Really pretty beach. I happened by while a pro surf competition was going on, and enjoyed watching the little stick figures in the distance as they zoomed down big waves. I repeat, BIG waves. I wouldn't swim or surf here without knowing the local waters well.
Also caught a sunset here - I can see how it got its name!

Beautiful place for watching the sunset and surfers. NOT a place to really get in the water unless you are surfing - maybe it is calmer in the summer. The sand here will have you sinking a bit as you walk around, so get ready for some exercise if you plan on doing that. Parking is along the road in most access places, I am not sure if we missed an actual parking lot, but plan ahead for spotty parking.
We got dinner after this nearby at Seven Brothers Burgers, but it would have been extra nice to have takeout on the beach itself during the sunset.

We visited Sunset Beach during our Circle Island Tour with Oahu Nature Tours.
This is a beautiful wide sandy beach with great surfing waves. This is also the site of some world famous surfing competetions.

This beach is the opposite of Waikiki, which I also enjoyed. But if you are looking for untouched quiet non-commercial, then make the trek up to the North Shore. I'll let my photos speak for themselves about the beauty. Also nice, public parking and public bathrooms too.

If you are looking for a sandy beach where you can see one of the triple crowns of surfing contests in the winter months and beautiful sunsets, be sure to stop at Sunset Beach near the Banzai Pipeline. During the winter months, swells can be up to 30 feet. This beach is considered “one of the best of Oahu” and is worth your time to drive to the north shore. It has a wide sandy beach that is a great place to enjoy its calmness during the summer months.

It’s in the name, this is the place to watch the sunset on O’ahu. There is plenty of powdery soft sand for the largest of crowds to sprawl out on and not encroach on one another. The waves crashing and palm tree scattered around made it the most picturesque location, not to mention the free entertainment provided by the surfers. Only negative about this location is the slope of the beach, it can be difficult to walk around for those less able-bodied.

The Sunset Beach is fabulous, but the picnic area on the other side of the road is another story.
My backpack was snatched from next to me while me and my wife sat and ate at a table in the picnic area (Wednesday, 4pm, 16. January, 2013).
A young guy on an off-road bike came from behind, snatched the backpack, rode off and disappeared into one of the side streets.
Friendly neighbours and police searched the area, but without any results. The vendors there who saw the incident were not too helpful.
Apparently there is a local gang that targets tourists and has members staked out in the area to identify potential victims.
The sunset helped to bring down the distress a notch after this audacious incident.

This was our End destination after renting a car to drive the windward side of the island. We loved watching the surfers and the waves are HUGE!! Well worth the 1 hour drive from Honolulu. We even cut down our travel time back from Sunset beach by taking the Pali Highway. It can be tricky to find parking, but we staked out a spot after a couple of minutes (Lucky)! The sand and surf are something else and definitely not as congested as Waikiki. Nice break after a beautiful drive!

Beautiful beach without all the crowds. Great waves to play in! While we were there, there was a wave surge that brought out a lot more surfers. So much fun to watch all those surfers out there!

We saw temporary camps hidden in the bushes at Waimea Bay but they looked a bit ugly.

What happens when there are surfing championships, do you pay to watch? and what about parking your car?

Parking is at a premium so snag a spot wherever you can. Admission was free the day we were there but perhaps it depends on the event.

is it possible to get there by bus?
Maria H
St. Petersburg, FL159 contributions
Yes you can. Depending on your starting point, you would take the 57A Bus (Alakea St + S Hotel St) to the 70 Bus (Kailua Rd + Hamakua Dr) down a bit and get off at Molulua Dr + Opp Kaelepulu Dr. The time (depending on any delays and traffic) is about an hour. At least there's beautiful scenery the entire way! 👍🏻

Does this beach close at night? If we wanted to watch the sunset and stay here at night to hang out (nothing nefarious lol), would we get kicked out?
David W

No, the beach does not close. Its not fenced off in anyway. Not sure if the parking area on the other side of the road closes. If it did you could probably move your car to the road before it gets closed.
