I visit Maui once or twice a year so I'm pretty familiar with the island and the many wonders it holds. There are some things I do every time I visit but I also try to try something new with each visit. This time I tried paddling an outrigger canoe. The only bad thing about my experience was that I waited until the last day so I couldn't do it again before I left!
The staff at Maui Paddle Sports are super friendly and make sure everyone has a great time. They are well versed on Hawaiian history so it was a pleasure to hear all about how traditional outriggers are made (you'll be impressed!) and the role they have played in Hawaiian culture. We had a really special treat towards the end of our paddle when we realized our canoe was literally surrounded by sea turtles! We lost count at 10. I see sea turtles every time I go to Maui and it's always special but this is the most I've ever seen at once, I'll never forget it!
There is no doubt that I'll be calling up the folks at Maui Paddle Sports on my next visit to Maui, I can't wait to try it again! They'll be hearing from my parents as well, they also go to Maui every year and I know they'd love this experience.

Ryan guided us out a few miles on an amazingly quiet sea. The experience was fun and tranquil. When we stopped paddling we could hear the piece and quiet and then the sounds of a whale breathing. Ryan totally controlled where we paddled and brought us beside a mother and baby whale. The baby was entertaining itself and flipping around along the surface. We were basking in the excitement as the two swarm under us twice. I think we floated back to the beach after that. My husband and I were on a time schedule to check out of our hotel and Ryan made sure we weren't late. Shawn did a great job welcoming us at the start. I would recommend this experience to any vacationers!

On July 12, 2014, my family scattered the ashes of our mother at Black Rock, Kaanapali Beach. It was a truly special and wonderful experience thanks to Maui Paddle Sports. Jamie and his son took 4 of us out by canoe. I will never forget how wonderful Jayme was in creating the right atmosphere for such a task. The company will walk you through what to do. The only thing I wish I knew in advance was that the others besides the four on the canoe could have rented paddle boards and met us out at the location. However, we came into shore by the rest of the family, then out to the site for scattering ashes and flower petals, circled around that area and then came back close to shore to the others before returning to where we began.

My husband and I looked forward to going out on this outrigger tour. It was suppose to be a 2 hour outing but we were only out for 1 hour and 15 minutes and this included the 30 minute instruction before hand. Let me say that I am an experienced competitive dragon boat racer and am fully confident in my own skills out on the waters. On this morning the waves were very high and they still took us out which I don’t believe they should have. We were actually waiting for a call that they would be cancelling it as we drove to the beach. Two instructors and four guests including myself, my husband and another couple were on the outrigger. Basically after spending about 45 minutes on the water...much of it just sitting still we headed back into land. Paddling towards the beach and catching a large high wave we were told to paddle fast to ride the wave in. Once the canoe hits the sand we were told to jump out quickly and grab our seat and pull the boat up onto the sand. But as we hit the sand another wave came along. It went over my husbands head who was one seat behind me but the wave hit me straight on my back and in the head and threw me forward under the bench in front of me. My legs were stuck and when pulled out my shins were ripped apart down to the cartlige. The benches were wrapped in some kind of rough material that basically shredded my shins. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment. Getting over 20 stitches and suffering terrible trauma to my legs. I have severe damage and a very long recovery ahead of me. No one from Maui Paddle even bothered to call to see how I was and only one of the instructors bothered to come say good luck to me as I was loaded into the ambulance. I don’t think this company is very trustworthy. The female instructor told me that they hadn’t been out for weeks because of owners being away. We would not recommend this company. There 2 are other companies to use as we found out after although we have no idea how safe they are. Our decision to go with this company ruined our vacation and still our daily lives. We are finally back home after waiting for an okay from the hospital to travel but I am still not able to work as I struggle to walk and drive. In our opinion - they should not have taken the outrigger out on such rough waves. There were warnings all week about high waves because of the hurricanes off the coast. We also don’t think the instructor/steers person was experienced enough.

This was the second time my husband and I went on a canoe trip with Maui Paddle Sports leaving ffrom the Westin at Kaanapali. The first time in 2012 was great! We enjoyed the canoeing, the scenery, and the tour guides. We should have been satisfied with the one great trip but we decided to try it again in 2013. Again, the canoeing and scenery was great but we struck out on one of the tour guides. After visiting Maui six times over the last few years I have come to have a great respect for the native Hawaiians. I enjoy listening to them as they talk about their ancestors and heritage. We had one native Hawaiian tour guide that was very interesting to listen to. It was obvious that he was proud of his heritage (rightfully so!) He encouraged all of us to respect and take care of his home. We appreciated what he had to say. The other tour guide started lecturing us as soon as we left the shore and didn't stop until we returned. I assumed that he was born and raised on Maui (even though he was Caucasian) and that he had a chip on his shoulder towards the tourists. So I asked him if he had always lived here. Apparently he is from Texas and has only been here 5 years. He also apparently felt it was his duty to lecture us on how the government, tourists, and developers were screwing up the entire island. Any questions I tried to ask were answered with a sarcastic answer. I thought we were going to be taking an enjoyable canoe trip but what I got was an unwanted lecture from a Texas transplant. Again, great canoeing, great scenery, lousy guide.

We were so disappointed. We booked and paid for an outrigger canoe trip. We arrived 30 minutes early as the company had directed us to, and no one ever showed up. We called several times, left messages and emails and still have not heard from the company. I had to file a claim with my credit card company to hopefully receive a refund. DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY!!

We took the early morning (8 am) kayak tour from the beach just south of the Hyatt in Kaanapali. We were 4 people plus the 2 guides. What a wonderful experience! This was our 4th visit to Kaanapali so we were looking for something different and we sure got it. The views of Kaanapali from the water were just awesome. We went all the way to Black Rock and loved it, especially seeing the turtles swimming by our canoe! Even though I think this excursion is spendy, I highly recommend it!

Had a great time with Cord and Melody paddling out from Ka'anapali. They let us pull over for a quick swim and a cliff jump off Black Rock, and we even tried a little surfing. Fun, great guides and good equipment - would definitely recommend.

Highly recommended this company for canoeing. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. Specifically Cord and Melody/Melanie. It was a nice day out and crystal clear warm water. Took us to black rock for jumping into the ocean. Lots of fun. But the staff was the difference.

So much fun! Beautiful weather, great exercise, super guides. Seeing spinner dophins and a green sea turtle up close and personal made it even more special. Would definitely recommend.

Do you have a minimum age requirement? We'll have a 5 and a 7 year old with us when we travel.
Aloha. We always except keiki 5 years of age and up. In fact, many keiki are racing by the age of 6.

I am a Hawaii to California transplant and am returning to Maui (Kaanapali) for a short vacation - Feb. 14-19. I want to know how far in advance I need to book one of your tours. I have always wanted to learn to paddle, but was too afraid to join a team when I was a kid. Thanks, Val

Hi Val - Glad to hear you are returning to visit the land of aloha. You can book ahead, even the day before like we did. They go out at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. daily. Cost $85 per person for 2 hours. Aloha.
My wife doesn't know how to swim. Would she still be able to enjoy this?

Yes, the outriggers are very stable, and lifejackets are available upon request. I would make sure you are upfront with the info so they are aware and can plan accordingly.
Great outfit!! Very experienced paddlers, not to be missed!!
PS- Get that girl some swim lessons!!!
Where do they meet you?? Do they have a shop or do they meet you at the beach??
