One teenager (17) and a pre-teen (11) recently took their first surf lesson with Noho from Button Surf School. One of them was my daughter and her feedback was that it was the highlight of her trip! I was a bit worried, the other girl in our group was not a strong swimmer and there had been a storm the night before with high surf and wind. Conditions were not ideal (it was still a bit windy and raining) but Noho took us to a beach where the waves were not so strong. We, the parents, were put at ease by Noho's obvious knowledge of the area. The lesson started out on land. Noho went through the steps to get up on the board and safety rules. Each girl got a rash guard to wear which is fortunate because even then, their novice bodies were not use to lying on the surf board and they had some rash afterward. Noho brought two rather large and heavy boards for the girls for added stability and a smaller, more nimble one for himself. After the 15-20 minute on land portion they were in the water! The location they were at was great cos us parents could walk out to an inlet and see them pretty up close while they were in the water. The girls managed to paddle themselves out to the spot that Noho picked. Then, one at a time, Noho waited for a good wave, instructed the girls to start paddling, gave them a push start and off they went. Both girls were able to stand up on their first try! Both were able to ride the wave for 20-30 feet! It was uplifting to just watch and they were thrilled! They were out on the water for about 1-1.5 hours. At times the girls got tired while trying to paddle back out. When Noho saw that he'd sometimes quickly paddle over and tow the girls out with his toes! Quite a sight to see, there are no handles to latch on to on the board, just his really strong toes gripping the tip of the board! Girls got to relax and enjoy the ride! At one point the 11 year old flipped her board and when Noho saw that he was ready to paddle over and help her. She managed to flip it back but good to see that he basically had his eyes on both girls at all times and was keeping them safe. When they returned you could see the obvious delight in both girls' eyes. They were literally shimmering! Great time, safe environment and well worth the money. So glad we were able to do this! Would highly recommend!

My 3 teens first surfing lesson and they loved it. It was the highlight of our vacation. I was a little worry for my 15 year old who's not a very strong swimmer and she almost changed her mind when she got to the beach and saw the waves but the instructors were very patient and assured her they'll be right there with her and she will be safe at all time. We meet at Jamie's and followed the instructor to Chung's Reef where the other instructor was already waiting with the surf boards laid out for their land lessons. It was a group lesson and there were a total of 8 in our group with 2 instructors. The beach was busy with other surf school but not over crowded like lessons at Waikiki. All my teens snowboards so it was easy for they pick up. After about 40min of land lesson they were taken out 4 in a group by the instructor for their first surf. Like promised the instructor was with my kids at all time and they feel safe. They have the most memorable time and I will definitely take them back. Buttons also had an amazing photographer who took some great photos for us. About 5min west of Chung's Reef is Turtle beach. Stop by there to see all the sun tanning sea turtles.

My son's main have to while in Hawaii was to Surf. The buttons instructor was amazingly patient and had my son up riding a wave first try. I was even able to enjoy a ride myself and I didn't think there was any way I would get close. It was definitely one of the most enjoyable adventures we had during our week stay. Highly recommend for the novice and its an experience you'll treasure forever.

I bought surfing lessons from Buttons Surf School for my 14 year old son while we were in Haleiwa Hawaii. His surfing instructor was extremely kind and did everything possible to get my son into a wave and surfing. After a couple lessons my son was actually walking up and down the board as he surfed! The friendliest place around for sure. I can't wait to get lessons from Buttons Surf School for my other boys when we go back later this year!

So grateful for the fabulous time this crew showed us. In addition to the wonderful instruction and great time, I appreciated the concern for the safety of everyone under their instruction. We also got to see turtles (at no additional cost :-)).
