No idea why this is a “must” in so many guides
Jul 2021 • Couples
This place is a dump. I would love to support a local, quirky and historic general store, but it’s just a whole bunch of junk that’s poorly organized and shockingly priced. Stop here only if you are desperate for something.

It’s FILTHY. Mega disappointing.

Well worth a stop!
May 2021
Before you visit, I suggest you look up "Hasegawa General Store" on YouTube to get into the right mindset for a visit. It's an old song (I first heard it in the 60's!), and you'll get a good idea of why the store is worth a visit.

It's a different world from most of what you'll see in Hawaii. Grab a refreshing drink, maybe a snack, and soak in the atmosphere.

2 enthusiastic thumbs up!

Far From Waikiki !
May 2021
Anything and everything you may need- from Groceries to hardware! Nice store to stop and browse around in. Even bought some souvenirs with their perfect motto “Far from Waikiki”. Nice kittle country style store with friendly staff.

Good store to stock up before driving back!

This is a good store to re-supply for the return drive. It’s older and a typical small town store...nothing fancy. I bought a Monster to help keep me alert.

Was so surprised by this store

What a sweet lady we visited within here and the store had such an eclectic offering. I am sure being in this more remote area they need to have a bit of everything in case of a road issue. So glad we made time to stop in. Great store for Hana.

Run down and costly
Feb 2020 • Family
Only go there if you are desperate. Don’t understand why the store is a must-see. It is run-down, old, badly kept, dirty, filthy and super expensive. I understand groceries are expensive in Hawaii but this place takes the cake. There are no price markers and they just charge you whatever they want. Parking is ridiculous. It looks like a store in a village in a third world country, not a tourist attraction in Hawaii, USA

A BUCKET LIST DISAPPOINTMENT
Oct 2019
Of course, we've heard of Hasegawa's General Store for years. We used to live on Oahu and visited Maui multiiple times during that period. However, we never made the "Road to Hana" experience...until October 2019. So, keep in mind that we know Hawaii past and present from living there for eleven years.

Some reviewers are disappointed in their experience. Maybe it's because of the "hype". Others thought it was nostalgic and reminiscent of years past. Our perception was that it just doesn't represent past or present Hawaii very well. For example, Hawaii is known for their "aloha spirit" and we know what that looks like and how it feels. Included in that is the way people interact and share, along with knowledge of its own culture. We didn't feel that was represented by at least one of the staff during our stop. There's no excuse for being abrupt, rude, or ignorant of things. One example: a cashier/greeter did not know what a nene bird is.

Second, both the exterior and interior looked uncared for. Again, it didn't seem to really reflect any specific Hawaiian culture past or present. It just seemed run down and neglected. Inside, the assortment of souveneir items and other things didn't really seem original or representative of any type of general store. Of course, items were expensive, but the quality didn't seem to hold up. We did buy a few items anyway.

Do yourself a favor, and pass on Hasegawa's and spend more time at truly worthwhile natural landmarks and scenery along the Hana Highway.

A pocket of Heaven
Aug 2019 • Family
Some people ask what the hype is. It is the hype of the long-lost, old-time general store, rarely seen in the wild. Bonus points for the white unicorn that showed up on the plot of land adjacent to Hasegawa’s General Store.

Disappointing
Oct 2019
Not as colorful or nostalgic as the song would lead you to believer. Hot inside, poorly lit, in a rundown building. Odd assortment of "stuff" but probably have anything you may have forgotten on the road to Hana.

Rude Older Cashier
Aug 2019 • Solo
Went in to check it out. 1st time visitor. I found some quilt squares and tried to request if it was okay to leave on the counter. I was initially ignored, and when I finally got a response, the old male cashier rudely retorted "Well how long will you be looking around?" like it was Sams Club or Costco! I checked out with a young native cashier instead.
