Overview
One Ocean Diving is an extremely unique program and shark dive led by marine researchers trained by world renowned shark experts Ocean Ramsey & Juan Oliphant. We are the first company in the United States & Hawaii to offer freediving with sharks without a cage and we continue to maintain a perfect safety record.
Guests are taught what to do if a shark approaches them which is useful information they could use throughout the rest of their life. Guests are also taught about shark sensory systems, science, and can participate in data collection. Dives are recapped by the marine researchers who guide the dives (they are the first person in the water and the last person out and stay in the water with the guests the entire time) and conservation information is shared as well as opportunities to support and get involved. One Ocean Diving’s program is part of the One Ocean organization that does other conservation and research work around the world.

I have to be honest in this review, because I wish someone else had written this review for me to read and contemplate before booking. I wanted to love this experience so badly. In fact, this was the tour I was most excited about for my entire Hawaii trip! I splurged booking this excursion because the images and videos online look amazing, and the reviews tend to echo that as well! And while I’m glad a lot of people do enjoy this experience, unfortunately it was not what I expected. Yes I did see sharks, so the tour fulfilled its guarantee, but I felt that was all it did. Nothing was above and beyond. We went on the early morning 6am charter, and saw around 25-30 sharks- Galapagos and sandbar. I know we were lucky to see any sharks, let alone that number, but unfortunately, the sharks kept a very large distance away from us. So those photos you see of sharks near the boat- probably not gonna happen on a tourist charter. Also, not sure if it was the crew trying to distance the sharks or excite them, but the captain would often knock on the boat, causing the sharks to go even further away. The instructors do let you freedive, but only when the sharks are very far away. So while the pictures on the website are amazing, they’re all professional photos of the instructors freediving. Also I highly suggest against free diving in general if you have little experience in the ocean- it’s a very common cause of sinus infections due to water through the ears. I firsthand saw this happen, but nobody ever talks about it! Don’t let it ruin your trip. A lot of reviewers express how much information they learned, and that’s great! If the material was new to those reviewers, then I’m glad they learned something! But if you’re fairly interested in sharks, or if you’ve already searched the website or watched an interview with Ocean, then you’ll find the info shared to be very minimal. I always love hearing little tidbits and facts from specialists on tours, so I was really looking forward to hearing juicy details that might only be shared on the tour, but it's the same info you hear from any of Ocean's videos. Again, it’s great if you’re going in with zero background info! I want to be respectful of the work being done for research, but I need to be transparent as well- I almost felt like instead of this being a tour created to encourage visitors and cater to their experience, that instead we were just an inconvenience to the divers while they were trying to do their research. It kinda feels like when you’re at a new job; you know nothing and all your coworkers hate having to train you. I always felt like I was in trouble or doing the wrong thing on the boat and in the water. I was nervous to even adjust my snorkel when it was leaking because I thought I'd be reprimanded for letting go of the line for even a second. I’m sure the instructors don’t mean to come off this way, but Faith and the captain seemed very condescending when they talked about the sharks to us. There’s a difference between being an expert willing to teach, versus showing off position and superiority. I will say that Andrew was the exception that day- he was very nice, and even acted like he was trying to make up for everyone else’s poor behavior. I was really looking forward to this trip based on other reviews, but unfortunately it just didn’t live up to my expectations. After speaking with locals, I learned about another company that does cage free shark dives, and I wish I had done that other company instead- smaller groups with closer shark encounters. I think One Ocean is just more heavily advertised on google because of Ocean, herself. She’s not on the tour, by the way. I didn’t expect her to be, but just in case anyone else is expecting it. Also, don’t plan on being able to use the bathroom in the harbor- there is no toilet paper, and no doors on the stalls- just open toilets. Not the company’s fault, but come prepared!

My sister and I went out with Bryce and Drew and they could not have been more helpful or charismatic. We had an amazing time and learned so much! Out of all your diving options, you should go with One Ocean because of how they truly care for the ecosystem you are going to see! I would do it again a million times over.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this outing. Our diver was passionate, informative and extremely helpful. We learned a great deal about sharks and the ocean as a whole. We were in the water with tiger sharks, but still felt very comfortable being in their world and getting a little peek.

I went with my wife and daughter and it was an incredible experience. We felt safe the whole time with Mariah and Bryce who also had extensive knowledge of the area and the marine ecosystem. We would 100% go back again for such an incredible experience.
