Due to heavy rains that did considerable damage, the road and park are closed to all but local residents of the valley. There is a MPD officer at the junction 24/7 to prevent non-residents from entering. I talked to the officer on duty and he was saying at least another 2 months. This was on 10/23.

We ended up coming here after doing "the other road" past Kapalua. Iao Valley is most impressive. It was raining like crazy the day we were there but it was gorgeous and ethereal. One of the highlights of our trip, just so much natural beauty to take in. Lots of stairs but the walking is not terribly strenuous, just slippery... More

Requires climbing some steps and reading some plaques. Beautiful scenery and nature. Make it a part of a larger tour, not just the sole target of the day

Easy trip from Wailea, this nature reserve type venue show the beauty of a rainforest. Short easy hike from the parking lot over mountain stream and gardens, a sacred spot from ancient Hawaiian royal times. Doesn't require a lot of time to visit and is worth the memories.

Awesome easy hike, scratch that, more of a leisurely stroll around a paved road/130 steps with views to majestic lush mountains including the Iao needle. According to the legend, Iao's lover was turned into this 1,200 feet high mountain because her father Maui did not approve of him. This was also the site of a battle between King Kamehameha in... At first, we couldn't find the state monument and ended up at a dead end in the middle of the forest. Eventually got there and the Ioa Needle, a 1200 foot tall spike of lava that is vaguely phallic and a traditional place of worship, was somewhat ho hum. We wouldn't go back.

I have tried to visit the Iao Valley the last 3 times I have visited Maui. Its always closed because of flash floods. Before you drive over there be sure its open.

Just returned from Maui, Sept. 2016 and the valley was destroyed by the rains, and slides and will take over a yr or more to be restored or been seen on tours. Such a beautiful place...

Sorry to here the park closed after our visit. We combined this visit with a trip to Hakeakala National Park before reboarding our cruise ship. The parking lot was full but we waited in line for about 5 minutes before being let in. When one car comes out, they let the next one in. You can park on the side... More

We went to Iao State Park all ready for a nice hike only to find that it actually is a nice stroll. But, the grounds are very beautiful and definitely worth visiting. We didn't jump over barriers to find other trails cuz just hate to break the rules:)
