Lovely local beach park with nice waves, more surfy than the other beaches here. Way less crowded, another World from Waikiki. If staying past 6pm park on street not in lot which gets locked promptly at 6pm.

I love Kalama Beach, especially since I live only a block away (so convenient). The sunrises are beautiful and lots of beach to walk (this is even the beach the past President loves to visit on his trips to Oahu). No bathrooms or showers. Little shade from trees. Most of the beach is open, but it is less crowded than Kailua Beach or Lanikai (same gorgeous sand though). Parking can be painful as you have to park approximately a block away on one of the side streets. Just be courteous and not block mailboxes, driveways, etc.

On July 17, 1954, my Dad purchased a house and lot for a mere $15,000 and it's located on Hauoli St. in Kailua, Oahu. I remembered that date well as my Dad always reminded me that it was for my 10th birthday gift. The house was a three bedroom, one bath home that sat on a 10,000 square feet piece of property and today is worth well over a million as well as other homes located in the Coconut Grove area. While growing up I soon inherited a newspaper route which covered Hauoli St., Mookua St. and part of N. Kalaheo Ave. The last home on my route happened to be the Boettcher Estate, which is now Kalama Beach Park owned by the city. I always dreamt that someday I would be able to own this estate, wishful thinking. During the summer my brother and I got up early and delivered all of our papers before the sun even came up. We would return home and make ourselves a couple of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, grab our fishing poles, sand sliding boards and boogie boards and head for Kalama Beach. As the sun was rising over Lanikai, we would cast out our fishing lines in hopes of catching something and if we did we would bury it in the wet cold sand until it was time to go home. Then out came the sand sliding boards and we would be sand sliding until the sun bathers came out to sun bath on the beach. Then it was time to bring out the boogie boards and do some body surfing until around 4 PM when Dad got home from work. Meanwhile my Mom had been at home all day preparing dinner and when Dad got home it was time to get the hibachi in the car and head for Kailua Beach. While Mom and Dad were cooking dinner on the hibachi, my brother and I would cast our lines out again in hopes of adding some fresh fish to be put on the hibachi. There were other times that we'd even venture into Lanikai to do some fishing. Kailua Beach is just adjacent to Kalama Beach and in 1998 and 2011 it was ranked as the number one beach in the USA. Lanikai Beach seems to be the more popular beach probably because of the Mokulua Islands, however in 1996 it was named the best beach in the USA. So there you have it, take your pick, Lanikai Beach, Kailua Beach or Kalama Beach, to me it's all in God's country and they're all the greatest.

Much Aloha,
Champion

Worth the drive from Waikiki over the Pali Highway, you won't be sorry. Well-maintained, very picturesque and clean bathrooms to bot. bordered by a quiet residential upscale neighborhood, regularly patrolled by security-- you'll be safe here. Just a gentle reminder--sharks normally come in closer to Hawaiian beaches to feed around 4:30 pm, so to be on the safe side, plan to come out of the water around that time--this is true for ALL Hawaiian beaches, and is just shark nature. You're in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Don't make yourself a food item for sharks, be aware.

I’ve grown up going to this beach and I love it! However, like the rest of the island, it’s gotten crowded. I miss it being a local beach without so many tourists. So many people don’t clean up after themselves and don’t respect the land, water, or other people. If you go, please keep plastics away from the beach. If you bring something plastic, take it with you when you leave!!

I have lived in Kailua for seven of the last 10 years, and this has consistently been my favorite stretch of the long beach facing Kailua Bay. It is less crowded than Kailua Beach Park but still offers the same excellent view, calm waters, and shade from neighboring trees. And, with the increasing number of buses bringing tourists from Waikiki to Lanikai, this remains a relatively unspoiled beach experience.

This is a nice spot; good facilities. The beach view is fab. Close to some eateries across the street. However....some unpleasant odors from the creek.

We ended up rending a house that was only 1.5 blocks away from the Kalama Beach Park. We felt so lucky to be so close to such a beautiful beach. The parking lot as mentioned by others is extremely small so it was nice that we could just walk there. I didn't really look to see what amenities were around other than noticing that there is a shower type area for people to rinse off the salt water and sand. The sand is soft and the beach is clean and the water is blue. The waves were quite rough the day we went so we didn't do any swimming as we had young kids with us; however, we did see a bunch of people boogie boarding out in the waves and it looked really fun. Great beach to visit!

We rented a vacation home one block away. The beach was a short walk and easy access. Not to much parking so get there early. Very private and not crowded. Morning walks are quiet and views are stunning. Evenings are beautiful and soothing. Love this beach. I recommend this place for sure. 👍😎
