tickets and then waited to board the boat while under a shade pavilion near the dock in Bar Harbor. Seats on the boat are bench style and we were fairly close to one another, masks were required during the entire 2 hr. ride. Restrooms are at the dock and there's none aboard the boat. Once underway,we were given a tour of the shoreline and a little history of the sights we were viewing which I liked. It was a calm day on the water so we had smooth sailing. We went out to see an old lighthouse and also saw a large group of seals on the rocks. We had some luck in seeing two porpoises swimming near the boat. On the way back to the harbor, two lobster traps were pulled up and about 6 lobsters were caught. My 10yr old daughter got to hold a lobster for about 10 minutes while the first mate explained the different parts of the lobster and how to measure for legal size. All the lobsters were returned to the water after the talk about lobsters and lobster fishing was over. It was an interesting 2 hours. It's not great excitement but really a learning experience for anyone.

More than you ever thought you would know about lobsters. ( in a good way). The Seals and the Lighthouse are welcomed bonuses! Galen the guide was extremely informative , learned, funny and engaging. Captain was former USCG and skillfully maneuvered the boat on our very foggy trip. He positioned the boat so everyone could get "the view" Absolutely loved it and amazing value.

The boat travels from Bar harbor dock to Egg Island about a 20 minute trip. Depending water and weather conditions Tony the captain on our visit will carefully and thoughtfully circumnavigate Egg Island ensuring both port and starboard sides of the boat will have quality views. Wildlife observed on our trip: cormorants, eider ducks, guillemots, seals and occasional porpoise.
Gaylen the tour guide will provide near constant commentary, insights and anecdotes on the light house, it's history, MDI history and local highlights such as lobster hotel / breakwater and classic homes. .
The boat we traveled on was not actually a traditional working lobster boat. Is has demonstration lobster license and therefore is allowed to pull one of it's traps. The trap is a 3/4 scale trap but still does show the overall process. On our trip we caught about five small lobsters all less than 3.25 carapace as well as on small rock crab. the lobsters were then shown and discussed allowing all passengers to have a close up view if desired. we particularly enjoyed the detailed explanation of lobster physiology, life cycle, and very close up encounters. And perhaps is even more well suited for families with young children. It was well worth the $35 /pp. ticket.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear you enjoyed the trip. For the record the traps are not "scaled" version of normal. There are different sized traps used along the coast of Maine. We use a medium sized trap. There are larger ones and smaller ones in use by other lobstermen and women.

We traveled with another couple and it was a very good trip. Besides us older folk, there were 4 other very young couples, one who was on their honeymoon and they all loved it as much as we did. There were also a couple kids who seemed to enjoy it also. The boat was clean and well maintained. The captain seemed experience and Jen, the guide, was awesome! She was so personal and full of life and was entertaining. It gave insight into the harbor and its boats, Egg Rock lighthouse stories, the types of seals which we saw and also birds. There was a wild seal which she name Flip because every time a tourboat came out, it would show off by doing a flip in the water. Sure enough, there he was! Two lobster traps were pulled up and they explained about the job requirements of becoming a lobsterman as well as how the traps worked, the anatomy of the lobster, and actually allowed you to hold one. After the lobsters were released back into the sea, it was time to head back. All in all an excellent, fun and informative trip!

The trip on the LuLu was a very relaxing and interesting experience. Jennifer was a very knowledgeable guide who shared all sorts of interesting facts about the local scenery as well as about the lobster industry. Our trip had several young children on board and she was very good about getting them involved in the lobster harvesting experience. Our group was a full group of 30 people. The boat left on time, was clean, with comfortable seating. It does get cold away from the harbor so you would be advised to bring a jacket and/or blanket. There is no restroom on board but there are clean restroom facilities located right at the dock. Parking near the dock can be a problem so allow yourself extra time to find a parking spot and get to the pier on time.

I had so much fun on the Lulu Lobster Boat tour. I recommend this tour to all. It was both fun and informative and our guide was very funny. It was a chilly, overcast day, but we were comfortable since they were able to put some of the sides down. I do recommend bringing a blanket though, especially if you go before/ after the peak summer weather like I did. We were able to bring up several traps (all for demonstration and then the lobsters and crabs are thrown back) and pass around and take some fun photos with the lobsters. We also saw a lighthouse, some seals, and some gorgeous Maine cliffs as well on the tour. It was a great day couple of hours out overall and I recommend for couples, families, and solo adventures.

I gave our trip on LuLu Lobster Boat 3 stars because, on one hand, it was what it claimed to be: good for sight seeing, seal watching and learning about lobster fishing. However, I wish the tour guide was more of a role model and teacher for respect for the creatures she was teaching about.

Lobsters flip their tail in order to escape from enemies. During the demonstration the tour guide held the lobster up and slapped the tail over and over again in order to get it to flip it's tail. When it didn't "perform" as she wanted it to, she slapped it harder and faster over and over again. It was very disturbing, especially when it went totally limp, which she said happens when it senses danger. The more she slapped the helpless creature, the more the audience laughed...and the more they laughed, the more she whacked it.
She stated that to defend itself, lobsters pee out of their eyes. Needless to say, the creature peed out of it's eyes as she passed it around.

The saddest part of the whole trip was when she allowed young children to handle a lobster without her supervision. In modeling her behavior, they delighted in slapping around the lobster, they dropped it on the floor , pushed on it's tail, tried to scare it into peeing. After a while, it was foaming at the mouth and defenseless while the tour guide carried on a conversation with others on the boat.

We have a chance to teach reverence for nature and respect for the world we share with wildlife on excursions like this. What are we thinking when we laugh at abuse of another living thing. It was very sad. We humans just don't get it.

Highly recommend! Call early for reservations. From ticketing with Tammy and her friendly furry companion Stella to guide Galen and Captain Tony, we had a fantastic experience. Rain delayed our 330 pm trip, but we sat dry and covered on the Lulu while Galen entertained us with his sense of humor and vast knowledge of island history and LOBSTERING! An all hands-on fun trip for everyone including kids in banding, holding & learning everything lobster and fishing. All lobster are lovingly returned to the Gulf of Maine as this trip is 100% about fun, sightseeing and education. Everyone had a great time! We will definitely return for a calmer weather trip to see the Egg Rock Lighthouse and seals further out into the Gulf. High point of our day in Bar Harbor!

My family and I spent a Saturday afternoon with Galyn (sp?) on the LuLu Lobster Boat. It was one of the highlights of our trip. We were curious to learn about lobstering, and not only did we do that, but we also enjoyed a scenic cruise around the harbor and a nearby lighthouse. We saw so much wildlife! Galyn made us laugh with all of his songs and we enjoyed a wonderful afternoon learning everything there is to know about lobsters and the industry! We could not have had a better time!

I would acknowledge that we were very lucky that the day of tour was beautiful even Glendon, the tour guide, said that this type of weather is precious. Clear blue skies and sunny! On top of that, he was also just really great at providing interesting information and giving everyone on board an opportunity to interact with the lobsters that we caught (and subsequently released). Well worth it!
