We were very excited about the prospect of walking across the sandbar during low tide to access Bar Island. And I suppose the sandbar was mildly interesting if you're interested in looking for things that might have been left behind from high tide. But once you get to Bar Island, there's not really much to do. Sure, you can take... More

Go 2 hours before or after low tide. It is an easy walk across the sand bar and the hike to the top isn't bad compared to some within the main park. Once you reach the summit, you think you have the best view. Keep going down and to the right. You should be able to see a trail leading... More

My family loves visiting Bar Island. Usually we just stick to the tide pools (this year we saw lots of star fish, a baby eel, and lots of crabs), but this year we went on the island and walked around. We saw a deer in the meadow, and looked out at the beautiful surroundings before heading back to town. We... More

Plan your hike accordingly to ensure you don't get stuck on the island due to the tide. The island itself looks like it's an old farm, lot's of apple trees! There wasn't too much to explore on the island but the gravel bar between Bar Harbor and the Island is a cool place to explore. The tide pools had all... More

It was very neat to walk over to Bar Island. Beautiful scenery. You definitely have more time than they say to walk over, explore the island and get back before the land bridge is covered in water again.

We got there while walking around and it was low tide. Very pretty. To bad we did not have the time to walk to Bar Island.

Bar Island is a unique part of Acadia National Park located a short walk from Bar Harbor's Bridge Street during low tide. You can hike the trail up to the top which provides some good views of the Harbor and town. It is available to see for about 1 1/2 hours before and after low tide.

In an area with world class hiking trails, this is more of a walk than a hike. A good hike for kids or seniors who can't handle the bigger trails in the park. It's a bit of a novelty walking across the sand bar at low tide, and a short walk with views of Bar Harbor across the water. Kids... More

Check out the sandbar at low tide. We enjoyed walking along and taking a look at what we could find sitting in the puddles or hiding under rocks. One family found a size-able crab which was neat to watch. You can walk along the sandbar then you can also optionally add on the Bar Island trail.
