We headed out of Bar Harbor on a beautiful day, and as it turns out we were lucky: The company said it had to cancel cruises on the previous five days due to rough seas. As the company warns in its FAQs, it was significantly colder offshore. We were treated to a pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins after about 75 minutes of sailing and then saw pilot whales, which apparently are an unusual sighting for this area. We then went toward a lighthouse island that was crawling with grey seals. I must say that the company does its best - cruising far and wide - to seek out whales and other marine life. The naturalist on the top deck who was narrating the cruise answered our questions and provided good insight about marine life, birds, the ocean, the shoreline, etc. All in all, it was a great trip ... until we got back into the harbor. It was one thing for the captain to urge passengers to tip the crew (although we rarely saw them and they provided no personal service), but as we disembarked one crew member stood on the narrow dock holding a giant bucket with a "TIPS" sign on it. You literally could not avoid it, making the passengers' final experience of the trip an uncomfortable and negative one. Look, I get it: Everybody wants employees to earn a good living. But these are not restaurant servers earning below minimum wage. If Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company wants their employees to earn more, then pay them a higher wage. If that means you charge the customers more, so be it - we can then evaluate the value proposition ourselves. But to jam a tip bucket in our faces upon exiting is a bad move. Why make your customers' final experience a negative one?

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We greatly appreciate the feedback. We apologize that the gratuities put a damper on your experience. Though not mandatory or customary compared to tipping a server, it is a common practice with most boat cruise operations in the area, especially for those that are seasonal. This year, with the delay in starting our boat cruises due to Covid-19, gratuities were greatly appreciated by the crew. We appreciate the feedback in regards to our search efforts, naturalist, and crew as well as our methods in communicating with customers prior to their experiences with us. We hope to serve you again in the near future!

This harbor cruise was very in depth and the crew was very knowledgeable. Was supposed to be the lighthouse cruise, but due to how choppy the bay was the crew quickly decided to reroute us for the Winter Harbor nature cruise instead. They took passenger safety seriously and still gave us a great show. We saw eagles, seals, a few lighthouses that they could get to without tossing us around too much, and the narration was great. They even refunded us the difference between the two cruises after we returned to shore!

Excellent tour! Worth the price! Julie (the Naturalist and narrator) was VERY knowledgeable and engaging. Loved that the captain made sure to do a 360 degree turn at every lighthouse so everyone could see and get pics. Enjoyed that they crew was as excited about seeing whales on the lighthouse tour as their guests were. Even with COVID felt very comfortable and enjoyed every moment! Thanks!!
