We are experienced snorkelers, but wanted a trip that was a little easier physically now that we are older, and that could be adjusted to our stamina. Maui Snorkel Tours was perfect for us. They only take private groups, so you can customize to your comfort level. You snorkel off a beach, that is selected the day before for maximum weather and wave conditions. Our guide was Toby. He met us at a beautiful beach, fitted us with all gear, had a nice presentation on the beach, complete with color photos, that described the fish and coral we would see. Then he led us out in a group beyond the coral reef, pointing out fish as we went. He uses a boogie board so that you can rest as you go. We went out about an easy quarter mile, to a location where green sea turtles were lounging under water getting their shells cleaned by black surgeon fish. It was great. There were a few swimmers on the beach, but no one else snorkeling near us, so you could really enjoy yourself. We finished with snacks and drinks on the beach as we dried off.

Fantastic experience. Our group of 3 were not experienced snorkelers, but our guide Toby put us at ease and walked us through every step of the way with good humor and patience. We had a private tour and they texted us the snorkeling location the night before to ensure the best conditions. Toby took great care in personally fitting masks, wetsuits, and flippers, as well as educating us about the sea life we hoped to see before we got in the ocean, and calling them out as we encountered them on the swim. FYI there is no boat - they take you in from the shoreline, and Toby had a boogie board that we could all hold on to as we swam to guide us and help us stay afloat.

We were fortunate enough to luck into using Maui Snorkel Tours as our Molokini boat tour got canceled the night before our excursion and MST had an opening for us because someone had coincidentally just cancelled with them. Blessing in disguise! My wife and three daughters met Toby in the early morning and we drove out to Honalua Bay located in the northern region of west Maui.

He gave us great education on equipment and the fish and coral we would (and did) see on our hour and a half personally guided snorkel tour. We had a GREAT time. We not only saw fish but knew what they were because Toby reviewed them before we entered the water.

He took us to the best spot to enter the water and to the best spots in the bay. The highlight of the tour was not just seeing numerous turtles, but actually swimming with one as it came to the surface for air. Our family was the only ones near it and it was like it put on a little show just for us (maybe Toby bribed it with some special green algae, eh?).

At the end of the day, it was well worth having a personal guide for our family as opposed to being on a large or even a small boat. Toby made sure we understood everything and felt safe and confident before getting heading out in the water (he even helped and encouraged my wife when she had a temporary battle of motion sickness while in the water).

The crew at MST has decades of experience and know the Maui waters like the back of their hand. Take advantage of that and use this company. You will not regret it.

Mahalo Toby!!!

What a great snorkeling experience! My son and I met Toby early am and drove to the snorkeling location. Toby was fantastic - knowledgable, funny, focused on the experience. My son (19) and I were the only ones (they do one family only since COVID) and although the location was public it was nice to have Toby to ourselves. He educated us beforehand on the fish we'd likely see - it did not disappoint! We probably saw nearly 100 different types of fish - including many schools, one with thousands of fish. It was a never-ending ribbon. Highlight was the sea turtles - probably 8-10 in total. We went further out with Toby than we would have on our own. Although the bay was more crowded with snorkel boat tours closer to shore we had our own encounter with several turtles out further by a "cleaning station" where they rest on the reef and have small wrasse fish clean them. They came up for air right by us. Nice to watch them peacefully without a crowd of people nearby.
My son and I were both comfortable swimming independently alongside Toby who was great at pointing out things to us the whole time. He shared that he's taken first time swimmers out before - he's very capable. We lucked out with booking because of a last-minute cancellation - BOOK IN ADVANCE if you want this experience!

Skip the boats and get a personal experience! My husband and I have snorkeled the Carribean a few times, but it was our first time taking our boys. With the rough waters in Maui, we felt more comfortable going out with a guide and are so glad we did. Maui Snorkel Tours didn't disappoint, it was the best snorkeling experience we have ever had. Toby was our guide and he educated us (before and after the snorkel) on all the marine life we saw. He pulled along a kick board that had a dry bag to keep our phones and keys with us. The kick board also provided a place that we could keep a hand on as we snorkeled and keep us altogether. Thanks to Toby's knowledge of the reefs and which one to visit based on the weather conditions, we saw thousands of colorful fish and about a dozen turtles. Fantastic experience! Mahalo Maui Snorkel Tours!

I love snorkeling and have longed to share this pleasurable activity with others in my family, however they had limited swimming ability and a fear of water. We were so glad we went with Maui Snorkel Tours, and it ended up being the highlight of our vacation to the island! Our tour consisted of myself, my mom (late 60s, very beginner swimmer, never been in deep water before except one experience in which she returned to the boat after 45 seconds) and my fiance (30s, uncomfortable in water, courageously tried to snorkel with me once before rather unsuccessfully). Even before our trip, the company called us to make sure we knew what to bring, what to expect, and so on.

Our tour guide Ed Robinson was incredible! He is so experienced and knowledgeable. Before heading into the water, he took his time making sure everyone was comfortable with the equipment and procedures, and we were treated to a lesson on the types of ocean life we might see (featuring photographs he took himself!). I have been on other snorkel tours before with different companies, and this was the most educational experience for sure.

Ed lent my mom a helping hand on the rocky shore and made sure our gear was properly fitted. In the water, for unconfident swimmers there is a board you can hold onto - with the life jackets the two others in my group felt super safe and eventually one of them was able to leave the board, I don't think this would have happened had we not had such a patient and reassuring guide. We saw so many types of fish (and thanks to the lesson beforehand, we could easily recognize some), invertebrates, and several sea turtles. It was truly amazing. There were even beverages and snacks to enjoy after we got out of the water. Ed also took (super high quality!) photos with his camera and sent them to us after our trip. It's wonderful to have this souvenir documenting our experience.

Wholeheartedly recommend Maui Snorkel Tours! Thank you Ed!

Thanks to Maui Snorkel Tours, we had a fantastic experience seeing marine life up close from a beach on West Maui. I am a pretty good snorkeler, but I planned this tour with my 80-year-old stepmom in mind, in hopes that she might be able to get over her fears, and for my partner, who is less confident in the water.

Toby was our guide, and he did a fantastic job, starting on the beach with some serious safety instruction and facts about fish and corals, well-leavened with humor and fun. Sadly, my stepmom balked from getting in the water at the last minute, but Toby set her up on the beach to be comfortable with a good book while we snorkeled.

Toby outfitted my partner Gene and I with wetsuits, snorkels, and fins, and Gene used a flotation vest. Toby set out with a boogie board that we could use as a helpful tool to stay afloat when we need to adjust our masks and snorkels. Toby pointed out a multitude of fish and corals along the way, quizzing us on what we had retained from our instruction on the beach. We saw nearly every fish he had prepared us for. The highlight came when we lingered at a sea turtle "cleaning station," marveling as turtles approached us from all directions to take their turns getting serviced by cleaner wrasse fish--what an idyllic sight!

Gene definitely gained in confidence as a snorkeler from this experience, with Toby sharing lots of tips that made this a great experience for him. And even though I didn't feel like I "needed" the help, I have to admit I learned a thing or two as well. This will defiitely be a repeat experience for us when we return. I am hoping that my stepmom will finally take the plunge next time, and I trust that she could not be in better hands than with this operator.

Ed was our guide. He was great--so patience and knowledgeable. When my younger son decided that he was done with snorkeling before we made it to the turtle destination, Ed calmly guided the four of us back to shore and then took my husband and older son back out for another hour so that they could see the turtles. Also, he took excellent pictures and videos of the experience for no additional charge. I would rebook in a heartbeat and I highly recommend!

Neither my Dad nor I are swimmers, yet we wanted to see marine life up close.
Baba (my Dad) had had a near drowning experience when he was a teenager and had not swam since … I did take a few lessons as a kid but never graduated from the small pool 😂 … So I think we were both truly pushing ourselves when we decided to give it a shot. Even then our expectations were to just coast along the shore … perhaps see a fish or two …
And then, somehow, we really really lucked out!!! Our instructor Ed Robinson truly was our snorkeling fairy godfather 🧙‍♂️ in every way. Ed has been a professional diver and trainer since 1971. He is also an acclaimed and published under water photographer (his brand is Hawaiian Watercolors company). Forget the shores, he bravely took us to the deep waters where corals abound, fish dart around, and turtles gently play … We never imagined that we would experience so much 💕🙏🏽🐢🐠
Bless you Ed for showing us so much patience, encouragement, and compassion.
We will forever be grateful to Ed and Suzzy at Maui Snorkel Tours 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Ed was amazing!! He was the best - you can really tell he's passionate about the marine life and ocean and the experience you have. He brought us to such a great area (waters were very clear), gave us wetsuits, educated us about the islands and marine life, and gave us snacks for the road. Communication about meet ups/instructions, etc was perfect too. Such a great experience with him, and a highlight of my trip. The BEST snorkling excursion!! Can't imagine a better one.
