Aloha Regina, Rick & Alex, we had a great time full of adventure and I saw the happiness in your face and the joy in yours hearts when you guys jumping and swimming in the waterfalls, also in ocean where is located the black sand beach & you was amazed when you guys saw eucalyptus rainbows tree forest, and come to us plenty chickens and you feed them. I feel glad that you got the best experience on the tour, and many memories you guys already done. Also you guys was amazed when saw Hawaiian green see turtles resting Peaceful on the beach a list a group of 30. The tour was very well organized. The pickup was punctual which made us to start our tour quite early as planned. The tour guy is just an amazing person, he really do have a great sense of humour. And he gave us all his attention during the whole time the tour last.

Hana, Waterfalls, Black Beach & Turtles

Company: Maui Fantastic Tours

The tour guide (Oscar aka James Bond) and Owner of the Company was pleasant at the beginning of the trip and gave a history of Hawaii while we drove. He was very difficult to understand with his strong accent. The vehicle appeared to be a private vehicle, not a company vehicle. I could tell because the license plate was not commercial. There's no signage on the vehicle. His driving was not safe. He drove far too fast!

The what to expect guide online is NOT correct! In fact, I pointed this out to him and he told me they hadn't updated the itinerary online.

Here's the Itinerary as I experienced it:

Stop at Rainbow Trees: There is no trail to walk, just a 5 minute stop by the side of the road to take photos (Not the 30 minutes stated in the itinerary).

Waikamoi Stream: (Note: We were given 30 minutes, not 1 hour as stated in the itinerary).

Wai'anapanapa State Park: He pointed us in the direction of the beach and cave and told us he would be back for us in an hour. He said he had to go run an errand for another customer. We did not have the tour. (Note: We were only allowed 1 hour here, not the 3 hours given in the itinerary).

Hana Bay: No choice on food truck. (Note: The itinerary said this would be a 1 hour stop, not 10 minutes taking food "to go" to eat in the vehicle).

Red Sand Beach-Kaihalulu Beach: We never stopped. He said it was closed.

He handed the woman the mixers for margaritas (and a dirty cup). Apparently, this was the complimentary drink.

Ho'okipa Beach Park:. We stopped at the top most lookout about 75-100 yards from the beach. I wanted a picture of the turtles on the beach and asked if he could drive us closer to the parking near there. He said he couldn't because... something about commercial...that I didn't understand. Since we were scheduled to be there for 45 minutes, I told him I was going to walk down to the beach and take some photos. I was informed that I couldn't because we didn't have time. We had been there 5 minutes. He told me I needed to come back on my own.

Hopefully by now he has had a chance to update his online itinerary.

I did take an extra day of my vacation to drive myself to Hana and see what I missed on this trip.

I have done over 50 mini tours (I travel 1 month each year) in the last 5 years (although most have been overseas) and I have never had such a poor experience. It is the first time in my life (I'm 50) that I did not tip a minimum of 25-35 percent to a tour guide. I did not tip at all. We returned to the drop off parking lot at 3:20 pm. He handed us each a calendar of Hawaii as we left. I honestly wanted nothing to remind me of that tour. I didn't let it affect my stay as everyone else I have met in this beautiful place has been friendly and happy. He owns the company so nothing can be done. I'm sure his response to this post will be how great his company is, etc. That seems to be his response to all negative reviews. It's upsetting to me that there are so many good reviews. I researched the reviews for this trip prior to taking it. How is it that my tour didn't match what others who gave 5 stars got? After contacting Viator, I was given a partial refund. I was offered a full refund, but I did acknowledge to them that I was driven to Hana and in all fairness, the guide should be compensated for his time and gas.

I wouldn't have taken the time to write all this if the trip wasn't just aweful. I'm sure they will try to place the blame on me. You can believe what you wish. I have no reason to lie since I could have received a full refund. It wasn't even about the money, I just felt like I had been taken advantage of and I just don't want to see anyone else go through this. The woman with me was going to ask for a refund as well. Just wanted to warn others. It's a lot of money to experience next to nothing. I recommend going yourself or take a reputable company tour. Not just some guy with a car. There were no spots we stopped that you wouldn't have been able to find by just Googling "Road to Hana" online.

I understand that rain makes this trip not as fun and think the tour operator should cancel this for you if it is raining the day of the tour.

The terrible part was lack of consideration by our driver for us. We were dropped at the black sand beach in the pouring rain and left there for over an hour while our driver did some delivery. We were dropped at the lunch spot so we could purchase our food and eat in the rain while he ran another errand. The AC in the van didn't work properly and our driver was wiping the windshield off so he could see driving down the road in the pouring rain! With the heavy rains we had on our tour date, there was standing water on all the low spots that our driver simply didn't slow down for - it was a horrible experience.

I thought it was interesting that I used Viator to book two things to do in Maui. The Hana trip was the first and a Whale Watcher the second. As soon as we were done with the Whale Watcher I received an email to review the tour. I never received one to review the Hana trip so I went directly on Trip Advisor to do this review.

We sorry about your reservation about the weather and heavy rains on your day tour and we feel sorry about that, only that we don’t really control the elements over the weather, if we did, we would no hesitate to regulate everything to ensure that our customers get everything to their exact taste at all day tour, but in contrast Krystal your girlfriend and the others customer as Vanessa, Gabrielle, and the rest enjoy saw Maui’s flaunts is more more beautiful colors amazing rain forest and the power of waterfalls and explore the black sand beach, lava formations and cave in spite of the heavy rain across the travel day also from Rebecca we get a positive review about the tour and at all feel satisfied, Krystal and the other customers saw the good customer service of our tour guide also for drive carefully and keep you guys Safety above others and them reward him with a high tip because Road to Hana is intense and hard drive! Our tour guides guide introduce at our customers at all locations we visited and explain what you can do and the more relevant you don’t miss to explore and give to you freedom to express by yourself without supervision and after that introduction they must back at vehicle take care of the customer belongings inside, make a double check at all on the car are good tire pressure, levels etc for driving back Safety! Everyone understands we no can control the elements of the weather but we welcome every constructive criticism and also helps you to correct some of the misconceptions you might have about us and our tour experience and also we understand everyone has a bad day. oscar started off the morning by yelling at me from a distance & telling me if i wasn't ready by 7:00 am, he was leaving. mind you, my family & i were 20 minutes early & were sitting there waiting for him this whole time. oscar then, rudely kicked off 6 guests who accidently got on the wrong tour bus. he then made fun of them & left, without the actual 6 people who were supposed to be on our tour. i guess they were going to be late, but oscar did not care on waiting for them. he instead also made fun of them too.

first, we stopped at ho’okipa beach park, where i guess we were supposed to see sea turtles. we saw a few, but we were looking over a fence about 400 ft above them to where we couldn't even spot them in pictures. he only gave us 10 minutes at this spot & whenever he wanted us to hurry up, he would angerly honk the horn. we then headed to hana highway, in which he proceeded to talk about himself & not give us much insight into hawaiian culture or what we were seeing. even when he did, he was extremely difficult to understand with his broken english (as you can see by his poor grammar in his responses to other reviews).

not only should he not be a tour guide because he is not good with people, he also seemed to know nothing about hawaii. when we asked him questions, he would genuinely ignore us & turn the music up to act like he didn't hear us or he would say "i don't know the answer to your question." as for the rest of the tour, our experiences were similar the other negative reviews this past month. we got hurried to eat lunch, hurried at the waterfall, & dropped off an hour early at the end of the day. we were threatened at the black sand beach that if we were not on the van at the exact time, he was going to leave us behind.

come to found out actually, oscar is the founder of this company, and is NOT just a tour guide. he obviously is getting away with treating his customers poorly & misrepresenting the quality of the tour. regardless of the price of the tour, it was a horrible experience & we hope you will avoid this experience- as we should have done.

We did not have the experience advertised. We only saw turtles and surfers from a great distance, stopped at one waterfall for few minutes viewing and stopped at black sand beach with no tour guide. Lunch was pick up from food truck and eaten at bay, where we were finally given one cold water. The snack was a bag of chips. No explanation for lack of other stops or why we weren't given all the experiences advertised. The driver seemed to be rushing us the whole day and was impossible to understand. The ride was not even peaceful because the driver talked constantly but not about what we were seeing. A very frustrating and expensive ride to Hana.

Hello terri, Your PESSIMISM, CRITICISM AND NEGATIVE ATTITUDE! was evident during the travel day tour experience your comments; is too far, is too hot, is raining, weather is too cold, am feel so tired, too much drive and your negative attitude made uncunfortabke others customers. Road to Hana and meet spectacular black sand beach is similar go looks for a meet hidden gem, the drive is intense 5 hours back and forward also hard and dangerous, but our customers no worries about because our tour guides have years of experience under they belts. In contrast with you other customers enjoy the path watch spectacular rine forest amazing Clift spectacular waterfalls on the black sand beach they was interactive and was witness to see Maui’s flaunting his more beautiful colors and wild life also they swim in the waterfalls and ocean where is fantastic black sand beach and YOU SHOW YOUR RESERVATIONS TO SWIM BECAUSE THE WEATHER WAS COLD! sorry about, also other customers enjoy jumy, jummy fresh fish food and other diversity of dishes from locals. Our CUSTOMERS LOVE OUR TOUR BECAUSE THEY CAN INTERACT WITH THE NATURE AND CAN EXPRESS BY THEMSELVES WITH OUT SUPERVISION SO FOR THIS COMPANY THEY SATISFACTION IS WHAT ALMOST PRIDE! In MAUI FANTASTIC! This is not a “private” tour like it states. It is a private guy stuffing as many people as he can in his personal mini van. Do not plan on following the itinerary listed. He drops you off at the places, leaves for a little bit and then picks you back up. Don’t plan on visiting all the places listed because he changes things as he goes along. He will give you a giant history lesson but he is very hard to understand. He is a writer, so don’t believe anything you read. There is not one thing on his van stating what company he works for. He did not care about COVID at all. He did not wear a mask or require anyone else to wear one.

Hello Marquel, We saw your review and felt really bad that you had those reservations. However, if you don’t mind, we would like to help clarify a few things about the tour. First I like to remark in the company at all staff members and tour guides daily must pass a digital safety screen before starting to work and our fleet consist on Pacifica or Toyota Vans very confortable, reliable and well desinfected. The tourist visit to us before arrival to Hawaii they must to pass the test and get negative results so we asume everyone of them still in good physical conditions and on travel day our tour guides kindly explain that and is your personal decision were or not mask also as everyone know here on Hawaiian Island we have one of the best weather and safety place at all over the world. For private tour that it does mean we carry maximum 6 passengers in our vehicles plus driver what instead on the platform you booked and we are Outstanding company with at all requirements and permits for State of Hawaii and the vehicles top to 7 pack no need stating announcements or publicity about the company and we understand you don’t nothing about rules and regulations from Hawaiian government on this industry but is very important remark our company is award winning granted “Certificate of Excellent 2019” and “Travelers Choice 2020” for “TripAdvisor”, so is not what you wrote was a private guy stuffing people on his personal car and on your day tour experience only travel four passengers; you , your husband Tyson, and two girls Lucia and Mariana also a point of note on contrast to you we Granted from Lucia a “Positive Review” about the travel experience and tour and made good comments; about amazing locations we visited and saw Maui’s flaunts his most beautiful colors and wild life and also about our tour guide because him provide to Mariana first aids and take care of her because she feel a little bad. I like to remark compare our service with other competitors, we make more long stops and take our customers at more private and hidden gems, on the locations before you go to explore we explain and introduce on the place; what you expect, what you can do and what not and we guide you, because we believed our customers should enjoy the beauty of this elements of nature without disturbed by crowd or stares from strangers and you have the opportunity to feel relax and express by yourself and no need for supervision and the tour guide need to back at vehicle to take care of your belongings you living into in between you enjoy the location. On the waterfalls also Black sand beach we notice you couldn’t take a swim due to your reservations about the water temperature and we feel sorry about that, only that we don’t really control over the elements of the water, if we did, we would no hesitate to regulate everything to ensure that our customers get everything to their exact taste, but in contrast Tyson your husband went to swim and jump into refreshing, crystalline and pristine waters and him enjoy as a child and you take videos of him want to show up at your sons, also the girls feel very happy saw the beautiful rainforest around and ladscape, birds singing and lava cave and rocks formation on the park and our tour guides at all the time follow the itinerary instead and before finished the tour him ask if feel satisfied with the service and the tour, and if anyone have any kind of complaint about it is the moment to express and neither of you guys express something and your husband appreciate good service and attention and reward at our tour guide with good tip! very much problem to find the pick up, and also there were margaritas included in the price and in one beach was offered margarita one glass and i did know that is from tour company i thought that the other tour member is offering that, the communication of this tour was not good, i did not feel good on this tour

Hello there! As part of our tour, we always offer margaritas to our clients, as long as this was stated in the price. This is why margarita you got offered. We apologize for the break in communication as our policy is always to ensure there is free flow of communication between our tour guides and our clients. We cherish the utmost satisfaction of clients and would always make sure we go to great lengths to guarantee that. To ensure that all our clients get to designated pick up location, we always send multiple message describing the location and send more just days( and hours) to the tour date. Contained within our correspondence is usually as direcection and guide, but we always add we are open for even further enquirers and questions in the event that a client did not comprehend the direction given. This is because we don’t want our clients to experience any difficulties in locating the pick up point. I believe your difficulty in finding the pick up point must have arisen from and error in understanding some aspects of the directions given, and we totally understand that this could happen some times. There were several things that went wrong with this tour. I will do my best to keep things concise and hopefully it will be helpful for you considering tours to the Road to Hana.

1) We were instructed to meet at Walmart. When we arrived at 7:15 we did not see where to meet. No groups or tour guide was standing around or meeting anywhere. I finally stood right at the very front by myself (at 7:30 am) hoping someone would come. Finally Oscar the tour guide came very hurriedly and blew his harmonica at me. No communications were said about following him or what we were supposed to do. I went back to the car and was trying to get his attention so that he would speak with me as to what the instructions were and he was on the phone. I finally interrupted him to ask him if we should go ahead and get in his car and where we should park and he very rudely says "come on come on! and Park anywhere". I told him he was being very rude and He explains to us everyone else canceled but us so i guess that's why he was rude?

2) Oscar talks "at you" not "to you". Not once did he ask us any questions about ourselves or where we were from. He did not even introduce himself. He just kept going on and on and on without any input or acknowledgment from us about the history of Hawaii.... and in a Very thick accent. He is VERY hard to understand. So imagine 6 hours of someone talking at you in a very thick accent so you only understand partially what he is saying.. absolute torture.

3) Breakfast was supposed to be included but it was not provided. When I asked him if it was included he responded with "oh i need to update the website and we sent you a text the day before about what to expect". What? I told him that you cant just take away a portion of the tour after it is already booked. He did not confirm that he understood me, only repeating that he sent a text the day before (see screenshot of cryptic text).

4) Oscar kept calling me "honey". This seemed very degrading to me.

5) Towards the end of the tour he was explaining about the history and the people that came here to work and he said "Do you see any African Americans here? Thats because they don't like to work". I responded with "What!? are you kidding me?" I couldn't believe my ears that he was making such a blatantly racist comment.

6) The tour itself was not that great. Surely, by this point the sites we will go to will make up for this horrendous tour guide... but, sadly no. The waterfall is dinky and the water was freezing. He kept saying our tours are better because we take you to secret places that the other tours don't. well maybe the other tour groups don't go there because they are lame?! We went to a beach and had our lunch, it wasn't that great and nothing interesting there. We were only there for a short time and were ready to go. He had on his swim trunks ready to take a swim!! I thought this was really bizarre that our tour guide would go for a swim while they are giving us our tour?? What if we were ready to go and we couldn't find him because he was out swimming?

7) The good: Turtle Beach and the Black Sand beach were great! Loved to see the giant turtles and watched the surfers. The black sand beach is not to be missed! there are lava caves and exploding fountains in the black sand beach.
8) When he knew we were unhappy, Oscar offered us 50% off and told us to email the manager. ok, fine. But what i realized was that he is the owner of the tour! so there really was no opportunity to be heard or for him to take some constructive criticism (due to the language barrier and the fact that he is the owner) which is why I am writing this review so hopefully he can improve himself and his tour.

9) I didn't get the full 50% because I was told that trip advisor takes a cut.

Do yourself a favor. a) skip the road to Hana and go to the NaPali Coast in Kauai .. this is 1000% better. or b) drive yourself and research the sites and read the reviews ahead of time so that you go to the good sites on the road to hana or C) hire a private guide and have them drive you to what you want to see (I am assuming there more than what I listed in my review.. we just didn't get to see them).

For breakfast , as part of the tour offer a variety of snacks and drinks at all our customers, but I guess that might not count as a full meal to everyone. This is however why we email our customers a notice informing them on what to expect and what no to . It is unfortunate that there was a misunderstanding with to text sent . Serving full breakfast meals would warrant having to charge our customers more. But we however provide them light meals in the form of the snacks and drinks that we serve them in the morning . Our tour guides try to be as friendly as possible to ALL our customers, irrespective or their gender , this is why there might be an occasional use of endearments. It is however entirely unintentional if some of this endearments come out as degrading to certain of our customers. This is absolutely unintentional as we have no reason to want to make our customers feel degraded . The waterfalls that we take our customers to are more private than others because we believe our customers should enjoy the beauty of these elements of nature without having to be disturbed by a crowd. Most person do not enjoy having to experience these things amidst lost of noice and stares from strangers. Sure, a group might be ok, but no a large number of people. This is why we hand pick these falls to ensure our customers get the very best out of the tour. They can be free to express themselves and have as much fun as they please without having to be conscious of the person who are there. This is what we desire for them and is what makes our tour standout . We are sorry that you didn’t get your full 50% refund, despite our generosity to get you a refund over your displeasure. This is simple as a result of deduction by TripAdvisor. We cherish our customers and is why we would offer a percentage refund over any dissatisfaction expressed by any of our customers. We try to maintain goodwill between us and our customers keep coming back . We noticed you couldn’t take a swim due to your reservations about the water temperature and we feel sorry about that, only that we don’t really control over the elements of the weather. If we did, we would not hesitate to regulate everything to ensure all our customers get everything to their exact taste . However, despite those things being out of our control , we make extra effort to ensure that our customers stil thoroughly enjoy themselves during the tour by doing everything possible within our power to give nothing but the best . We must state that this review has been hurtful to us , but we welcome every constructive criticism at it would definitely help us in theathing our future customers even much better. We do hope you would take into cognizance our desire to first offer the refund without you having to demand it as a sign our goodwill and good faith between us and every of our customers.
