I recommend a stop for those interested in a little education about lobsters.

We are both scuba divers and we visit a lot of aquariums. I share this because, while some may find this facility small, the facility is overflowing with information, kindness and giving. We learned so much new to us. What a wonderful gift they are giving back to our oceans, and seeing lobsters at less than an inch in size,... More

We visited here 10 or 12 years ago and returned in July 2016 during our second trip to Acadia at the request of my (now adult) children. They had great memories of it then and it did not disappoint this time. The staff here is friendly and very interested in education for all ages. The schedule of talks adds a... More

We stopped at the museum with fairly low expectations and left very impressed. The tour was set up in 30 minute increments at each station with an experienced staff person sharing information each step of the way. I expected it to be similar to salmon hatcheries I have visited, but the lobster hatchery is different. As four adults, we were... More

We went to visit the Oceanarium while on our vacation to Maine. It was a very neat way to learn about the growth and development of the lobsters, there was also as session with a lobster fisherman where he explained some of the details about how the lobster grows and loses it shell. Now I know about soft and hard... More

We weren't too sure what we'd find at the Oceanarium, but absolutely loved our visit! The main focus is lobsters, though you'll also learn about a few other ocean creatures as well as area trees/plant-life. Plan to stay a couple hours. When you arrive, you will be given a schedule that will efficiently rotate you through the four main areas... More

Learn about the life cycle of the lobster; how lobsters are caught; and enjoy the guided touch tank (sea stars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sand dollars, and horseshoe crabs!).

Interesting to see the only USA lobster hatchery, as opposed to eating the grown up version. Excellent talks by the guides, old fisherman tales and a short nature walk. Recommended to stop for an hour or so, but you could easily miss it when you come onto Mount Desert Island.

This is a small place but packs a load of educational exhibits for visitors. They are the only lobster hatchery in the U.S. and get no federal funding. There is a discovery room with touch tank hosted by a very enthusiastic docent, a hatchery with dozens of bubbling tanks filled with microscopic hatchlings, and a living history museum where an... My wife and I visited in mid-October while on vacation. We toured the entire place, finishing with the lobster hatchery and then the nature tour, both of which we really enjoyed. The presentation and tour at the hatchery was very interesting and informative. What we learned on the nature tour made for more interesting and enjoyable hikes through Acadia.
