We were fortunate enough to luck into using Maui Snorkel Tours as our Molokini boat tour got canceled the night before our excursion and MST had an opening for us because someone had coincidentally just cancelled with them. Blessing in disguise! My wife and three daughters met Toby in the early morning and we drove out to Honalua Bay located in the northern region of west Maui.
He gave us great education on equipment and the fish and coral we would (and did) see on our hour and a half personally guided snorkel tour. We had a GREAT time. We not only saw fish but knew what they were because Toby reviewed them before we entered the water.
He took us to the best spot to enter the water and to the best spots in the bay. The highlight of the tour was not just seeing numerous turtles, but actually swimming with one as it came to the surface for air. Our family was the only ones near it and it was like it put on a little show just for us (maybe Toby bribed it with some special green algae, eh?).
At the end of the day, it was well worth having a personal guide for our family as opposed to being on a large or even a small boat. Toby made sure we understood everything and felt safe and confident before getting heading out in the water (he even helped and encouraged my wife when she had a temporary battle of motion sickness while in the water).
The crew at MST has decades of experience and know the Maui waters like the back of their hand. Take advantage of that and use this company. You will not regret it.
Mahalo Toby!!!

We booked this tour because we wanted our two families to have a good introduction to snorkeling and didn't want to be stuck on a boat with a hundred people during COVID.
We all had a great time. My son is on the ASD spectrum and has a hard time with new sensations and had some initial problems with his mask and this resulted in a big tantrum about not wanting to be in the ocean. If we had been on our own we probably would have quit, but the guide was so patient and persistent and encouraging and got him out to the reef and got him to put his face in the water and pointed out the specific fish and from then on my son was able to independently snorkel for two hours and it was a big success. The guide was firm but kind and his help was essential, as I was also learning the equipment myself, while trying to support my son.
The introduction to the fish we would see, while initially feeling very time consuming, was great because the guide could then tell us what fish were under us and gave the three (8yo) kids the ability to shout to each other about what fish they were seeing and explore and share the experience with each other. Afterwards, my son asked for his own fish book so he could better learn about the fish he saw.
For beginners this trip is exactly what I would recommend, especially if you have younger kids who need extra help or encouragement, and if you want the extra education about the wildlife you will see.

Ed was our guide. He was great--so patience and knowledgeable. When my younger son decided that he was done with snorkeling before we made it to the turtle destination, Ed calmly guided the four of us back to shore and then took my husband and older son back out for another hour so that they could see the turtles. Also, he took excellent pictures and videos of the experience for no additional charge. I would rebook in a heartbeat and I highly recommend!

We met our guide Toby nearby and followed him to Honolua Bay where we snorkeled. He is easygoing and very experienced as a diver specifically in Hawaii, and gave us a thorough rundown of the fish that we would be seeing, which made it more exciiting when we saw them later. He himself pointed out fish by name as we went along that we would have otherwise missed, and took us to a good spot to see several green sea turtles! It was great unwinding afterwards too with some snacks. Would definitely snorkel again with them, and it was a lot nicer compared to past snorkeling experiences on the larger boat tours!

Skip the boats and get a personal experience! My husband and I have snorkeled the Carribean a few times, but it was our first time taking our boys. With the rough waters in Maui, we felt more comfortable going out with a guide and are so glad we did. Maui Snorkel Tours didn't disappoint, it was the best snorkeling experience we have ever had. Toby was our guide and he educated us (before and after the snorkel) on all the marine life we saw. He pulled along a kick board that had a dry bag to keep our phones and keys with us. The kick board also provided a place that we could keep a hand on as we snorkeled and keep us altogether. Thanks to Toby's knowledge of the reefs and which one to visit based on the weather conditions, we saw thousands of colorful fish and about a dozen turtles. Fantastic experience! Mahalo Maui Snorkel Tours!

This was the experience of a lifetime! Toby was our tour guide. He took the time to explain the gear to us first time snorkelers. He also took time to show us photos of the fish we would see underwater. I’m so grateful he did that. As we snorkeled, he would point out the fish and pop up out of the eater to tell us what we were seeing. He towed a boogie board for us to hang onto if we felt insecure about snorkeling. He was fun yet serious about safety. I would encourage everyone to use Maui Snorkel Tours and if you are lucky to have Toby as your guide, you will learn so much and feel safe and have the experience of a lifetime.

Maui Snorkel Tours was amazing!!! I am a Scuba diver with forty years of experience diving in the Sea Of Cortez, Mexico, and my wife is more of an occasional diver. A friend recommended Maui Snorkel because they gave
personal one on one type tours. We meet Ed the morning of our dive and he started with safety but then taught us about what we would be seeing. Then he started the tour and photographed us, the reef and sea the life that we encountered, he explained everything as we went along. When we were done he had snacks and drinks which is always nice at the end of a dive. We loved learning about the sea life in Maui. Ed told us that he would email the photos he took, we were so happy with the dive and thought it couldn't get any better. We were absolutely overwhelmed when a Video came in addition to the photos. Ed had taught us about the reef and fish from a book he had helped to author by shooting all the photos for the book, it never occurred to us that our photos would be that quality. The PROFESSIONAL quality was that of National Geographic. Our little video had all the fish identified, we were photographed, and it has now become the epic part of our trip. We feel the value of this trip was ten times what it cost!! Thank you so much Ed and Suzzy!!!!

Fantastic experience. Our group of 3 were not experienced snorkelers, but our guide Toby put us at ease and walked us through every step of the way with good humor and patience. We had a private tour and they texted us the snorkeling location the night before to ensure the best conditions. Toby took great care in personally fitting masks, wetsuits, and flippers, as well as educating us about the sea life we hoped to see before we got in the ocean, and calling them out as we encountered them on the swim. FYI there is no boat - they take you in from the shoreline, and Toby had a boogie board that we could all hold on to as we swam to guide us and help us stay afloat.

I love snorkeling and have longed to share this pleasurable activity with others in my family, however they had limited swimming ability and a fear of water. We were so glad we went with Maui Snorkel Tours, and it ended up being the highlight of our vacation to the island! Our tour consisted of myself, my mom (late 60s, very beginner swimmer, never been in deep water before except one experience in which she returned to the boat after 45 seconds) and my fiance (30s, uncomfortable in water, courageously tried to snorkel with me once before rather unsuccessfully). Even before our trip, the company called us to make sure we knew what to bring, what to expect, and so on.
Our tour guide Ed Robinson was incredible! He is so experienced and knowledgeable. Before heading into the water, he took his time making sure everyone was comfortable with the equipment and procedures, and we were treated to a lesson on the types of ocean life we might see (featuring photographs he took himself!). I have been on other snorkel tours before with different companies, and this was the most educational experience for sure.
Ed lent my mom a helping hand on the rocky shore and made sure our gear was properly fitted. In the water, for unconfident swimmers there is a board you can hold onto - with the life jackets the two others in my group felt super safe and eventually one of them was able to leave the board, I don't think this would have happened had we not had such a patient and reassuring guide. We saw so many types of fish (and thanks to the lesson beforehand, we could easily recognize some), invertebrates, and several sea turtles. It was truly amazing. There were even beverages and snacks to enjoy after we got out of the water. Ed also took (super high quality!) photos with his camera and sent them to us after our trip. It's wonderful to have this souvenir documenting our experience.
Wholeheartedly recommend Maui Snorkel Tours! Thank you Ed!

This was our first time in Hawaii and snorkeling. My family and I have different comfort levels in more than 6 ft of water. Though my kids (7&9) were champs, my husband and I were anxious. I recommend this tour for first time nervous snorkelers as it was small due to Covid and Toby our guide was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. For our peace of mind he outfitted us with a swim vest and we were allowed to hold on to the body board, which we did with our dear life. Prior to us getting into the water he schooled us on the names of the fish we would see. We will definitely use them again if we go back. Thanks Toby for the wonderful experience.

Hi, I have a son with very bad eye sight and he doesn’t want to wear contact lenses.
Is there anyway he can snorkel with his glasses?
Written July 24, 2019
Ask about ones with correction for eyesight. If they don’t have it look into renting them for him.

Where does this tour meet? Is it feasible if we are staying near Napili?
Written December 29, 2018
We stayed in Wailea and met in oluwalu. The traffic isn't bad at all and I would easily drive longer to go with this company. You don't know where you are snorkeling until the day before because ocean conditions change and they want you to have your experience at the beach with the best visibility.

I would like to know what areas/beaches you tend to use for snorkeling since you do not use a boat. Thank you.
Written June 18, 2018
We went to a beach south of Lahaina. The guides apparently change the beaches depending on tide etc.

- do they have full face masks for adults? because i'm afraid i can not breathe with the normal mask
- my husband and son do'nt want to snorkel. can they go with us on the boat? at what price?
- how to make pictures? with a gopro? (head/brest?)

Hi, thanks for your interest in Maui Snorkel Tours. The most important answer to your questions is that we do operate from a boat. We have found leading tours from a beach allows us to offer the most personalized and thorough snorkeling experience. Many of our clients have never snorkeled and some do not swim. We give each snorkeler a safe snorkeling experience full of information and knowledge on the marine life they are seeing.
We have a few full face masks of different sizes, however we rarely use them. We have found the regular mask and snorkel are a better experience for most people. The biggest problem we have found when using a full face mask is that although they breath fine with normal activity, heavy breathing (think excited or anxious or swimming hard) will restrict breathing and can create claustrophobic or panic situations. We will supply a full face mask if you request it and we will work with you in shallow water until you are comfortable whether you are using a mask and snorkel or a full face mask.
As for GoPro cameras I suggest hand holding is the best. Mounting the camera on your head will position the camera out of the water or close to the surface where bubbles and water motion will create visual problems. If the camera must me mounted, your chest is the best option.
I hope this answers your question. You will love Maui once you arrive here.

Can non-swimmer do snorkeling? We are group of four want to try snorkeling first time without knowing how to swim :(.
Written October 10, 2016
Most of the tour guides prefer if you can swim a little, but they do provide life jackets so non-swimmers can go, mostly for the walk in from the beach excursions. To be sure check with the tour guide/company they will tell if the will take non-swimmers out. They might even do a special tour just for the four of you.
Good luck n have fun...

Would we have our pictures taken while in water snorkeling as a remembrance?
P.S. Both of us are non swimmers and would go on a private tour!!!

For your snorkel trip, how many people were on board? We are looking for a trip that would be exclusive to our family of 6 or one that would be 12-15 people. Most of the boats seem bigger. Our youngest is 6 so it would have to be one she can board. Thanks
Written July 29, 2015
Hi,
We were just 2 people and there is no boat for the Maui Snorkel tours, they just do off the shore. I think they select the coast based on the weather and probably the best spot for the turtles and corals. Let me know this answers your question.
