Nate’s the best! Since we live in Maui, we knew exactly who to book when our son Chris visited for a few days of beginning kiteboarding lessons. Chris came to Kanaha Beach near the airport and started his first morning lesson straight off his 5 hour flight from the SF Bay area. Nate’s teaching experience allows him to quickly calibrate his students’ abilities, needs and unspoken expectations so that he can jumpstart their learning while ensuring a great fun and confidence-building experience. In less than an hour, Chris was already in the water wearing his radio helmet and practicing body-dragging and safety self-rescues with his kite. By the second day, he was using the waterstart to get up and ride on the kiteboard for 20-30 ft. By the third day, he was riding upwind on long stretches and doing simple turns. By the fourth day, he was doing little 2-3 ft jumps. Of course, the radio helmet and Nate’s calm teaching voice in Chris’ head made a huge difference since Chris could try something new and then immediately hear how to fine-tune his position or kite to do the move better. Wow! We were amazed! So, if you want to learn kiting—and especially if you’re a former windsurfer, sailor, skier, or snowboarder, like our son Chris—and even if you haven’t been to Maui or haven’t had time to practice your favorite wind and water sports for 10+ years…you owe it to yourself to call or text right now and book 3-4 days of kiteboarding lessons with Nate at Maui Kiteboarding Aqua Sports 808-298-4475. He will re-awaken your love of water, waves, speed and put the thrill of controlling a lot of power into your own hands!

I had lessons lined up with someone else for my trip that were cancelled by the instructor last minute, so I was scrambling to find someone. I was EXSTATIC that Karen was able to find me an instructor with only 4 days notice. That is why they are getting two stars and not one, but that is where my happiness ended. On the phone, I told Karen I was mostly independent but needed work staying upwind. She didn't ask me anything else, including my weight. When my instructor met me on the beach he said "so, this is your first lesson?". After explaining my skill level, we started talking gear. I assumed the big van on the beach was FULL of gear, so we just needed to find stuff that fit - nope! The instructor didn't have a harness for me. My lesson was supposed to start at 11:30, but I didn't hit the water until almost 1:00, because my instructor had to go find gear. When I was handed my helmet, I asked where the radio was. The instructor said "oh, you want a radio?". I asked how you would have a lesson without one. He said he would just give me hand signals from the beach. Hmmmm, not sure how a hand signal will help me stay upwind, when I need instruction in real time. He called Karen to see if there was a radio available - there was not. I basically paid $600 to rent gear and have someone launch and land me. There was virtually no instruction (not the instructor's fault, how could he instruct me without a radio??). I have also NEVER heard of a student being responsible for loss of gear? I wanted to kite aggressively during my lesson so I could really push myself and learn, but the fear of losing my board in the swells and wind direction not conducive to the board returning to the beach made me SUPER conservative. I was so worried about losing the board that I just said "f" it and ended up spending half of my time just flying the kite without even taking the board out. I have EXCELLENT kite skills already, I did not need any work on that! I still just can't wrap my head around how they expect to give lessons without a radio!! I tipped my instructor, because none of this was his fault and he was a real sweetheart.

Response from Karen L, Manager at Aqua Sports Maui

Hi, I am so sorry this happened to you. The big van IS full of gear with at least 20 harnesses, I don't know why you couldn't find one to fit. Radios are great when they work , but are constantly breaking down,. All instructors know how to teach lessons without radios. Radios are not available for all lessons but we can make sure you get a radio if you request one. We are all about safety and that's one of the reasons we make students responsible for gear, it avoids a lot of accidents. That being said, we are all about our students being happy, so please accept one of your 2 days of lessons for free. If you email or call me I would be happy to refund you for 1 of your days out of the 2 days of lessons you took.

I've had several lessons with Chuck over the years & can't say enough good things about his professionalism, friendliness, and easy demeanor. Having the headset in the water is a huge added bonus when working through the beginner steps. I'm now (almost) tacking back upwind, thanks to Chuck's amazing tips. Aloha Chuck!

Aloha Karen, Sitting here at the airport heading back to the mainland. This was my second time taking lessons from you and Diana. I could not have enjoyed myself anymore. We had some challenging conditions, but with Diana's patient instructions, I was up and riding smoothly. Diana is a great teacher! I look forward to building on what I have learned now down on the Columbia Gorge. It was also great to meet you this year. Always nice to put a name to a voice on a phone. Mahalo Nui loa and A hui ho. A.j. Paulsen

I called Karen (the boss) after being disappointed with hiring a free lance instructor who sort put me off the sport. She was very friendly, accommodating and explained all the necessary steps to transition from windsurfing (I used to be an windsurf instructor and there are some critical differences that need practice). Karen set me up with Jayeson who is an outstanding instructor. He went step by step and very effectively taught me how to handle the kite and be safe. He was extremely friendly and nice and had a genuine interest in my learning curve. I highly recommend this school and encourage anyone in a similar situation to look for certified and organized instructors. Excellent experience. Thank you Karen, Jayeson and team.
