After my first booking being cancelled due to weather, we went out on the first perfect morning in several weeks. Tip: Book the 8AM paddle over the 9:30 for less wind.
Guides are super friendly and helpful with set up and paddling instruction.
We paddled straight out toward Molokai from the Westin. Sure enough, there were whales nearby! The guides demonstrated how to hold the paddle underwater with the handle up to your ear to hear the whales singing. I was in tears, it was such a beautiful sound!
Being from Seattle, I’ve had the privilege of seeing orcas in the wild, but this was my first time with humpbacks. A mother and baby passed between our two canoes at one point. It was incredible! I could have stayed out there forever!
The guides seemed to know just where to position us to see the whales as they passed through the area.
I highly recommend this experience!
Bonus: about an hour after returning, one of the guides texted an underwater video he took of the mother and baby whale. I am blown away to have this amazing keepsake.
Mahalo for an unforgettable morning!

Our family just returned from a great week at Maui. We took our kids whale watching and my wife and I tried out the e-foils, but hands down the 90 minutes we spent with Jason and KJ in the outrigger was our favorite. Our kids had so much fun paddling, and the conversation with Jason and KJ were enjoyable and informative. We also liked the banter with the two other boats that went out the same time we did. We quickly learned that the crew on all three boats competed professionally and did Inter island open water rowing competitions. They were very safety focused and when the winds picked up quickly we were all at ease given their experience and training. The boats were fantastic and in great racing condition. I wish we would have done this at the start of our trip and then gone again right before again leaving. We met Ali one morning and he was so accommodating - we weren’t sure if our kids would enjoy going and how safe it would be in mixed conditions. They figured a way for us to go with our entire family in a very stable outrigger - and close enough to the shoreline to avoid the high winds, but our far enough it was an adventure. Again, I can’t speak highly enough of everyone we meet with crew and company.

I cannot say enough about these guys. This is the second time we’ve booked an outrigger canoe tour with this company and if possible, this one was even better than the first one. Right from the start, they made everybody feel welcomed and comfortable. Our guide, Wahi, was super friendly and knowledgeable, and gave us information about the sport of outrigger canoe, plus lots of information on Hawaiian customs and tradition. We had a great paddle, a dip in the ocean, and saw an enormous sea turtle. These guys are the best! A hui hou!

First the good aspect: My daughter and I got a spot with really late notice. It was cool to try the outrigger canoe and jumping off the black rock was fun. Now, the negatives: our guides didn't give us much if any history or background on the canoe. We paddled in silence for much of it. On our way back to the beach to disembark the canoe, we sat in silence on the water for a while, just waiting for the time to pass so we could go back to the beach. When it was our turn to paddle back to the beach, we were not given any instruction ahead of time. This led to us being yelled at by employees to "Get out of the canoe! Pull the canoe onto the beach! Get out!" There were 3 teenagers and a mom in our canoe and we were all confused why we were not informed how to safely handle, as we were told after, "the most dangerous part of the experience". That last interaction left a negative feeling in us all about the whole experience. I wish we hadn't have gotten those spots at the last minute and I'd saved hundreds of dollars.

We have done this trip three times now! If you are looking to experience local Hawaiian hospitality and culture, look no further! Jamie and his crew are the best! This is also a locally owned business so they put their heart and soul into your experience.

Every time we do this trip it is full of cultural learnings, good laughs, beautiful scenery, wonderful hospitality and of course sightings of turtles, dolphins, fish--whatever nature decides to show us that day!

This is NOT a 'touristy' excursion...they make you feel like locals, ohana, and you will walk away with memories for a lifetime. And you'll have bragging rights to tell and show your friends that you paddled a Hawaiian canoe! Then of course, you'll be like us and want to do the trip again and again! Kudos to Jamie and his team for all of the memories. We'll be back!

What an amazing experience for our family! Don’t pass up the opportunity to let the wonderful crew from Ali’i Maui Outrigger Canoes take your family out on an unforgettable adventure. From the moment we spoke to Wahi over the phone, he was friendly, accommodating, and put a nervous mama at ease. Over busy spring break, he was able to get our family of 4 a time slot the next day. Being able to handle the canoes and oars was such an honor. We could not have asked for better guides in Wahi and Sarah. Along the way, Wahi taught us names for the various marine life we were seeing, kept encouraging us as we paddled, and just had a contagious spirit and zest for life. When our 7 year old was too cold to stay in the water snorkeling, Sarah caringly entertained her by making a snowman out of sand up on the beach. Not only did we see turtles, we spotted a group of spinner dolphins! Wahi and Sarah led us paddling to get a closer look. What a rush! It was more than we could have asked for. Back on shore, we had the privilege of meeting Wahi’s father. He was kind enough to meet us the next day so we could purchase Ali’i merchandise. Mahalo to all!

We had a group of 4 adults who did an outrigger trip with Ali’i Maui from the Westin Villas. It was definitely one of our top experiences from our Maui trip. I emailed to secure the booking and Uncle Jamie was good about getting back to me. They called to collect payment the day before the trip.

We booked a 9:30 trip. There was a group of two outriggers that went out at 8, and they returned promptly by 9:30 for our trip. We did a very brief tutorial on how to paddle then we were in the water.

It was just the four of us with two guides. The two guides with us and all the other employees were so friendly from start to finish. They make you feel part of the family. We were a little nervous before we started about being out on the ocean, but that vanished quickly because we knew we were in good hands.

The paddling was really very easy and felt safe. They took us over to black rock and one of our party got out to jump. After we were back on our way my wife regretted not jumping so they offered to go again on the way back. This put us over the 90 minutes allotted but they didn’t care-customer experience was our first.

Overall I highly recommend doing an outrigger and especially with Ali’i Maui. Uncle Jamie and his Ohana are top notch!

My husband, two grandsons and I went out with Uncle and Chris. They were so funny and welcoming and our trip was so much fun. The boys got to swim over to Black Rock, climb up, and jump off multiple times. What a great surprise. Truly a magical day for all of us! !

This was the surprise of our trip! It was a last minute reservation and we are so happy we went! The crew was just extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We went out for an hour and a half and found ourselves right next to three whales. There was a baby, a mother and an “escort” wandering around us…we’ve never seen such a close display of whales! The crew was very cautious and careful to ensure we did not crowd the whales and instead allowed the whales to come to us. It was the first experience on Maui that felt local. If you are in the area, you should definitely contact Ali’i Maui for a canoe trip! It was the high of our vacation! Mahalo Ali’i Maui!

THE BEST canoe crew in Maui! We have tried other canoes but nothing compared to Ali Maui canoes. They had great attitudes and provided a fun family experience for my family of 9 people. I would highly recommend them and I will canoe with them every time I visit Maui.
