About
Established in 1860, Pioneer Mill Co. was the first plantation to grow sugar commercially in Lahaina and the company built one of Hawai‘i’s first sugar mills. For 139 years, the Pioneer Mill was a mainstay of West Maui’s economy. Almost every resident of Lahaina had some connection to the mill, and if you mention it to this day, it will spark fond memories for many. When Pioneer Mill Co. ceased operations in 1999, sugar cane fields lay fallow and the Lahaina mill was left to crumble. Lahaina’s community joined forces to save it as a historic landmark so that today -- the smokestack stands with a circular walkway of commemorative bricks. An exhibit was installed that features antique mill and cane field equipment, interpretive signage and sugar train locomotives. Free parking. Great place to visit while enjoying coffee from Maui Grown Coffee Company next door.

This is a great complement to the Plantation Museum in the nearby Wharf shopping center. The smokestack, cane trains, informative displays with sugar processing machinery, and the plantation-house coffee shop across the driveway all give a bit of the feel of sugar plantation life. The exhibit is not large (a 10-minute stop is sufficient to see & read everything), but it adds some reality to the stories you find in museums around the island.

This site is in a open space and it can be visited just looking at the present objects.
Essentially are old tools used in the agriculture in the near past.
To help you undestand you there are some explanatory signs.
You can visit this place in a short time (about 20 minutes) but it's indeed quite interesting.

Sugar was King in Maui until the prices dropped and foreign competition caused the Islanders to shut down the plantations, especially on the dry side of the Island. This small exhibit is a tribute to those long gone times.

Go to the Smoke Stack visible in the sky to see this site. Easy parking and well documented with signs to see. Walk around to see the trains and view the Smoke Stack and ERA no longer available to see working.
Located near the main Lahaina highway, easy to find and see. Just go, worth your time to see history.

The Pioneer mill exhibit burned and closed August 2023.
The mill smokestack has just been announced as stable and will not be torn down.
This is in the Lahaina burn zone and the property is closed.

The site includes an old stack, some old tools and a couple of small locomotives that were involved in the sugar cane industry. There are information signs that accompany all of the artifacts, which were informative and helpful. There were very few people there when we visited the place and so I wonder how well known it is to potential tourists. It is an informational experience and will take under an hour.
