My first luau experience was at the Polynesian Cultural center a few years ago. But desiring something different for this trip I painstakingly began researching all of the Luau’s on the island (there are many!). I chose chief’s Luau 1/30/2020 show because:
1. The chief is an actual chief and a world champion fire- performer. Some of the other performers are as well.
2. The pre-show activities and show are not geared specifically towards children. Children can definitely participate but it’s not all about them (there are several luaus specifically geared towards families with children)
3. Locals recommended this luau (even in a random conversation with a baggage handler at the airport)

Things to know in advance
1. Traffic is terrible on the island especially during the weekday rush. If you are traveling from Waikiki give yourself at least 1.5 hours or more to get there in time if you drive yourself or prepare to spend a significant amount of time on the bus
2. The luau’s current location is inside of a water park. Once the sun sets the ambiance definitely does not feel like one (you can not see the water slides at all during the show)
3. You are not able to select your seat the hostess will seat you in a pre-determined area based on the ticket you purchase. The earlier you arrive the closer your seat is.

My humble opinion:
1. The show was worth the money. Highly entertaining and the cast is very talented the singers and fire dancers were especially amazing!Although commercial luaus are more for tourist I felt the chief brought a level of authenticity through his story telling and passion for his culture.
2. Seats in paradise experience is worth it if especially you drink. If you want to save a few bucks there are great seats in part of the aloha section that are a bit closer but on an angled view. Royal experience is only necessary if you feel the need to be directly in front.
3. Get there early to participate in the pre show events/crafting
4. Luaus have communal seating so you will end up interacting with those around you and the Chief encourages it during parts of the show.
5. The food is just ok and plentiful. If you are a foodie (like I am) you will not be super happy but you won’t die either. You’re here for a great show.

A few years ago my mom went to Chief’s Luau and she loved it. Following her enthusiasm and advice to go and experience it myself, I went. It was such an amazing and educational experience!

Great story telling, followed by demonstrations of ancient Hawaiian customs/techniques and spectacular/beautiful dance, all perfectly interweaved to give a bit of an idea of Hawaiian/Polynesian history. Everything was easy to see and follow from where I was seated. The food that was included was plenty/diverse and delicious.

I am extremely happy I went to Chief’s Luau and I do highly recommend to come and visit too!

Best luau on the island! You feel the ' Ohana presence from the moment you walk into the space. Great drinks and food and the show was amazing. Chief Sielu Avea and his family give you a cultural experience that is electrifying, beautiful, memorizing and funny. Great way to celebrate my birthday!

The Chief made the luau a wonderful experience. His talks were informative and delivered in a genuine and at times very humorous manner. The food was top notch and the entertainment exciting. The staff were accommodating and very helpful. The best luau experience ever.

My husband and I along with my parents booked this luau since it had the best recent ratings. We had the royal package and sat right in the front row. Food was good the service was great they have you turn on a little electric tea light for food (food is all you can eat) or drink service. Chief the narrator has a dry humor witch I loved. The dancers did a dance from each major pacific island for the men and women and a did a few native culture "how used it / made it " items. Over all it was a great experience and very heart warming we loved everything about the luau I would definitely recommend

I did a lot of research and looked at a lot of luau reviews for month before our trip to Oahu. Cheif's was always among the top of the list so I went in with high expectations and was still blown away with how amazing and inclusive it was. We were seated next to a woman who had been to a few different luaus amd she said this was the best one she had been to also. Thanks again to Cheif and his family for a wonderful night!

We were last in Hawaii over 15 years ago, on big island, and attended a luau where they actually pulled the pig out of the ground and had a big dinner and dance for probably 75-100 people. So those were our thoughts going into this one. This is not a traditional luau; it is a huge gathering/show/buffet for hundreds of people bused in. It is a tourist attraction. Not to say it wasn't good; we enjoyed ourselves, but it simply wasn't what we were expecting for a luau. The food was spread out on big tables where people passed through just like a buffet line. It was good and plentiful; I even went back for second helping on some stuff. The show was quite interesting too. Our grandson even got tapped to come up on stage for an group audience participation song; he loved it. Overall, a good experience, but seemed a little overpriced. If I could do over again, I'd search for a more traditional luau, if there is such a thing in this major tourist destination.

PROS
•The host was really great. He gave a lot of information and was very funny the entire night.
•We didn't have to wear our masks the entire dinner.
•There was plenty of parking
•Because we upgraded we were right up front for the show
•The performers, male and female were really good
•The fire portion of the show was great

CONS
•The service was extremely slow. We upgraded our admission which gave us extra drinks, which were not strong at all, but couldn't even use all of the tickets because the waitress was so busy.
•The dinner was OK, not what I would expect though for the price.
•Prior to dinner we had our photo taken. They came around to the tables to ask if they wanted to buy them, they never came to our table

Honestly if I could do it again, after having already gone, I think I'd pass. The show was good but for the money spent on the Royal Experience it definitely wasn't worth the money.

I’m a nationwide/worldwide military officer (unfortunately retired now) and just want to say Chief ‘s Luau was the absolute highlight of our Hawaii trip. I was shocked at the price of a luau and had to take a chance. I chose Chief’s Luau and I could not have chosen a better one, I don’t think. They were military friendly and although the price was more than anyone would like to pay… It was worth every penny. I chose the royal experience and I would not have been upset if I would’ve chosen the top experience and paid that price. It still would’ve been worth every penny.

What we really enjoyed was the Chief takes you on a journey across different South Pacific islands and you can get just a taste of the male warrior dances and female love dances. Of course you get fire dancing. The food was all you can eat and honestly darn good. The music was all live and in character along with the warriors and dancers.

This will be the true memory of Hawaii that my family always remembers.

Thank you Chief and thank you to all of your team.

Although we were about an hour late arriving, due to Honolulu traffic and heavy rain, we still had a good time laughing at Chief's jokes and enjoying the buffet. The initial plate is prepared and then you can go back for more. There was pulled pork, fish, chicken, some sides and this amazing purple Hawaiian bread. Although multiple announcements were made to keep the masks on when not dining, many guests were not compliant. This luau is a little pricey, but aren't they all? Would definitely go again and arrive early for the pre-show activities.
