Research Sampling on Osprey
Jul 2013 • Business
I was conducting a pilot study of benthic habitats in Frenchman Bay in 2013. We chartered Osprey to sample a few deep water sites and run our remote videocameras which were tethered back to Osprey. Toby and his crew did a tremendous job. It was a pleasure to have a very experienced captain run the vessel and maneuver her into specific areas adjacent to historic fishing ledges. The vessel is extremely well laid out, comfortable to work from, stable at rest and at a high cruising speeds. Capacity for gear and students was tremendous and folks have ample area to get out of the sun as well.

Fantastic boat and crew!
Sep 2013 • Business
I am a biologist who studies the ecology of basking sharks in the Bay of Fundy/Gulf of Maine. I chartered the RV Osprey for a day in September to collect a tag that we had deployed on a basking shark off Grand Manan the prior week. Normally our tags come off the sharks a little closer to home but I guess this shark was heading south! We had a fantastic day! We sailed about 50 nm SE of Bar Harbour and successfully recovered the tag. On the way we saw a variety of marine life including, humpback whales, pilot whales, mola molas, a mako shark and a lot of white-sided dolphins. The weather was perfect but you could tell that the boat could handle rougher seas with no problems. The Osprey is an exceptionally well equipped vessel and Captain Stephenson and crew were amazingly helpful and very well informed. We had a great day! Although I hope that future tags stay a little bit closer to home I would not hesitate to charter this vessel again.

Perfect for group outings
Jul 2013 • Business
Maine Coast Heritage Trust has used Osprey on many occasions to offer trips to MDI Islands. The boat comfortably fits a larger group size and Toby offers a great experience for the group! The boat is very comfortable for longer trips, and is a smooth ride. We highly recommend using Osprey!

A wealth of knowledge and experience
Sep 2013 • Business
I am a college professor and teach Marine Natural History of the North Atlantic. We regularly spend a week around MDI, including a few offshore excursions. I've been out off of MDI in a dozen vessels with half a dozen captains. The Osprey is tight and tidy and Toby provides a wealth of knowledge, experience, and overall "personableness" that exceeded my expectations. Having John Anderson (Professor of Ecology and Natural History at College of the Atlantic) on board is certainly a huge bonus, and between Toby and John the onslaught of information about the area is gleefully nonstop. We had a great trip and would charter the Osprey and Toby again in a heartbeat.

A Day To Remember
Sep 2013 • Friends
What a great day travelling in the Gulf of Maine on the MV Osprey! This day-long trip in September was one of the activities I arranged for the workshop I coordinated for the National Association of Biology Teachers and it turned out to be the highlight of the four days we spent on Mount Desert Island. On this trip we saw lots of wildlife, including whales, seals and seabirds. Captain Toby Stephenson was very knowledgeable and made this trip a wonderful experience for all the teachers.

Great island day trip
May 2013 • Friends
We hired the Osprey to take ten people out to Great Duck Island for the day as part of a natural history/ artist seminar, and it was a great experience! The boat is very comfortable even in choppier water, and the captain and crew did a fine job. For anyone who needs a vehicle to access out-of-the-way areas of Downeast, I would definitely recommend the Osprey.

Osprey is outstanding for work near-shore
Aug 2013 • Business
In Aug 2012, our company needed a vessel in Coastal Maine to recover a robotic vehicle that had been on a mission for several months. The College of the Atlantic's R/V Osprey had a great reputation and we arranged to head out 10 miles for the recovery. This vessel is in perfect shape, and the marine crane on the starboard quarter is ideal for the task of launching and recovering instrumentation and vehicles.
The Captain, Toby Stephenson is an excellent pilot as well as ship-mate. His background and experience put him in the very top echelon of sea-faring men. He is fascinating to talk to and is involved with several very unique projects including processing whale carcasses to be used for display and study. We could easily have talked for hours or days about all the stuff we have done. I give him and the Osprey my highest recommendation.
Sincerely, Sea-Eben Franks

Bird & Island Surveys
May 2013 • Business
We have conducted seabird, falcon, and other island-related surveys using Toby S and the Osprey for the last two summers. Toby and crew work closely with their crew to make sure the field outing objectives are meet, conducted safely, and efficiently to save money and cause the least stress to animals or the field biologists. Toby's "on-water" experience is excellent and nicely matches his understanding of the natural history of the mid-coast area. His "on-water" memory of ocean or island or other features about specific-sites or micro-site conditions previous to your trip or for previous years is great and can help you fine-tune your study so you maximize your field time and the data collected. Friendliness, helpfulness, and cost make this a great way to successfully complete your project while having a great time in the mid-coast waters of Maine.

Great experience
May 2013 • Business
We took an Ecology class out on the Osprey and it was great. The captain and crew were top-notch and exceptionally accommodating. The students had a great time and the captain and crew were very helpful in answering questions and pointing out both biological and historical points of interest during our time at sea. We will DEFINITELY be coming back!

I loved my trip on the Osprey. It was so beautiful and we really got to see a lot! Captain Toby is hilarious and everyone on the boat loved him. The staff is so kind and genial. By far the best part of my trip!
