We had a nice tour with Chris doing the West Maui loop. We got picked up at 7am. Chris said that it was up to us as to our comfort level with masks inside the van but outside when we could maintain distance, masks were not required. We asked to keep the masks on inside the vehicle.

We started the day doing the hike, which for us was at Waihe'e trail. We were not aware of the trail name in advance, but if you do this tour, check out the reviews on this trail. I recommend hiking boots (or barefoot, if you're used to that). This is *not* a trail for casual shoes or flip flops. You need something with grip. The trail is beautiful and I highly recommend it. I would say it's a moderately difficult trail due to the gradual incline (860 feet to 2500 feet within about 2 miles) and the muddy/rocky conditions of part of the trail as you reach the top. Even if it's dry, it could be wet on the trail. For this reason, coming down is harder than going up. People leave walking sticks by the gate. Not a bad idea to grab one and then leave on your way out.

The views are absolutely spectacular. Chris was great in taking several pictures of us and then sharing them at the end of the tour. He also provided fresh coconut water (cutting the coconut there). The tour group also supplies a cooler. I recommend bringing something to eat and a change of clothes, as you'll be hungry and sweaty afterwards. There's only a port-a-John in the parking lot, so you'd need to change in the van or when you get into town for a more comfortable bathroom. After the hike, Chris took us around west Maui, stopping for banana bread and other goodies. I don't remember the woman's name who was selling bread but she had several cute baby goats.

Chris also took us to out of the way areas including a park where the trees looked like they were out of Avatar. We ended the day in Lahaina. This was a great area, and had we had more energy, would've explored more. Overall this was a good tour. My only recommendation would've been an earlier start. The Waihe'e trail is also well marked and easy to do without a guide, should that be a big draw for you. The trail is open to the public, with no fee. I would still recommend doing any hike with a partner, in case of injury.

Mahalo for the comprehensive review! We really appreciate the feedback. Our guests tell us that reading these reviews plays a big role on why they book with us. We always are flexible with start times and I will chat with my booking agents to make sure the are throughly explaining the benefits of a earlier start time. Thank you for the suggestion! Aloha, Matt Kerstein

I had booked a private tour with Matt because my husband is a photographer and we wanted to ensure he got to see and photograph the many beautiful stops along the way. By booking a private tour, it gave us both the chance to relax on a windy and wet road as well as learn more about the island from a resident. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and very accommodating on stops and rest breaks. We visited during one of the wettest weeks possible in Maui and it was still incredibly enjoyable due to our seasoned and calm guide.

The half day Hana tour was personally my favorite part of our family vacation. My only regret was we did not do a full day tour.

Chris was our private tour guide. I'm not gonna lie. He took a lot of pressure off myself while handling the driving, the navigating, and even the picture taking. There were seven of us total, 6 females (4 women, 2 girls) and myself (adult male). So, having him around allowed me to "enjoy the ride" even though I was still a little stressed knowing that this was only a half day tour and still wanted to cover enough places.

He took us to several spots along the way:
1. A perfect spot to view rainbow eucalyptus trees and a bamboo forest containing a small waterfall
2. Keanae Peninsula and banana bread stop-over
3. Upper Waikana Falls (aka Three Bears) - the highlight of the tour in my opinion
4. Wai'anapanapa Black Sand Beach

Christopher was very patient and cordial to our group. Putting safety first, he even advised not attempting to swim when we got close to the Three Bears water falls. I trusted and supported his recommendations throughout the tour.

All in all, it was a fun-filled, adventurous day. Hopefully, we'll be back again some day. I highly recommend Chris and his Hana tour company!

My husband and did a full day (8 hour) private tour to Hana with our tour guide and travel companion Matt. We had been debating a group tour and we are so glad we went the extra mile and booked a private trip. We both have some physical limitations and Matt adapted the day completely to our abilities, wants, needs and interests. We had a great balance of active sightseeing, rest time in beautiful places, stops to see the sights, delicious snacks and a meal along the way at a lovely local restaurant, and stunning vistas all the way around the island. Matt has seemingly limitless local knowledge of georgraphy, history, politics, culture and was able to answer all our questions. We would do this again and recommend 100%.

I'm so glad we decided NOT to drive this on our own!!! Matt was so knowledgeable and kind. We did private tour and all my kids wanted to do was jump off a waterfall/cliff! He was so patient with our boys. He took us to the waterfall first and just knew the timing of everything. As soon as we were leaving big crowds would show up. It was so nice not to have to wait in line for the banana bread and having the falls nearly to ourselves! He picked us up at 8AM and we did the 5 hour tour. His suggestions and where he took us were all spot on. He'll tailor your trip for what you want to see and/or do. We did the 5 hour trip because we didn't want to give up a whole day, but it went by so fast and we enjoyed it so much I highly recommend doing the 10 hour one. It is a real amazing experience! We really appreciated all of Matt's knowledge that he shared. We wouldn't have seen or known half the stuff if we did it on our own. This tour is a MUST if your in Maui!!!

My husband and I did a private Half Way to Hana tour. Susan was great at explaining our options & booking the best tour for us; she even returned my phone call after office hours. We are 65 years old & my husband is having hip replacement surgery soon & I was recovering from a torn plantar facia, so we were not able to sit in a vehicle for 10 hours like you would on the full day Road to Hana tour or walk for long amounts of time or far - that's why this tour was perfect for us. It was a 5 hour tour with several stops where we got out of the van and could stretch our legs, try island foods and drinks like fresh mango & pineapple juice and banana bread which were so delicious and take pictures. Matt was our guide/driver & was very knowledgeable about the island and things to do & see. He was very kind to put up with us asking many questions about the island, the people and the lifestyle there. The van we were in was spotless/clean and they provided us with towels, hiking sticks, a cooler with ice for us to use if we wanted and water. We saw waterfalls, black sand beach, a park where the ocean beautifully splashed up on the large black lava rocks, surfers & many other beautiful things. We went to Garden of Eden Arboretum, which cost $22 each more than our tour, but it was worth it to see spectacular views and plants/flowers of the island. This company is very professional, friendly and helpful and work hard to make sure you enjoy your tour. I'd highly recommend them.

This private tour was the highlight of our 2 week long vacation to Maui. The road to Hana was great! Our guide, Matt, listened to our preferences and really personalized our experience. Having him with our family gave us tremendous confidence and we all learned so much about the island's Hawaiian history and culture. We got to do all kinds of great activities like hiking, swimming in remote places, cliff jumping, climbing, etc...Our boys ages 16 and 18 loved it!

Awapuhi Adventures is a tour company and your personal Hawaii concierge. The husband and wife team that run this company are so nice and enourmously helpful. Matt is the lead tour guide, who took us on a personalized road to Hana. My grand daughters claim that is was the best part of our very fun week long trip. He found beautiful beaches, cliff jumping spots for my very crazy grand daughters and other beautiful highlights. This 12 hour day was way more than you would get on a group bus tour and while not inexpensive the personal attention was priceless. I should also note that Matt is an expert swimmer and, I think, lifeguard certified that made me more comfortatble with my grand daughter adventurous nature. In addition he and his wife offered countless referrals to vendors (massage therapist) luaus and sunset cruises. I would not hesitate to use them.

We booked a private Road to Hana tour with Awapuhi Adventures after reading their great reviews on Trip Advisor and it was amazing. Chris was our guide and we liked him so much we booked another private tour to Haleakala Crater later in the week. The day we went to Hana it was rainy so we weren't able to swim in the waterfalls for safety reasons, but Chris made sure we had an amazing time. He knew so much about the history, plants, and culture as well as some great secluded places to stop. Chris kept us safe and entertained- it felt like we were with a friend. Awapuhi Adventures had great communication from the time we booked until after the tour. They responded to emails very quickly. I really can't say enough about how great our experiences were with Awapuhi Adventures and Chris- just book the tour and see for yourself, I promise you won't regret it.

Aloha Elizabeth, We are a small company at Awapuhi Adventures and we feel that it really behooves our guests. We can put a lot of attention to detail that simply gets lost vs. large volume operations. Thank you so much for recognizing and mentioning details of your experience. Kind Regards, Matt

This tour was the highlight of our trip to Maui. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and experienced with the sites and history of the places we visited. He was thoughtful enough to tailor the attractions and conversation to our areas of interest. This level of personalization seemed so much better than what I would expect from a larger tour group. I highly recommend the Awapuhi Adventures tour to anyone visiting Maui.
