Whenever we drove through Kihei we noticed the activity at Kamaole Beach. We were there over Memorial Day weekend and there were picnics, volleyball games, surfing and fun had by locals and visitors. Looks like the place to go!

Kihei is more of a local Maui experience, great central location for all activities, but not as luxurious and vacation-touristy as Kaanapali. We loved the Hawaiian flair and comfortable options of Kaanapali, but usually end up in Kihei for central location and many close snorkeling options. If you want organized kids programs, Kaanapali and Wailea are best. Also for golf and 5 star luxuries. Otherwise, Kihei all the way
