About
Hale Pa‘ahao (stuck-in-irons house) was Lahaina’s “new” prison in the 1850s. During the peak of the whaling era, as you can imagine, the small village of Lahaina was rampant with rowdy sailors who were ready for fun and relaxation along with villagers who were willing to play and trade with them. FREE 20-minute parking available in front of the Gatehouse Entrance.

If you head south on Honoapiilani towards the Front St area and turn on Prison St, you'll see the Old Lahaina Prison. It is a little freebiee self tour of how people doing bad things were incarcerated in the whaling days. Free admission and street parking. A nice respite from shopping & eating.

Spent the day in this lovely town, the Capital of Maui, and to while the time away before our booked whale watching trip, took a look around the town and found this most interesting place tucked away, a short walk front the towns main thoroughfare, Front St.
Not a big site, but a lot of history attached to it, from the time this was a whale hunting town. Been lovingly restored, and as my pix show, quite a bit of info relating to its history. A Should visit when in town

We had read about this on Trip Advisor. Having been to Lahaina many times we were looking for something different. This was easy walking from the pier, easy to find and different! Very quaint, small area but interesting to see the cubicles they had to live in and the very large yard outside. The rock wall around the prison was interesting. Only need 20-30 minutes but worth it.

I always enjoy historic buildings/museums in the cities that we visit... this was an interesting stop along our walk of historic Lahaina. Well maintained and a short walk from Front St.

A short walk off the main street onto Prison Street, self guided and donations accepted, great old artifacts and plaques explaining the history surrounding this old prison, cool to go check out.

Old jail with lots of interesting facts about how people were arrested and what for. There was a guy helping the restoration who was chatty and helpful and we spent just a few mins there and it was interesting. Just off one of the main streets and free.

The old prison is worth a visit while in Lahaina. Not far from the main street, the prison has been well restored to show the history of its use during the 1800s whaling days when control was required for 1000s of sailors visiting the area.

I thought this historical site was very interesting. As said in other reviews, there were no guides when we visited, and actually, no one was monitoring the site. It is free, and you just walk in to the gates and look around on your own. The interesting part is the actual jail house itself inside the walls. You are able to view in to one of the cells that inmates were housed in, and there is an audio of a "prisoner" talking about why he was being incarcerated, etc., along with a mannequin of a prisoner sitting on his bed, and the furniture, etc. that was typically inside the cell during the 1800's. Another room had a list of stats of how many people were arrested in Lahaina during certain years in the 1800's and what type of "crime" would warrant a person being arrested, along with what the punishment would be for a particular crime. It was VERY interesting. Moral standards were, of course, much higher in the 1800's and early 1900's, compared to now. The site doesn't have a bunch of bells and whistles, but is still historically relevant and well worth the visit. There were also non-related historical items at the entrance to the gate, like a 1923 Model-T Ford Touring Car.
