We went with a tour so I would advise planning ahead and calling to schedule a look at the small facility which is on private property. There were several Nene's in the pond area. This is the endangered bird of Hawaii.

Man, we really wanted to see some nenes so we drove back and forth for half an hour or so before giving up!! It's really bizarre: the map we consulted listed a specific milepost on the highway so we figured it'd be easy to find. Had to give up.

The official tourist maps have this on the south shore. We never could find it. But while driving to the north shore toward Halawa, we saw the signs. We were up in the hills. Never saw the Nene though. We spent nearly an hour looking for the Nene on the south shore like the official tourist maps said :( Spend... More
