My family booked a 7- 10 a.m. South Makena Kayak and Snorkel tour on Sat., July 3rd from Hawaiian Paddle Sports and drove 1 hr. from Lahaina to Makena Landing for the tour, only to be told when we arrived that the tour was cancelled due to strong South winds. Then, as we drove around we saw a HPS tour guide giving instructions to 10 people who were obviously about to depart on a kayak /snorkel tour. We stopped to ask him why his tour was able to depart, but our tour was cancelled. He admitted that they didn't have a staff member for our tour. Needless to say, we were very disappointed and would not recommend this tour company, even though we did get a full refund. We ended up driving to Wailea Beach a few minutes north of Makena landing and rented a kayak from a small local business on the beach for $45/hr. and had a great time snorkeling and kayaking on our own. We saw several turtles and the ocean at Wailea Beach was a very comfortable temperature in early July which was the best part. I would recommend renting your own kayak from Wailea Beach so you can take your time and explore the ocean at your own pace.

We booked our trip 3 months before we landed in Maui as we heard the private tours book far in advance. My husband and I were traveling with our 13 year old. We met our guide, Emma, at Makena Landing (about 10 minutes from our Airbnb house in Kihei) at 7am. After a quick run through of how to kayak / what to expect we took off and spent about 3 hours paddling between our launch point and Molokini crater. There were a number of groups out and the guides communicated whale locations to each other, so we basically went wherever the whales were hanging out. We were a little nervous about being out so far on the ocean (as we had only kayaked on lake before this) but Emma was exceptionally knowledgeable and made us feel very comfortable. Water and snacks were provided. She showed us how to put one end of the paddle into the water and the other to our ear, so we could hear the whales singing - AMAZING! All told we saw 2 males a well as a mother and her calf. At one point, one of the males breached about 30 feet from us. All in all it was worth double what we paid. There were several larger groups on the water and in those groups the guide was yelling (necessary, with so many people) and some people were falling behind; Having a guide all to yourself and going at your own comfortable pace was 100% worth the additional cost. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone. Even our teenager was beaming throughout the entire trip. Ask for Emma!! She also sent us an email later in the day, with a link to the photos she took for us as well as several recommendations for local beaches, things to see and places to eat. An experience we will never forget.

We meet with our guide Dan and he gave us a tutorial on reef safe sunscreen, types of fish we would likely see and water safety. The water is so clear!! We could see the bottom for a long way off shore. We kayaked for a long distance and sit there taking in the beauty of the ocean between Maui and Lanai. Then we hear this eerie sound and then cow-like sound. We sat the mesmerized by this magical moment that will be forever engrained in our brains. Dan said it sounded like a Humpback Whale was under us. He put on snorkel gear and saw outline of the whale under us. He took pictures and video. We saw several whales breech, blowhole and fluke. Dan thanked the whales and they sang again. Then we headed back to the reef. Dan then spotted several Black Tip Reef Sharks but they quickly swam away. The Dan excitedly pointed out a Hawaiian Monk Seal resting on a reef. What an awesome day!! The water and island views are breathtaking! Dan is awesome and informative! He taught me several types of fish that I could identify throughout our stay. If you are considering this trip...DO IT!!!

My wife and I celebrated our 20 th anniversary in Maui and decided to reserve a private whale watching kayak trip with HPS. Our guide, Erica, was awesome! We learned a lot about whales, turtles, Hawaii and conservation. We saw a lot of whales and even heard them sing! We snorkled a bit as well and got close (not too close) to turtles. What an experience! I highly recommend HPS and this tour if you want a chance to get closer to whales.

We went on 2 separate outings in the same week with HPS. My husband and I are not the most athletic and I was a bit apprehensive about being out in the open ocean. I was upfront with both our guides about my concerns. I found them both to be friendly, reassuring, informative and they check in often to ensure that we were always in our personal comfort zone. Our first trip was with Enzo. We were able to see many whlaes at distance of 100 yards (whch is as close as humans are allowed to approach by law). We were very lucky when a baby whale came closer to check us out and mama surfaced not fifteen feet away from us. Our next outing was with Dan, this was a magical day! We not only had a very close encounters with a curiouis baby humpback and it’s mama (swimming under my kayak!) but then Dan helped me go snorkelling in water that was about 15 feet deep. This was a big deal for me as I have been very afraid to try anything like this for my whole adult life. He was just great! Saw lots of beautiful fish and Dan was full of interesting information and helped us spot others that we might otherwise have missed. The tours are about three hours long, including orientation and for the level of personal attention they are very reasonably priced. Exellent for small groups. Highly recommend.
