Most people say its a great rainy day trip. I say its a great stop anytime. You will get to learn a lot about lobsters. This is a must visit when you are in the area.

A little unorganized but great experience. You have an option between 2 packages. Both packages have 3 stations which last about 30 minutes. One package adds on a 1/3 mile walk around the property. The lobster museum had poor sound equipment so was hard to hear but the fisherman was extremely knowledgeable. The hatchery was very interesting. The discovery zone... More

This was super casual, working lobster hatchery. Could be a super rainy day activity as well. Very interesting discussion of lobsters by a real Maine lobsterman, show and tell in the hatchery, and a retired lobster boat on premise.

The Mount Desert Island Oceanarium is a must visit for your trip to Bar Harbor! My family visited the Oceanarium on a cloudy day in August. The tour we took was very well organized (although we wished that the sessions didn't start until everyone was present - we didn't want to miss any of the great information!) and broken into... We have been to Mt. Desert Island many times but this is the first time we stopped into the Oceanarium with our children. Passionate owners, staff, and interns study and care for lobsters through their four stages of larval development before releasing them back into the wild. Amazing to see fully-formed lobsters less than one-inch long!! We learned about Maine's... More

We went to the Oceanarium on a rainy day, and we loved it! We learned a lot about baby lobsters and how they thrive. It was fun to explore the touch tanks and have a presentation on the life cycle of the lobster.

I am a regular at zoos and aquariums but this was an interesting experience and different from what I was expecting. Since it is in Maine the focus is on lobster. You get to see the development stages of the lobster, then learn about lobster fishing followed by a hands on experience with lots of ocean animals. It was a... More

We are both scuba divers and we visit a lot of aquariums. I share this because, while some may find this facility small, the facility is overflowing with information, kindness and giving. We learned so much new to us. What a wonderful gift they are giving back to our oceans, and seeing lobsters at less than an inch in size,... More

We visited here 10 or 12 years ago and returned in July 2016 during our second trip to Acadia at the request of my (now adult) children. They had great memories of it then and it did not disappoint this time. The staff here is friendly and very interested in education for all ages. The schedule of talks adds a... More

We stopped at the museum with fairly low expectations and left very impressed. The tour was set up in 30 minute increments at each station with an experienced staff person sharing information each step of the way. I expected it to be similar to salmon hatcheries I have visited, but the lobster hatchery is different. As four adults, we were... More
