Barry was an excellent instructor who was very helpful and understanding. He was very intelligent and had a thorough understanding of the art of diving. He was very assuring and comforting and was respectful to the needs of the group. Barry remained patient throughout the training and diving sessions. With his knowledge of scuba diving Barry was able to gift me with this amazing experience and now I’m able to share this experience with my peers. I had to get certified in a short amount of time due to a busy schedule but he made sure I had everything that I needed. I could not have asked for a more skilled, caring, and providing instructor and I am very grateful for all that Barry has done for me. With him scuba was a blast, and I highly recommend using him to teach you this experience!

I took my wife out with Scuba Mike for her very first dive. He was very thorough in his instruction and was quite knowledgeable without getting too far into the weeds with stuff she didn't need to worry about for an intro dive. I would highly recommend Scuba Mike for anyone wanting to get their fins wet for the first time.

I dove with Mike yesterday and I could not have had a better experience. Not one bad thing to say about this guy!! As a first time diver I was somewhat nervous. Mike was so thorough and made me feel safe from the time I got there until the time I left. He’s extremely friendly and told us great stories the entire time. He’s full of tips and tricks and is a very knowledgeable diver. He made sure to check on us a lot underwater and point out some great things while we were below the surface. I will definitely dive with Mike again and I’d recommend him to anyone!!

First dive in a long time, Mike was excellent, fabulous shore dive with plenty to see, White Tip, Spotted Eel etc.

Really interesting guy, casual but professional.

Highly recommend!

I called and talked to scuba mike and told him I would like to dive with him. He said, "Great". I told him that I would be coming in on a cruise ship. He said that he was right down from the ship.
I ask if he could pick me up since we where doing a beach dive at a park some miles away. He said no, that I could take a taxi (it was expensive)..this should have been my first warning.
He then talked me into a dive with scoters for an extra cost......saying you could see me, and could earn a certification on them too, and would have the cert ready after the dive. I said sounds Great...but more to come on that.
I arrived at the beach dive 45 minutes before the arranged time. He was 1 hour late. I kept calling and he only answered 10 before he arrived. Next, he went on about how much better of a guide than the other companies and how he does all these actives for 20 minutes. Not as he was getting the equipment out.
Finally, he started getting the equipment out of his van. He said I couldn't take pictures because he didn't want the camera that was attached to me to get caught up in the propeller of the scooter. I had this brand new camera I bought for this trip and couldn't use it.
On the first dive everything was going great. We hit several dive sites and saw lots of marine life......But NO pictures. Then it went all sound. His scooter for me stop working out in the ocean. The first dive was cut short....my attitude was not a problem.
On second dive he rode his scooter while I hung on to him, because he couldn't get mine to work and didn't bring a back up. Not very fun trying to hang on with one hand.
After the 2nd dive, he went on about how lucky I was to dive with him and he was the only one on the island that used scooters. I asked if he was going to charge me half price for the scooter part since it broke down at the end of first dive? He said no, that I got to ride one. I wasn't happy about this. I asked him for my scooter cert. and he said he didn't do it.
I paid for 2 dives with scooters and a cert.for the scooters. That isn't what I got. He said he would mail the cert...which I never got.
Injury to insult...... I asked if he was going back to town where the cruise ship was and he said, yes. I asked if he could give me a ride back...and he said he didn't have room for me in the van....which he did. So, I had to call a taxi to come pick me up and take me back......I paid for a taxi both ways when he could have given me a ride. I would have even have paid him for transfers...but he was to busy to leave.
I have been diving since I was 10 years old starting in 1981. I have dove all over the world with many operators, including live a boards. This was the worst diving experience I have had today. The best was Tulsa Diving in Cairns AUS.
What to take from this review, "Try him at your own risk, you may have better luck".

Scuba Mike does not have enough patience to teach anyone how to scuba. I admit, I'm not the best student. However, the experience of Mike dragging me out of the ocean on my back is not something I will soon forget. I believe that if Mike had a little patience, my first scuba experience would have been much more enjoyable. Despite my awful first experience with Mike, I tried another company and was successful!

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience. It is unfortunate you had a less than stellar dive on your first scuba, but glad that you did find the opportunity to take another chance at it, I think that says a lot for you to stick to it. Mike takes the time and puts special attention to carefully train novice divers who come to Maui and try scuba for the first time. He is a dedicated waterman and takes his duties seriously, going above and beyond to help guests feel as comfortable as possible. We are sorry to hear about your experience but rest assured customer service and safety is a top priority with us and we learn and grow from every experience. We would be honored to give you another dive lesson if you would give us another try, however this time we suggest a private lesson so you can get more attention and instruction. Mahalo!

We booked a dive with "Scuba Mike" and clearly told him that one of us had dove before and the other had never been scuba diving. He said that was great and he could accommodate both of us on the dive and teach me how to scuba dive since I had not done it before.

We arrived right on time and we did not get into the water for about an hour due to Mike talking about everything except for scuba diving... and more importantly no discussion about Scuba Safety or protocol. He briefly went over a few specs about the equipment and then want on to say... "IT'S ALL GOOD... YOU'LL FIGURE IT OUT UNDER THE WATER."

Needless to say, my experience scuba diving with "Scuba Mike" was nothing short of terrible. I even had to go to urgent care afterward because he didn't teach me how to depressurize my ears.

I am sure there are definitely better companies and better people to scuba dive with in Maui.

My wife and I went on 4 dives, 2 of them scooter dives with Barry. It was our first open Ocean dive and we had a blast. The first 2 dives were close to Lahaina and we were able to see turtles, rays, reefs, and plenty of fish. One of the dives here was a scooter dive and we got to see so much more using these.
The other 2 dives were at Turtle Town area. We were able to scooter and see a white tip Shark and a reef about 1 mile off shore. Barry is one of the few that know where this reef is located and is willing to take divers there. There were eels and massive schools of fish. The last dive was without the scooter and we were able to check out some Lava Tubes and various tunnels. We saw various types of eels, plenty of turtles, puffer fish, and another Shark.
Barry is able to take pictures for purchase after the dive which is great for memories. I would definitely recommend using Scuba Mike for any dive and if possible ask for Barry.

Had a great experience with Barry. Although I am PADI certified, it was my first open water dive in the ocean (and my certification/refresher course was some time ago). I got lucky. Barry was my personal dive instructor (the other party cancelled). He made me feel super comfortable...but also pushed me out of my comfort zone (in a totally good way).we used a scooter on the 2nd dive. It took a bit to get used but totally got the hang of it and made for a great dive (covered more ground and didn't have to exert so much energy...currents were strong). I would totally recommend Scuba Mike's...and especially my guide/instructor Barry🤙
