About 808 Boards
808 Boards incorporated was born in a Napili garage in early 2010. Our goals have always been to provide the best customer service with the best equipment and pricing. Over a decade later, we have the best surf shop on Maui’s west side. We rent, consign, and sell new and used surfboards, stand-up paddle boards, skim boards, and all accessories. We offer lessons and tours and still have west side delivery for rentals.

There are so many activity companies, surf shops and board rental companies on Maui that it can feel like a full-time job to pick the right one. Let me save you the time- 808 Boards goes above and beyond for their customers, their products are top of the line with the best prices on island, and they are a close knit, family-run business (and it shows!). We love 808 Boards and can’t wait to get back in the Maui water!

If you come to Hawaii on vacation you just might wind up surfing the best waves of your life on a rented surfboard instead of your magic board from home. If that turns out to be the case on Maui then make sure you get your board rental and any other surf supplies you left at home from 808 Boards! Yes, these guys have great equipment instead of the old beaters that most shops will rent you. And, their prices are fair. But most importantly they are stoked surfers themselves and embody the Aloha spirit. They understand that the waves can get really big here and there is always the chance that through no fault of you own, their boards may still take a bit of a beating. But instead of seeing that as a “money making opportunity” these guys are completely understanding and reasonable about the damage costs. To pay that kindness back, just treat their boards with the same care you treat you own. That and being giving in the water instead of grabbing for every wave will result in a ton of authentic Aloha coming right back ya!

My wife and I wanted to take surfing lessons and these guys were on our radar before we even left the mainland. Our condo ended up being steps from their shop. We dropped in and had a great conversation with the guy running the place (Lucio is his name, I think). He bent over backwards to help us figure out when to book our lesson - it was unusually windy the entire week we were there and that was an unexpected issue. Between that and guiding us toward the semi-private lesson (just us two plus the instructor) it's pretty clear they really wanted us to have an enjoyable experience. As for the lesson itself, we met Andy at the shop on the appointed day and followed him down the coast to a beach near Lahaina where the waves are apparently pretty predictable, and especially suitable for beginners. The conditions were near perfect, and we had the place pretty much to ourselves (scheduling triumph on both counts - weekends can get pretty crazy but we ended up picking the calmest weekday). The dry land lesson consisted of an introduction to basic water safety, wave set behavior, paddling, board maneuvering, how to stand up, how to balance, and where to look - more important than you realize at first! Andy's big on repetition, so the basic need-to-know stuff definitely stuck. We practiced a few drills to get the feel for it, then headed to the water. Wow there's lots of paddling! Once we were in position Andy reviewed the process with us again. Then we took turns riding, with Andy picking a good wave and sending us off, shouting cues at the key moments. Both of us stood up successfully several times, and we each had at least one good, long ride. In the end, it was the paddling that determined when it was time to knock off - all the rest of it was *much* less strenuous. It's definitely a full body workout, though. We got the boards back in Andy's truck and stood around chatting for awhile before parting company. Later on, when we were back at the shop picking up some water and snacks (as we did every day we were there - it's a decently-stocked convenience store, too), Lucio mentioned Andy said when he dropped off the boards that he thought we'd had a pretty good day. It was a nice follow-up to a great time. We're definitely going back next trip.

We bought a skim board for my 11 year old son while on vacation. They warned us about the rocks and to be careful not to get it chipped. Within 2 days he got a chip. We took it in and they had us fixed up in no time and no charge. This is what high quality service feels like. They definitely have the aloha spirit.
