There are those who choose to solely visit the main attractions of Waikiki and Honolulu while in Oahu, but there is no better way to experience Hawaii than surfing the North Shore.

And for beginners like myself - a real kook - Sunset Suzy's Surf Camp encapsulated everything any traveler could ever hope for. There was relaxation, adventure, cultural activities, and above all, an experience to challenge your own skills with amazing surfing instructors like Suzy that encourage you every step of the way!

In addition, the camp included:
- beach front accommodation in a beautiful home
- our camp's own personal chef that specialized in meeting everyone's dietary needs yet still made everything absolutely delicious
- surfing with the sea turtles, hula shows, hiking through the rainforest, visiting an ancient Hawaiian temple, hanging out at local hot spots, etc.
- a healthy dose of local surf stories :)
- superior surf instruction!!!

This camp gave the opportunity to surf in various spots; each one beautiful. Considering all of this, her camp is one of the most affordable camps out there. Every penny is totally worth it! Being that I used to be scared of water and only learned to swim 5 years ago, the fact that I can now say I was able to ride the waves of the North Shore is saying a lot!

Suzy actively works hard to ensure that everyone has a great time. She and her surf camp will fill you up with the aloha spirit to last you a lifetime! I highly recommend it :D

Sunset Suzy's Surf School on the North Shore of Oahu beyond exceeded my expectations. From the moment me and my three girlfirends from Toronto, Canada met Suzy, we knew that we would have an amazing time. Suzy is not only a very experienced surfing instructor, but she's also so fun, friendly and eager to make her student's vacatiion the best it can be.

The accomodations were outstanding. Suzy rented us nine girls in total a stunning beach house right across the street from the gorgeous Chun's Beach. She hired us a fantastic personal chef to come in and cook the majority of our meals. And for any meals that we did not go home for and ate on the go, Suzy would pay for it all. She truly made the week an "all inclusive" experience.

As for the surfing instruction, Suzy made sure that we always had at least two instructors in the water with us. And the instructors were all experienced, patient and so encouraging. Thanks to the instructors and Suzy, all of us were riding the waves by the very last day of the camp.

Suzy also made sure despite weather or time conditions, to stick to everything that was outlined in her itinerary (available for viewing on www.sunsetsuzy.com). We went swimming in Waimea Falls, to the Polynesian Cultural Centre for a luau and show, had hula dancing lessons and had drinks and dinner at the posh Turtle Bay Resort.

Suzy even went out of her way to hire two masseuses to come and give us each a 1 hour massage after a long, hard week of surfing! What more could you ask for?

All in all, I was so genuinely impressed by the operation of Suzy's Surf School. I would recommend this experience to girls (or women) of any age because through this surf camp, you really get to experience Hawaii in its entirety. We truly had a chance to interact with the locals, experience the local culture and most importantly, we learned how to surf. A week at Sunset Suzy's will leave you not only rejuvenated, but enpowered as well.

This was the best surf camp that I have ever been on... And I've been on quite a few! Hawaii is an amazing place to visit, end of!
Regardless of how beautiful and lovely Hawaii is the surf camp was extremely well run by Suzy - she is so, so, so thoughtful and went above and beyond to make sure you had the best time and did what you wanted to do, making arrangements for some fabulous experiences.
The surf lessons themselves were of a very high quality and we had one instructor to three people, though sometimes it seemed that we had an instructor each out there, as all the instructors were helping us out and giving us tips. I felt extremely well looked after and that someone was always watching me. Even though I could already surf - the instructors really helped/showed you how to get better.
Suzy put us up in fantastic accommodation, made sure we had transport, fed us well and planned lovely things to do in the afternoons/evenings; which enabled us to make the most out of being in Hawaii.
Everything was flexible. Suzy is very laid back, helpful, calm, thoughtful and kind woman. You cannot fail but to have a great time here. Beautiful, Amazing, Awesome, Fun, Rewarding... I will definitely be returning!
Thank you Suzy for a fantastic time surfing and for an amazing vacation!

We booked two semi-private lessons. We contacted Suzy the night before as instructed. She told me that she was "on the mainland taking care of a sick monk" - whatever that means - and that her brother Matt would be taking us out. Instructions on where to meet were vague but we decided to be laid back about it. We arrived early and texted Matt when we got there. Matt texted us right around the start time of our lesson saying he was running late but "on his way". We waited 25 more minutes (now over 30 mins late for our lesson) and finally texted him to cancel the lesson. He then responded saying he was "very sick" and trying to find someone else to provide our lesson. He then offered to give us an additional lesson at no charge to make up for it. We ultimately requested a refund and received most (not all) of it. We wasted a few hours of our Hawaiian vacation and unnecessarily secured childcare for our kids for nothing. I found Suzy and her brother to be very unprofessional and was bummed about our experience. I would recommend going somewhere else.

We feel terrible about the unfortuante timing of their lesson. My mother was very sick and I was on the mainland.. My brother was taking my lessons.. and he also was very sick that morning by something he had eaten the night before. Unfortunately we are human and do get sick and that beyond our control. We do our very best to be healthy and provide an excellent professional surf lesson for all our customers at all times. I do apologize to these people again.. and I did refund all their money. Suzy

I was looking for a surf camp for women for a week in May and came across Sunset Suzy's surf school. Sunset Suzy was the main school that responded consistently back to me and we had a couple of phone calls to finalize plans. Although she didn't have a camp organized during the week I was planning to be in Oahu, Suzy was more than happy to accommodate me as the sole camper! Not only did I get to learn to surf with her (or her instructors) one-on-one for most parts of the week, I got to do all the other activities she normally includes in her camps, and more, without having to incur additional costs!

One of the neat things I appreciated too, was that Suzy would bring in other instructors during the weekends when she had other 'day' students, and I had the benefit of learning from different people, including a pro-surfer who's done the Maverick. Everyone was nice, patient, friendly and really more than happy to teach and give tips. I was thrilled that by the end of the week, I could turn and catch a couple of waves on my own. (Disclaimer: I did learn to surf for a week last year in Mexico, but other than that had not surfed since.)

I totally recommend that you check out Sunset Suzy and her crew. She's really friendly, laid back and an awesome lady. I was initially apprehensive about being the sole camper, but it turned out to be an awesome experience. I think it helped to go with the flow and have ideas on what you want to do for the day or week. As the solo camper, things were probably not as structured as a group camp situation, but I found that being flexible and communicating my requests or questions helped put any anxiety I had to rest. Suzy and her brother Matt were always more than happy to accommodate my requests.

I would totally go back to Sunset Suzy the next time I want to progress with my surfing in Oahu.

The one thing on hindsight I wished I had been more careful was would have to be around the photos taken while I was surfing. The lady that happened to be on the beach that one day- her name is Carly- charged way too much in my opinion- $30 for a CD of pics that turned out blurry and way too small.I dont think this was Suzy's regular photographer, and I wished I had been less naive to think that anyone with a camera would necessarily take good photos. I would check out their work or at the very least, the size of their lens.

Hope this review helps with your decision making!

Thanks to Suzy and her crew for a great first time surfing! My kids ages 15 and 10 were certainly apprehensive (as were the 45 yo parents) but that went away immediately when they stood up on their first attempt! Would highly recommend. The location was perfect and they have it down to an art. We also got to see several turtles which was a bonus! Thank you Suzy and crew- happy New Years! From the Florida crew

Suzy's surf lesson was everything we wanted. Well organized, helpful, encouraging and fun! Suzy and her team of teachers are knowledgable, patient and just awesome to be around. She had the perfect selection of boards, reef shoes rashies and everything else we needed. The surf spot she chose for us to meet was perfect for learning - not too intimidating. If you're going to take surf lessons in the North Shore then you need to take them from Suzy!

We can’t say enough great things about Suzy, the instructors and the overall experience. We went with our kids (ages 9 and 12) and we had a blast. You get a brief intro and safety lesson and you’re quickly in the water. Our kids loved it and they were up surfing after two attempts. We all got to surf for a great amount of time. My wife and I tired out but the kids kept going. Suzy was great with our kids and made sure they enjoyed themselves. I highly recommend this surf school.

Suzy and her helper JC were the perfect answer to teaching my family to surf. We ranged in ages from 8 years old to 44 years old. I loved the fact that they always knew where everyone was especially my 8 year old. There were 8 of us. She made us all feel wanted and excited to try surfing. We even had to move locations because she thought we would have a better time and it was all handled with ease. I would definitely go back to her again and recommend her to whomever needs or wants to learn how to surf.

I just got back from a week surf camp with Sunset Suzy and had an incredible time - I'd definitely recommend taking lessons with Suzy's crew if you're visiting the North Shore.

Rosie was the instructor we had for the majority of the week and she was incredible. Having lived in the area her entire life, she knew everything about the beaches and the waves. Not only was she great at explaining everything, but she also was genuinely stoked when we made progress and seemed to want us to surf just as much as we did. Thanks to her, I was able to surf down the line for the first time and am still smiling about it 4 days later!

Matt, Raymond and Suzy also took us out and were brilliant too... Matt was especially good at challenging me to go for bigger waves whilst making me feel safe - fantastic! The combination of the team makes for a perfect experience and the knowledge they have of surfing, and the area, means they are well respected and well liked by everyone (including other surf schools). They can really introduce you to the community, and tons of inspiring surfers (including themselves - seeing them in action is breathtaking!).

The surf camp included yoga, hikes, tours and a bonfire on the beach - AMAZING!

Suzy and her crew made me feel like one of the family and I'm already planning my next visit where I'll have some more lessons with Sunset Suzy's team to go for some even bigger waves - Mahalo!
