Renting a kayak from Kailua Beach Adventures gives you a whole new way to enjoy Oahu - from the water. The reservation process was smooth (get a coupon code off the internet to save some $$ too!). Be aware that these are not sea kayaks (no rudder) so you need to steer with your paddles only. We rented kayaks and ventured out on our own without a guide, but were assisted getting off the beach and then back onto the beach by a staff member which was very helpful, since the waves/wind were high the day we kayaked. We grabbed our lunch (full day rental deal) from the deli on our way to the shore. It was very good and just what we needed by the time we made it to the farthest island. Our deal also included snorkeling gear which we used off of Lanikai beach. We checked out the coral and small fish along the beach area and were lucky to also run into some sea turtles. Overall the experience was a good one. The one thing to be aware of however, is that the 'showers' are outside in the parking lot area with separate changing rooms, so you don't really have the privacy/opportunity to really get cleaned up after you turn in your kayaks. We had planned to cleanup/change and stick round on the east side of the island after kayaking but ended up heading back to Honolulu since we all really needed to shower and change under better conditions.

The crew at Kailua Beach Adventures has a good system, people were coming and going all day but checkin/out was super fast and well organized. The trip was definitely worth it for us. We decided on the 2pp half-day self-guided tour, which includes a lunch voucher at a nearby business. Because of the wind, I'd say the island wouldn't have been an ideal place to enjoy the lunch and it's not great for snorkeling. I’d hit the nearby beaches for that after kayaking. But the view is totally gorgeous and it's incredible to be on the open ocean. I really wanted to make it out to the Mokula Islands but that was definitely for the advanced kayakers. We decided to just paddle to the Flat Island, which took 20-30 mins. The The ride is no joke, as it's typically always windy on that side and therefore creates some choppy waves. We loved it though.

Kayak tour to the islands was super fun, adventurous, and exhausting. Definitely recommend checking the wind speeds prior to booking as we had to go in 20+mph winds and had an exceedingly difficult time navigating the kayak. S/O to our guide Mike for single handedly getting us to the islands, he had to hook our kayaks (1 single, 1 double) together and powered through what seemed like an eternity of kayaking and he was still in good spirits afterwards. All the staff are nice and helpful as well in the shop, idk what you are waiting for just book it.

We booked a half day kayaking trip, which included snorkeling, lunch and a brief tour of Moku Nui. KBA has their trips down to a science. Super knowledgeable, experienced guides, lots of fun, and a gorgeous setting. We had a great day paddling and exploring the island. The guides kept talking about how great (not windy) the day was, which made paddling super easy. It could be more challenging on windier days but it's completely manageable if you're in just decent shape.

Booking this in advance is a little bit of a bummer if, like us, you get an extremely windy, wavey day. Most of the folks who set out for Moku ended up just going to flat island. We were told by some local on the shore we’d never make it. So, that’s all we needed to hear to grind our teeth and power through. Oh plus, Austin towed us for ... a spell. Austin couldn’t have been more attentive, informative, safe and wonderful. We were able to snorkel and see turtles. Get a really good workout. Fall into the ocean after riding a killer waves. And generally never so enjoy getting hit in the face with salt water. I’m not sure what would’ve happened without Austin showing us the ropes, but it wouldn’t have been ideal. Highly recommend the guided tour and if you get lucky enough to get Austin, you’ll be happy. Thanks for the awesome adventure!!!

Monk seal on the shore. Stay a safe distance.

We scheduled a kayak trip and then rented bikes a few days later with Kailua Beach Adventures. Both times service was great. Tommy, our guide on the kayak trip, was a good leader on a somewhat challenging day with lots of wind and waves.

I bought the Twin Islands Adventure, where Fran was my guide. It's my first time Kayak but Fran did a really great job, patiently instructing me how to paddle correctly on our way to the island(he even tow me for more than a mile). After arriving the island, we saw seals and sea turtles. Then we went on a short hike(15 min) to the Queen's bath. The bath is a great place for taking photos. Fran help us take a few nice ones while we jumping into the bath and climbing the rocks. He also carefully help us hold belongings if necessary. Afterwards, we had lunch and go for snorkeling(fishes and sea turtles). In short, the trip really worth the price(179 dollars for a 5 mile kayak, island adventure, snorkel, 5 hours in total).

The beach was so choppy, we weren't able to launch our kayaks even though the plan for us with our 11 year old and 13 year old was to paddle in the beginner section and to the flat top island. We even paid an extra 12 dollars when we arrived for landing permits to go on the island. While the staff was nice, there was no mention of the difficult conditions at the beach. We had the rentals (double kayaks) for the entire day but were only able to paddle around the canal which was also a bit windy but doable. When we returned the kayaks after only two hours there was no mention of the conditions then either and we left. Several other families were in the same boat, it was pretty disappointing after planning an entire day of our trip to be kayaking.

Let me tell you about Brian our guide!!!!!
This was my first trip to Hawaii and I was very excited for the kayaking trip. I had been on many kayaking trips in the past and expected it to be a big group of people and one tour guide managing the whole group for a couple hours. Well was I wrong! We arrived at Kailua adventures with 4 people in our group of which two are blind friends of mine. Our guide Brian, got us all set up and took us on a private tour out to the Monks. As we began our trip, the water was extremely clear and we saw sea turtles and coral while paddling. Brian was amazing at giving specific instructions while paddling and providing very descriptive information about the surrounding environment for my two friends who are blind. Upon arrival at the monks, Brian took us all around the island and provided each a custom meal, protein bars, and a variety of drinks. This is not your regular kayaking trip. We did hiking on the island and saw a monk seal laying right by where we landed our kayaks. Brian took tons of photos of our group and sent them all to us for free. We hung out on the island for 3-4 hours, swimming, eating, hiking, and jumping into a tide pool called Queen's bath. The information, LOVE, and care, Brian had for this island was remarkable. Even though there were other groups on the monks island I felt we had the VIP experience and were the only people there. The entire trip took us about 8 hours and will forever remain the best experience in Hawaii! ASK FOR BRIAN to be your guide!

Lots of fun on this tour. At first was a little concerned about wind and wave forecast but the kayaks easily handle the waves. Our group included young and old, novice to intermediate. It was a good paddle into the wind on the way to the islands, but honestly felt like 5 min on the way back it was so fast with wind at our backs. The waves were big at the twin islands that day which make our landing a lot of fun. Our guide, Brayden, was excellent, making sure we knew how to land safely. He also gave us a nice tour of the island. On the way back he helped us to surf a couple of big waves with was awesome. Then when we reached quieter waters, we had a chance to go for a swim. Kailua Beach Adventures provided dry bags and snorkels. And they also have a store at the site in case you are missing anything at all. All in all, it was a great tour.
