My husband is into free diving & spear fishing, and wanted to book a trip. I was going to find something else to do, but they offered for me to come as a “tag-along” where I could snorkel. It was great. I learned a lot about free diving, how to hold my breath, and saw some cool fish. Their ethic is also great, encouraging the spearing of invasive species & respect for the fish. Our guides were very welcoming, friendly, encouraging & knowledgeable. Great experience!

Keoki was great; warm, friendly, informative and helpful the whole time. I had snorkeled a bunch but never spearfished and wanted to try it out. We went over all sorts of safety and logistical stuff in the shop then went out and tried some test-dives and shooting. Then we drifted with the current for 1.5-2hrs, with me and the other person in the group both getting some shots. We saw a turtle and Keoki caught an Octopus to show us. We didn't stick any of the fish we got shots at but I learned a lot and had a blast. Hope to do it again sometime.

These guys run a really quality operation. Keoki was our guide and he was awesome. I didn't land a fish, but I poked a really nice one! It was an incredible experience and everything I could expect from an introductory spearfishing lesson. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about spearfishing.

I took my adult sons here for an adventure. We are experienced snorkelers and divers but have never spearfished. Hans and Keoki are VERY good at what they do. They are extremely patient and cover all you need to know before you get in the water. Hans teaches valuable breathing techniques which work in the water. Keoki is an encyclopedia when it comes to knowledge of the reef and is a beast when it comes to stalking and hunting. He was very patient and encouraging when teaching new techniques. Not to mention a very cool dude, also!!
You don't have to have any experience as they tailor the trip to the group's needs but some time spent snorkeling would help out.
I can't wait to book another trip with them the next time I'm in Maui. It was a blast and definitely the highlight of my trip. If you want a cool adventure and a hell of a good time, please book a trip with these guys.

Bobby, Sarah, and the crew were true pros. Their main thing is education and safety and these 2 priorities resulted in a fantastic trip free diving and spear fishing. The skills we learned will be valuable going forward on other excursions. We hope to be back for lesson 201! Thanks guys!

What an awsome experience. I have not done spearfishing in a long time. Peter made feel like I know exactly what I was doing he made me feel confortable. This guy is very patient and very relaxed. I would definitely call him next time I come back to Maui. Keep up the good work Peter!

The husband and sons (15&18) went yesterday against my better judgment - the whole thing seemed scary to this mom. They had the time of their lives! Even the hesitant husband. Peter was informative, patient, and explained everything they needed to know about spearfishing - there is a lot to learn, so the first hour is on the beach going over techniques, safety, speargun operation, breathing (or rather, how to best hold one's breath in a dive) & very importantly, how to repectfully fish (that is, ID of different types of fish - which ones one can spear & which are native species & protected). 2 of the 3 successfully speared a fish. They dove near a beautiful reef & saw tons of beautiful fish & some sea turtles, Recommendation: you need to be very comfortable 1) swimming pretty far out (fins, wetsuit & masks provided), & 2) holding your breath and diving down. Peter was really good about working with them on techniques with the breath and staying calm. If you love being in the ocean, are looking for something really cool to do & tell the folks back home, this is the activity for you! We went with option 7:30-12ish. Less time wouldn't have been enough. Theynwanted to go again today, but it's our last day and something else is scheduled. Highly recommend Peter, the company owner. Very knowledgable and professional. We were directed to this company by Pete, the concierge at the Ritz Carlton, due to their safety record and that they are insured & bonded.

My son, brother, and I had the opportunity to go out with both John and Peter on two seperate dive excursions in March. On the first trip with John we learned free-diving techniques and hunting skills. We were able to target some roi on the first trip, but what was more important was knowledge gained and free-diving skills we learned. You would be surprised at the simplest advice you pickup, especially from gear prep, movement in the water, and breath hold. We went out about 1.5 miles from shore (which was intimidating), but an excellent experience. On the second dive, Peter took us to Mala boat ramp in Lahaina. This was a great spot where we scored a large chub and a few other fish. I have Go-Pro video of Peter hunting and some of the shots are amazing. You learn so much by goiing out with experts who have been doing this for years. I live in the Bay Area and they were recommended by the freediveshop in Sacramento, CA, that is a great shop with good availability and prices on equipment. Something to remember is that spearfishing is like deer hunting. You may get a few shots during a dive or none at all. You must stalk and hunt your preyl Lot's of Fun!

We were referred to South Maui Spearfishing by the captain of the Hula Girl snorkeling boat. I called and my call was answered as opposed to just leaving a message. Peter was very good at explaining everything. The price was good and we booked the trip. We met on the beach with John the instructor and he was very good at teaching us everything we needed to know. I had been free diving before in CA for abalone, but I learned a lot about spearfishing in Maui. Everything was great. The next day, another spearfishing outfit returned my call from 3 days prior. Oh well, they were too late. I plan to hire South Maui Spearfishing again next time we're in Maui. This was a lot of fun and there were no suprises. I highly recommend them.

My teenage son and his friend wanted to go spearfishing. After researching online, I found South Maui Spearfishing's website. We decided to book their private boat excursion to Lanai. It was the perfect trip! While my son and his friend went spearfishing with Bobby, my husband and I fished on the boat.
We all had a fantastic time and caught some invasive fish "roi" as well as fish for dinner. Bobby and his team are extremely knowledgeable.
I highly recommend this excursion for anyone who is interested in doing more than the traditional Maui excursions.
We loved it so much, we told the Concierge at the Four Seasons Maui to recommend this excursion and company to their guests.
We all had a fantastic time and caught some invasive fish "roi" as well as fish for dinner. Bobby and his team are extremely knowledgeable.
I highly recommend this excursion for anyone who is interested in doing more than the traditional Maui excursions.

What would the price range be for two people to participate in the entry level excursion?

It was about 4-5 hours total I think. The first couple of hours were on land .. learning breathing, how to hold your breath, etc. ... and last 1-2 hrs were in the water. The gal who answers the phone is very helpful .. can give you lots more details. Have fun!
