About
Set in the gentle hillsides of "Up-Country" Maui, Pukalani Country Club overlooks the Pacific Ocean and offers breath-taking panoranic views of the Valley Isle of Maui. The Pukalani Country Club is nestled at the 1,100 foot elevation level of world famous Mount Haleakala, an extinct volcano whose name in Hawaiian means "House of the Rising Sun" and is appropriately reflected as the golf course's logo. Pukalani's 18 holes were designed by golf course architect Bob Baldock who designed more than 69 public and private golf courses throughout the United States. The Pukalani Country Club's greenery covers nearly 160 acres. Built in 1980, the course is 6,962 yards long from the championship tees, plays to a par 72, and features 19 greens in its 18-hole layout! On hole #3, golfers may choose a tough iron shot across a ravine and into the wind for one green, or a challenging chip shot straight down to a well-trapped green several hundred feet below into the ravine. No other golf course in Hawaii can compare or offer you this unique setting and challenge of our hole #3. "Pukalani" which in Hawaiian means "Entrance to Heaven" certainly describes Pukalani Country Club!

I am a part-time resident of Maui who organizes golf on island. One of our favorite courses is Pukalani. The rates are great, the course is one of the most picturesque in the area, and we try and play at least once, sometimes twice a month when we are here. We always get a large group playing, and they keep coming back. The staff is fantastic - very obliging, responsive and wonderful people to work with. Organizing large groups, we sometimes have last minute changes - they always, always accommodate us. We look forward to many more years of fun golf at Pukalani Country Club.

The course is well maintained, challenging yet playable with great views, and by far the most affordable golf on Maui with the Aloha Pass they offer. Staff are all friendly and helpful. My wife and I played more than 20 morning rounds in February and March 2023 and only a couple of rounds were more than 4 hours. I can't recommend it highly enough.

We have been traveling to Hawaii for many years and stay in the Kaanapali area. So traveling to the Pukalani Country Club takes longer than playing at one of the more local golf sites. But, you can’t beat this golf club! Local and low key. For pricing, a gorgeously maintained course, amazing views, cool climate and friendly staff!!

We usually get a delicious quick lunch at their casual cafe before playing a one o’clock tee time when pricing is incredibly reasonable with cart. After a great 18 holes, we take advantage of being upcountry by having dinner at one of our two favorite restaurants, Kula Bistro or Haliimaile General Store.

Avoid, avoid, avoid. The people running the show clearly don’t want visitors playing at “their club”. Reading previous reviews , both on TA and elsewhere, my experience is very similar to many. I doubt my comments will be seen as constructive criticism to improve service as I suspect they aren’t interested in improving service for those pesky visitors.
We arrived to play a family round of golf in the afternoon, a group of keen and not so keen golfers. When we eventually worked out where the pro shop was, the greeting was unwelcoming, hostile and it felt like they were annoyed by the inconvenience of visitors. We were kinda chastised for being early ( but not knowing the process to be followed we deliberately arrived early) . We were a group of 4 and had booked and paid for 4 tee-times. Initially we were told there were 2 other visitors who would also join our group. ( creating a group of 6). When I pointed out that we had booked and paid for tee-times for 4 people they apparently changed their mind, but we still had 2 other people right behind us teeing off, who were unsure of their tee-time.
The general demeanour was grumpy and unhelpful. No information was offered (like where to collect hire clubs) , and questions were met with exasperation,. One staff member in the cart area was friendly and helpful, but he was the exception. A very poor experience for international visitors, that reflects badly on this club.

Playing for the last several months, I will say that I enjoy the course and views. The bunkers are not sand but dirt and when wet are like hitting off of wet concrete. Used to be able to put out of many the bunkers but now they are putting a large lip at the top to prevent this.

My poor rating is because of the lack of customer service, there are a few employees that provide excellent service but most of the starters do not.

One big observation is the Pukalani Country Club is a club for the employees only and customers come in a distant second. The employees and friends play at prime tee times and gamble with their friends. Several five-some groups go out and play extremely slow. If you have four empty holes in front of you and four to five groups waiting behind you are playing too slow. They have to measure the putts and settle bets on every green taking their time. Often with several groups waiting behind them. Of course the employees follow golf etiquette (sarcasm) they never allow anyone to play through. They also drive carts over tee boxes, drive between the green side bunkers and the green which is actually driving partially on the green, but they have been known to drive carts directly across the greens. Employees do not fix ball marks or divots while playing.

The manager Ron does not address any of these problems. This is probably why the problems persist. Ron will deflect the issues with promises to look into them but never resolves any problem.

Sadly I will play other courses where I am teated like a valued customer.

Aloha, Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Pukalani Country Club. 739Oliv, we are concerned about your review, but it appears you have a personal purpose directed at Ron for some reason. We hope you continue to play at Pukalani Country Club and you may set your personal differences aside and enjoy the beautiful golf course we have been blessed with. Ron's door is always open and would like to discuss your personal challenges in an effort to create a better golfing experience for all. As most may read, this is an isolated experience and not a golfer that enjoys the conditions at Pukalani Country Club. Our ratings have proved to be excellent over the past 8 years with stellar reviews. Again, thank you for your time and please come see me at your earliest convenience. Mahalo,

We went on a Thursday for the all day special rate of $69 per person. The course is long and has beautiful vistas of the Maui valley. The front nine was in better shape than the back nine on the day we played the course. Overall worth a stop for something different and significantly less expensive than the Maui resort golf courses.

We arrive early for breakfast which was good; served on a patio of the main building (which is a large manufactured housing building).

We chose this course because of the much lower greens fees. We were not disappointed!! The course was in excellent shape and had a great layout. The more expensive courses don’t seem worth the money when you can play here and pay half the price. Beautiful views on every hole. And the pro shop staff went above and beyond (shoutout to Tassie who held onto a bag of golf supplies I accidentally left and had to come back for the next day)!

I played Pukalani Country Club in March of 2022. The green fees can't be beat anywhere in Hawaii. It really is a very good value. The greens were in great shape as well as the fairways. However, the bunkers didn't have sand in them. They just had red Maui dirt in them. I don't know if this was by design, but you can not hit out of these bunkers like a traditional sand trap. Your wedge simply bounces right off the hard dirt when you try to hit behind the ball. The day I played, there was a 3 or 4 club wind blowing the entire round. This made the course extremely challenging to say the least.

Aloha Kbj01, Mahalo for your kind words concerning the greens and fairways. I am pleased to share with you there is new sand in the bunkers. This provides a great total golf experience. We hope to see you back sooner than later. Mahalo,

I found this course years ago and it has become my Maui home course. It reminds me of the course our club plays at in Lemont, IL. The course is in great shape . It's a tough par 70 course. The tight fairways and interesting greens makes for a formidable experience. The people there make the experience great. I especially like Tassie who checks you in and Jack and Steve the starters on alternate days. If your here for more than a month you may want to invest in their 30 day players pass. It's a great bargain! I highly recommend it and you will do yourself a disservice if you don't try it once on your time on Maui.

Great course and very well kept. Rivals some of the most expensive courses on the island with their A+ maintenance and course care. Course rewards you when you hit it straight and challenges you if you're struggling to keep it in the fairway. Bermuda greens are very well kept. I've played a lot of the most expensive courses on this island and this is by far the best deal. For price, course quality and layout, it's the best deal on the island.

Aloha, Mahalo for taking the time to write such a kind review of Pukalani Country Club. The golf course is very friendly but may be challenging should your ball go astray. Over the past five years the golf course's condition has improved dramatically. We hope to see you sooner than later at Pukalani Country Club.
