I had a lot of fun with Hawaii Shark Encounters. The place is in the north shore about 45-60 mins from Waikiki beach, so you’ll need a car if you’re staying there. The check in place is on the little island part of the dock, you’ll see a small sign for them in the parking lot.

I got there 45 minutes before my schedule time because the email you get from them says you could be left if you’re not there 30 mins before your scheduled time. This is FALSE. I was the first person waiting there on the dock and there was no boat and no one waiting to check me in until the boat returned about 15 mins before my scheduled time. Even then, we waited till our exact scheduled time to board the ship and a couple even called a few mins late to say they were lost and the captain waited and guided them to the boat over the phone.

The boat ride to the cage starts off calm and gets choppier as you get closer. By the time you get to the cage, the boat is really rocking. You go into the cage 5 people at a time for about 20-25 mins per group, there was just 2 groups.

I was in the first group, seeing the sharks up close was amazing. They swim all around and under the cage. They do get pretty close. With the waters being choppy, you really have to hold onto the handles of the cage to avoid slamming into the cage and into other people. Even with my tight grip, I did bump into other people and some did slam into me.

Once we got out and back into the boat, many of the other passengers appeared to be sea sick. And once it was their turn to go in and our turn to wait, I found out why. The boat ROCKED. I ended up mildly sea sick as well despite my best effort to stare at the horizon.

While waiting on the boat the 2 crew members do their best answering questions and give you lots of interesting information on sharks. They were both very knowledgeable and professional. They also wore masks the entire time on the trip, if that matters to you.

Overall, it was a great experience and am happy I got to experience it. My only recommendation is to take Dramamine and ginger chews before you go.

We had a fantastic trip. There were huge waves but the boat was fine and it was calmer out past the breakers. First we saw a whale jump and the pod swim by then we got to the cage area. There were 20 or more Galapagos sharks! Easy entry to the tank and amazing views through the plexiglass. Crew was great, photos and videos amazing and the experience was priceless

The boat crew was super friendly and informative. They educated us about the sharks and helped us realize how very important and necessary they are to our existence. The cage dive was amazing! We saw so many Galapagos sharks up close and personal - some pretty big ones too! This attraction was 100% worth the money we spent, and I wholeheartedly recommend you take the dive!

The afternoon seas were choppy! You need to take the trip in the am. Two people threw up on our trip. We did get to see a whale as a bonus on our shark trip. Other vacationers were waiting for a whale watching tour and we got to see a whale and sharks! Also I would recommend you ask the crew to let you get it he cage with your party alone even thought it may mean 5 less minutes. We were out in the cage with 7 people. I saw more ass than sharks. Along with the bouncing around it was not pleasant. Instead of two groups splitting 45 mins, they should of let us done 3 groups at 15 each. I was in a party of 3 but the other 4 people were just in the way. My group all agreed you only have to do this once. It wasn’t an amazing experience, especially at $100+ a person.
Thus:
Go early am on a light stomach.
Try to limit 3-4 people in cage.
Bring a go pro to take video
Keep all hands and feet inside the cage. :)

Tell all your family and friends you went swimming with sharks!

Went at 7am a few days ago, was a smooth ride to the open ocean, where we saw a few sharks. It felt very safe on the boat and in the cage. Simple instructions to get into the cage, highly recommend for those who love snorkeling. Went with family member who is a senior citizen.

I'd also add that there were mosquitos in the bathroom; I got bitten more times by mosquitos than by sharks, which is how it should be.

We were quite disappointed by our tour and the company that runs it. There were several reasons:

* timeliness. we were told the boat will leave promptly and so to be ready to go at least 20 mins early. the boat ended up leaving 15 mins after the scheduled time because we were waiting for stragglers. we wasted a lot of time planning to be there early for little reason.
* the cage itself. we were told it would be covered in plastic and so there would be a separation between you and the sharks. most of the cage, though, is not covered in this. it was a very rough day on the water and my legs kept slipping out of the cage. not a good way to learn that the tour operators oversold something :/.
* lack of basic necessities onboard. we became dehydrated. while we brought a good amount of water, we actually ran out. the tour operators had no potable water. i couldnt believe it.
* again, the ocean was rough that day, and they actually asked one of the guests to steer the boat while they were busy moving the cage. this was extremely unprofessional and i wonder if it's even allowed under their insurance.
* the worst part was that when we complained about these things to the company, they responded in a very condescending email and took no responsibility for these issues.

I hope I've convinced you that this is a badly managed tour company which overpromises and doesn't take your safety seriously. You should find another group that is better run to bring you out there. We are surprised by this company's reviews; one can only suspect they have paid to have their rating inflated.

They were amazing! They were encouraging, knowledgeable, entertaining and overall they love and care about sharks. Their main concern was for us to have a safe experience but also to gain love and appreciation for sharks. We would definitely go with this company again and encourage you to choose them. No regrets

Was 2nd group of 7 people to go into the shark cage. The 1st group did see 3 or 4 sharks, when we went in there was none to see. The reason the guide said was that there was probably a tiger shark in the area. True or not, it sucks to not see any sharks. I would give one star but the main guy talking to us was nice. blond long hair, forgot his name. The trip is booked 7-9, trip is less than that and time in water is 20 mins.

Aloha Tyler, We at Hawaii Shark Encounters do have a 100% guarantee for shark sightings. If we ever have tours where the shark numbers are low or they are leaving for extended periods of time our crew is trained to do everything in their power to make sure we get them back. If we notice this happening we make sure to ask guests if the sharks are still around down deep or if they are seeing anything. Upon speaking to the crew the day of your charter they said that the 3-4 sharks stayed the whole time and no one on board said they didn't see anything. Unfortunately we are unable to guarantee the number of sharks that show up, or where the sharks swim in the area as they are wild animals who are just preconditioned to come to the sound of boats. As a good will gesture we would like to extend 20% off your next dive with reference to this review. We hope to be able to give you the 5 star experience our guests receive and deserve. Mahalo.

Overall the experience was amazing. The guides were very nice, but for a private charter the experience was very short. We left at 10:15am and got out to the cage at 10:30am we left around 11:15 and we’re back by 11:30am. It was a two-hour charter and we really only had 30-40 mins in the cage. We had a great time but somewhat disappointing that we really only had a 30-40 min experience with the sharks.

I talked my wife into doing the Shark-Cage dive with me and she hasn’t stopped talking about how great it was!
We loved, loved, loved it!!
The guys on the boat (Kailani) were awesome!
They were full of interesting information and just a couple of nice guys.
We were picked up out the front of our hotel in Waikiki and it was about an hour or so drive to get to the boat on the north shore.
The cage was 3 miles offshore and as soon as we turned up, there were sharks swimming around the boat. Because of recent bad weather, they hadn’t been out there for the past 3 weeks, so Miles seemed to think that the sharks were probably wondering where they had gone and they had all turned up to take a look 👀
There were approximately a dozen sharks continually swimming around the cage for about an hour, as if for your personal viewing pleasure.
They were all around 2 1/2 metre long Galapagos sharks (and one barracuda with a buck tooth lol)
An unbelievable experience that neither my wife or myself will ever forget!
GO AND DO IT!! You’ll be thanking me for it after you do 😁

P.S make sure that you take some sea sickness tablets before going out if you think you might be affected by all the rocking and swaying 👍
