I was told to be early as their security line is a bit of a nightmare but that bags could not be checked until three hours until departure. Showed up early and despite the four American Airlines desk agents standing there I was told to come back in an hour and that they were closing between flights. Why are you shutting down between flights when passengers are missing flights due to your insanely long lines. The place is reminiscent of a greyhound bus station full of locals that hate the tourists who find their paychecks.

I had a rental for a mid size car. We arrived at the airport at the time we had our reservation and were told they only had ugly minivan or we had to pay a huge upgrade fee to get a jeep. That's not what we reserved and not what we wanted. That's a joke and a ripoff. I would avoid this place unless you want to pay additional upgrade fees.

This is a very nice airport, could use a lounge and a bit of cleaning in the bathrooms, but all in all it is a very good place to fly in and out of. The waiting areas are very nice and open, with birds flying all about and the workers are very friendly. Lots of small shopping areas and quick TSA and check in. Loved the warm weather and enjoyed the last afternoon in Maui.

I would warn you NOT to use Ace Car Rental in Maui - they are not on airport property like the others - lost 4 hours of precious vacation time to even get into a vehicle. Plus their shuttle back to airport stops at 4pm! If you have a later flight out you have to get an uber or taxi after you drop off the car. $$. Then you sign blank screens at checkin that end up opening you up to extra fees and waive insurance you paid for if you go to #1 Maui attraction - road to Hana. Was an extra $1200+ bad experience. Paid for lost key fob and towing at check-in but they "didn't cover it". Didn't even have an extra key even though the offered to insure it.

Aloha, when you arrive, get the hell out when you leave. Arrived for business. Had not been there in 2 years and I think it's changed for the worse. This feels like a little country bumpkin airport but its actually big business. Used to be able to walk out the good maybe walk 50 -100 feet to grab a car. now it's only a three-minute walk if you're in good shape and do not have to handle too many bags. If your a Senior or an ADA I can see this as a real issue. The "Trolley" seems to be down more times then it's running after talking to locals. A Multi-Million dollar attraction that's about as useless as the California High-Speed Train. the rental car companies do not give any information and often you find yourself standing in line when you could have gone direct to a car. Going back to the mainland, THE NIGHTMARE BEGINS. the Rental car return is staffed by a bunch of rude idiots whose purpose in life is to park cars as fast as they can and demand you hurry up. Then you must go through an agriculture check station, however, no one says you have to until you are already in line to check your bags. Return and repeat. now goes the TSA maze. not only are they inefficient but they run you through multiple lines as if your cattle crisscrossing and often you find yourself passing or being passed by someone who was behind you then ahead of you. this is all being done outside in the heat, the humidity and with limited patience. Now that you are sweating and finally through the TSA headache, you have to go at least one and often two more agriculture inspection stations. Inst once enough. To make things even more bitter is the LACK of anyone even the airline staff at the gates to be polite. It is funny when you arrive everyone is friendly Aloha Aloha everywhere when you are on your way home it is more like Don't let the door hit you on the butt on the way out

I was fortunate enough to only have to fly into this airport once since we took a commuter flight from across the island to leave.
Disembarking our flight was unremarkable until we were met with a wall of humidity that I had not felt since arriving in a Bombay airport (back before its huge renovation AND when the city was still called Bombay!).
Baggage claim was quick and efficient.
The real problems began when leaving the terminal. We had a rental car reserved months ago. To our dismay, the Avis kiosk was abandoned and we were redirected to a shuttle to another location.
This facility had a massive line with only two people working the stations. It was approaching 85 degrees and 50% humidity this day and the facility was NOT AIR CONDITIONED.
There were plenty of older people and children alike who were fresh off transpacific flights at risk for heatstroke (cue flashback to India travels).
After about 45 minutes in line and our surprisingly friendly agent, we were given our recipient and told to wait outside for our vehicle. Outside!
20 minutes of waiting and sweating later, I had to sneak between waiting, frustrated customers in line to remind the agent. We were provided our vehicle over 10 minutes later.
Normally, I would chalk this up to a 'bad day' or 'freak occurrence' for the company. Except that when I returned my vehicle, I saw the exact same scenario playing out with delayed, frustrated, heat-exhausted customers.
To summarize, AVIS made a pathetic effort at serving their customers who've already paid thousands to be in a luxury destination. Their neglect bordered on dangerous when it came to herding people in a hot, confined area.
Kahului Airport, you are represented by this occurring on your property and should ensure some accountability from your tenants.
I loved Maui deeply, but will be sure to take an Uber to some offsite rental when I return.

How do I start? Line for the shuttle bus was three times the wait as National and Hertz. Felt so sorry for those in wheelchairs. Line long to check in, when I did was told the cars were being cleaned and it would be 30 minutes before my car is pulled up in the front and for me to "watch out for it." After 30 minutes I looked down the parking lot line of spaces and just happened to see my car parked there. I went back in to complain about their "system" and was told by the aggravated attendant "well, no one else has had a problem!" As if that makes it ok if I had an issue and no one else spoke up. The nice lady who was not employed by Avis and apparently was an "ambassador" for the company said the employees don't really care about customers, they were there to punch the clock and then go home. She said try and have a good vacation. Avis, you have lost a longtime customer and I will relay this message to as many folks as I can.

The shuttle situation at OGG is incredibly confusing. Companies use one or more names and allow booking through third party vendors. B forewarned of these third party vendors as many cannot and do not deliver as promised. Moreover, the shuttle companies hate working with them and may refuse to help you if you haven't booked directly with them. One of the worst offenders is Viator who seem to use the airport transfer as a way to spam you with info about all their other packages. They do not actually book your airport transfer and try to blame you if things do not work out. You are much better going directly through one of the companies who have a space in the airport.

Kahului airport is like stepping back in time....and there's nothing you can do about it but enjoy the start of your vacation on Maui.
I follow the Maui Cookie Lady on IG and mmmm her cookies are a little pricey, but very deeelish. These specialty cookies are sold by terminal 22 at the DFS store. It's kinda tiny but filled with lots of goodies.
I bought 4 packs and will buy tons more when I visit Maui.

Flew Island Air from OGG on 10/26, we were scheduled out at 1443. Upon checkin we were able to get a 1204 flight. The line through TSA was a breeze, and the gate area (Gate 9) was equipped with both USB and electrical outlets near each seat. Good selection of food and gift shops and the central atrium is a nice touch.
